World Cup Nonsense

Im gonna go watch the World Cup there this weekend and I'm gonna bring my service dog and ride around on one of those scooter things, and I'm gonna jump all over Walt Disney's statue and what else? Oh yeah, I'm gonna chant and wave Brazilian flags and I'm gonna wear a tee shirt from Gay Days and I'm gonna pool hop to every pool in every resort, and then I'm gonna go to World Showcase and get sloppy drunk and fall
asleep in a topiary. Did I forget anything?
;)

Also keep in mind, not everyone is tech savvy so you can't assume every single person on the planet will have a DVR at home or the latest smartphone to watch live streaming TV on their phones and people won't certainly bring a radio on vacation. So a TV may be their only resort to watch a big game. Could they watch it in their hotel room? Of course, but you have to supply your food and drink if you need it and depending on the hotel, they may not even have the channel that airs a game on the in-room TV. And considering that not everyone comes to Disney with a rental car, having to rely public transportation to head to a bar can be very time consuming. As pointed out, Disney saw an opportunity to make some money while also appealing to the World Cup fans.

Sports are meant to be seen live. Watching it tape delayed having already knowing the results lessens the experience tremendously. Sports are different compared to regular scripted dramas and sitcoms or "reality TV". What I mean is, if you miss an episode of the latest TV show, no big deal. You can go online to sites like Hulu, download it digitally, use your DVR and/or "binge watch" where you can literally watch a whole season of a TV show in just one weekend! With sports, you don't have that luxury. Very rarely will sporting events be re-played on television, especially true for international events like the World Cup or Olympics and you won't find sporting games archived on Hulu or Netflix.

Bottom line is, I know watching TV sounds absolutely contrarian to what a vacation should be, but the bottom line is, from all the hustle and bustle of all of the vacation activities, people have different ways of relaxing because if they devote 100% exclusively of the time to the sightseeing and tourist attractions, they'd be worn out! Some people like to chill at the hotel pool. Others get a massage or go to a spa. Some even work out at the hotel fitness center. And for others, they like to watch TV for a bit.

I certainly hope you at least are planning to run over a foot or two with that scooter thingy! ;)

Let me clarify my opening post:

I have two big pet peeves when it comes to restaurants.
1. Televisions. I absolutely cannot stand to go out to eat only to see a giant bank of television screens splashed across a wall. If I wanted to watch television, I would have stayed home. Going to a restaurant is about experiencing the restaurant with your friends and family.
One of the nicer places around here is a rather-elegant sushi restaurant called Geisha. It's really quite classy, and the service is always top notch.
But right above the sushi bar are four television sets. And they are all tuned in to a variation of ESPN. And while one can ignore the sports, you cannot ignore the hideous ambient light they give off. If you want to sit at the sushi bar and watch the chefs work their magic, you practically have to wear sunglasses to tone down the LCD screen glow.

2. Themed Restaurants That Shrug Off The Theme.
If you'll notice, my gripe is only directed toward Restaurantosaurus. The same announcement also stated that they are going to be putting up World Cup viewing this week in the WoL "Festival" Pavilion....and I honestly don't think that's a bad idea. Heck, open up the Millennium Building and Odyssey...Epcot is to be a permanent world's fair, so it makes sense for world celebrations to be centered there.
Quite frankly, it does not make sense for them to put World Cup Soccer anywhere at Animal Kingdom.

This move at Restaurantosaurus is breaking both of these two rules. Thankfully, it's temporary.

I played soccer as a kid and loved playing it and love watching it, but my kids really have/had no interest in it. As far as the WC goes, I love watching it and I think WDW, as a place that has such a mix of visiting nationalities and cultures, is a great place to view the event if one is interested. If I were there at this time, I probably would watch a game if USA was playing a big game like earlier this week. I do watch other countries play, but not sure I would change my vacation plans to watch a game at WDW. I fully understand that others would and I can not see why some folks have a problem with that.

EDIT (to add following after reading Fettfan post above): I will agree that the viewing location seems a liitle odd(if looking from a themed perspective) to me, but someone posted that Restaurantsaurus is frequented by the ever popular Brazilian tour groups. So WDW is doing what any other smart company would do... provide a viewing location for those groups as well as any others who might want to watch and keeping a very large demo and $ figure happy.

Haven't seen that WDW soccer video before... I thought that was a great ad.

As a side note: I have always had an issue with shootouts. That is true for WC as well... just play until one side scores, no matter the how long it takes.

I don't think people know how much people from these countries care about WC. They don't have all the sports we have around here yea they have a few but don't care as much because the best players play over here. But the WC gives these countries something to root for watch the games see how much these ppl care about it. I don't really like the idea of the TVs in the park and I love World Cup but I also know my team won't win but I see how much other people from other countries care about it.

I would say that if one wants to watch soccerball instead of a themed environment, then don't visit a Disney park during a match.

There are four billion tv screens, but only one WDW.

Pretty sure most people have their trips booked well before they know when their home team will be playing. And some people only have certain weeks they can take off a year. We had our vacation booked 2 years ago before we knew if the Bruins would make the Stanley Cup playoffs. They did make it and we had to miss some games and for diehard hockey fans, that was brutal. Do I expect WDW to install tvs in restaurants in the parks so I can watch the games? No, they have bars on property for that. But World Cup soccer is A LOT bigger than NHL hockey, which is only in the US/Canada.

If people are crying about a few tvs on property in restaurants for a special sporting event, then maybe these people shouldn't be vacationing at WDW. Sorry that WDW wants to cater to EVERYONE and not just people on sites like these who feel everything in the parks should be Disney ONLY.

Hockey is in a lot of countries the KHL is a step below but a good league also there is a good Swedish elite league to of course it is not nhl but still good players and if there is another sport that is big around the world is hockey.

Yes the KHL is pretty big overseas. I know lots of the NHL players went to play over in Europe when the NHL was in lockout. Hockey is obviously huge in Canada and here in the US too.

I wouldn't say huge in the us but getting popular each year with cities like Columbus and Nashville seeing attendance grow the past couple of years. I think a team in the northwest will help. I am a huge hockey and always have been but I had the pleasure to watch Mario Lemieux for

To the OP, while I respect and recognize your viewpoints, I would like to provide two counter-arguments.

With regards to why the Animal Kingdom and Restaurantorausus in particular, I assume Disney realized that Epcot may become too overcrowded and that given it's the busy season with the parks being crowded, the Wonders of Life and Odyssey viewings may not have been enough. They couldn't do it in the Magic Kingdom because of the new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and many first-time visitors seeing a completed New Fantasyland and attendance wise, that park has more visitors there than the other three parks. Hollywood Studios was not an option either because given the massive popularity of Frozen, their new Frozen In Summer events most certainly would attract large crowds there. So the only option left was Animal Kingdom, even though as you pointed out, doesn't fit in theme-wise. And why Restaurantorausus, well, if the research shows that it's a popular eatery for the large tour groups, then they are appealing to masses and spreading out the park visitors, as well. Handling four smaller scale crowds is more manageable than one extremely large crowd to put in simple terms. Could they held it in Downtown Disney? Of course, but again, travelling to there takes a very long time and there's no transportation to Downtown Disney directly from a theme park either. So you could very well lose 1-2 hours of your day making a transfer from the parks to a hotel and then to Downtown Disney, which may seem minuscule on paper but can be very large and greatly affect plans, especially if that person is a "one and done" visitor. It's also an effective way to make more money from a business side. Charge people more money to watch games in the parks via park admission whereas they would spend a fraction of that going to a bar outside the parks, either on or off property. It's actually pretty smart

Now as for TVs in restaurants, well, as you pointed out, dining should be about spending time and family, though I would argue that in addition to that, it should be about feeling justified and satisfied for spending money for eating good quality food. With regards to TVs in restaurants, well, that's solely up to the restaurant and you as a paying customer have the right to either request to be seated away or self-seat away from the TVs and restaurants are supposedly laid out purposely that way to provide people who want a more intimate experience. Otherwise, order your food and request it to-go or even walk away. I mean, no one is forcing you to watch the restaurant TV. Some feel that providing a TV entices people to eat or drink more, which means bigger profits for restaurants. It's also some form of entertainment in a way and makes your wait for food a little easier. The economy is still struggling overall and many are cutting back on their TV plans and getting their TV online via Hulu and Netflix and as I said earlier, sporting events are not archived on those mainstream sites like Hulu or Netfliix or re-played very often. For sports fans, yes, there are apps to watch live streaming events, but depending on your resolution, data plans and bandwidth, you could end up getting a bad quality streaming feed. So for some, a TV in a restaurant to watch a big game may be their only source to watch the game. Unless it's an actual sport bar, I do think most restaurants try and do a fairly decent job of not making TV a distraction because the volume is kept low or medium at most and hold a middle ground of providing a TV in the restaurant for people that need it while at the same time, not distract people who truly value a great dining experience. But alas, all views of this topic are subjective.
