Trip Report World’s best uncle - a different kind of Loco trip.

Season 1 Nbc GIF by The Office

This trip was quite the change of pace for us!

Here’s our main cast. Loco, A, and our niece C.

C is 10 years old. For a little back ground, when C was a baby up until she was almost eight she lived across the street from us. Needless to say we were quite close getting to see her every day. Unfortunately after her parents split up, they sold the house and she lives about 30 minutes from us now. Not far, but we don’t get to see her nearly as often as we once did. We were all three excited to get to spend so much time together again on this trip. I was interested to see how she would handle Disney. She’s at that time where she’s kind of in between being a kid and a big kid. Anyways many of you read the pre trip and updates, so let’s get down to business!

Day 1
Our last several trips we’ve taken a road trip and driven the entire way through the night. While this can be exhausting, it makes for a much faster and easier drive than trying to do it during the day. We would use this same tactic for this trip, hoping that C would be able to sleep for much of the trip. I stayed up super late and was able to sleep until nearly noon on the day of our departure in preparation for my long drive.

We picked up C around 5:30 that evening and were on our way!

We made a stop about an hour in for some Chick-fil-A and potty break at target(the CFA was so full it was easier to go into the target next door).

Soon we settled in on our journey across the gulf states. Fortunately C and A both fell asleep around 10 PM and I was able to push through most of Mississippi without stopping. We reached our halfway point at around 2 AM! It was a much needed break to stretch my legs for a bit.

The drive across the Florida panhandle is easily the worst/most boring part of the trip for me. Thankfully A was awake from her nap and kept me company during that long stretch of desolate highway. Shortly after sunup we made it to our next longer break in Live Oak, FL at the Busy Bee, a store similar to a buc-cees without as much fanfare(and higher prices). C had done a great job of sleeping through most of the night, only waking up for the occasional bathroom break.

After our morning stop we were almost there. C’s excitement only grew as we approached the welcome sign!

A wanted to take a look at the character warehouse store, so we headed over to the outlets first. I’d never visited the outlet mall, and having visited them once, I think I’m good for another 20 years or so!

C found some ears she liked for only $7 though, so that was at least something.

Some food court pizza for C’s lunch. I had a chicken sandwich from somewhere that I don’t remember.

We stopped by OKW on our way to the boardwalk to pick up our magic bands. We’d added a night at boardwalk last minute, so the bands were already at OKW. We were able to pick them up without any issues.

We finally decided to head to boardwalk and maybe grab some pool time.

Our room ready text arrived right as we drove by this sign!

Sorry you cannot go in December but 🤞you get there in June next year.
Here’s hoping. If we do go it’ll be a quick one or two days while we’re doing other things in the area.

That is a major bummer but how sweet of A to do the right thing and care so much!! Fist bumps to both of you!!
While it is sweet of A to be so kind to her coworkers, it’s a bit frustrating that our district can’t seem to find subs anymore. I can’t imagine why that is. Just kidding it’s money, or lack thereof for substitute teachers.

Oh that's a bummer, I think you would have enjoyed all the holiday fun at Disneyland. We might be going to DLR in June but it would be late June or we might go during Spring Break. I am most indecisive lately.
We were really looking forward to the holiday activities at DL! I was also excited to get some PB squares! We’re planning on visiting Hollywood and catching a dodgers game before taking a cruise to Cabo. We may just add a few days to that trip for DLR.

Any chance you might do a quick trip to WDW in December? We'll be there from 12/3-12/8!

Sadly no. No plans for WDW on the books at all. Probably won’t be visiting WDW until December of 2024 at the earliest as crazy as that seems. It’s time for a break.

If you want PB squares, maybe it is for the best you aren't going for the holidays. Last year, they took them out of the candy shops because of the all the holiday goodies (none with peanut butter) but they were back when I went in April.

And it is nice that A doesn't want to put a load on her co-workers with the lack of subs (I didn't know she was a teacher, what does she teach). In our district our admins have had to step in and sub sometimes, one time a school board member came in and subbed for a few days. It was an inconvenience to them and it actually caused them to realize the lack of subs and increased sub pay. Maybe her admins need a little inconveniencing too. ;) :)

Well maybe it’s best to just go in June for Pb squares!

A teaches middle school special ed. To say she has the patience of a saint is an understatement! I agree if a board member or admin subbed for one day there would be a pay increase for subs! 😂

Not to hijak the post here, but just wanted to say this problem must be all over. I am from NE PA. I'm a retired elementary teacher subbing a few days a week in the district I retired from. Our district has special permission to use retired teachers on the sub list because of the shortage. :(

Retired teachers can sub here but only for five days a month, after that it starts messing with their retirement. There’s a few in our district that sub, but those five days get taken up pretty quick!

We've had many retired teachers come back and sub. Ours can't work a full week, so only 4 days a week, otherwise it messes with their retirement packages. One year we couldn't find a 1st grade teacher or a Spanish teacher so the district rehired the ones that had just retired but as subs. So they had a 4 day work week, sub pay, and their retirement pay. Not too shabby for them.

Our income tax system in Canada is setup in brackets - so that the first portion of your annual salary is taxed at a more reasonable rate but as you climb up the percentage gets higher so that last 20-30k could be taxed up inthe 30-35% range

So in this scenario the retirement money would be taxed ok but the extra sub money would be taxed higher

So it makes you consider is it worthwhile to keep working 4 days a week

Is it similar in Wisconsin?

I don't think it is taxed any higher. Hopefully I'll find out though in about 10 years.
