working out for Disney

My tummy has officially informed me that I need to get my eating back in check. It hasn't been full day eating extravaganzas and I'm back on track with workouts/walking, but once I open the flood gate on the day... it's game over. I've at least frozen the leftover latkes and finished up the rugelach. I swear, there is just something so addictive about that filling. It's like pecan pie filling with the addition of golden raisins...which is why it's been so brutal on my tummy. We start Christmas cookies tonight (K is currently driving home) and while the sugar alone can trigger a binge, none of the ingredients will hurt my tummy quite like raisons, nuts, and matzo meal. We also have our Christmas Eve and Christmas menu set. We're smoking a turkey on Christmas, so that should be pretty gentle on my system and kind to my nutritional matters. We bought a bunch of stuff at Trader Joe's as well but I targeted enough things that will work for me. In fact, the only real trigger risk is me making mac & cheese for the girls.

I think I'm going to avoid the scale until after New Year's since so many potentially inflammatory foods are in the mix but I have some non-scale measures in play. Those new skinny jeans I got a few weeks ago are already more of a relaxed fit than I wanted. So, I ordered two new pairs that are the next two sizes smaller. The smaller of which arrived yesterday. They fit exactly as I wanted until I get to the waist...which is still very snug. The in-between pair arrives tomorrow. At least I know they'll go on but it's motivation to stay on track. I also got a new winter coat which should arrive soon. My old one is about 10 years old and is a men's XL snowboarding coat...meaning it's already a relaxed fit for a larger masculine frame and now swims on me (with huge gaps for cold air to seep in). The new one is a women's medium (different style) and should give me a bit of a waistline. Not that it gets frigid here but school softball season is coming up and it gets pretty chilly sitting in the bleachers for hours. I also might be able to walk in it without having to layer.

If I don't check back in, wishing you all a very Merry Christmas is you celebrate :)

Smoked turkey sounds good for Christmas. We are doing our normal ham meal for Christmas Eve, but when we go to my sister's house on Christmas Day it will be appetizers. I'm doing a whipped feta dip and roasted tomatoes with pita chips. I thought that might be slightly healthier than the sausage cheese balls I was thinking of.

Hope you all have a nice holidays too!

Thank you!

My reaction was also for the pic of Callie. I hope the meds help and you get back to yourself soon. The odor aspect is also interesting. I've had my share of sinus related issues over the years and that's certainly a new one. Feel better and happy holiday baking!

My doctor told me it happens when there is a bacteria overload. I have had congestion in my sinuses from being sick since Thanksgiving, so it's had plenty of time to develop into an infection.

I am not weighing myself either. For me, it stresses me out because I know it's going to go up because I'm eating more treats and drinking wine. So, I just get back on the horse after the holidays. I do stay active, though and I think that helps a little.

I am making a whipped feta dip, too. This dip has crispy, spiced chickpeas on top.

Merry Christmas Eve 🎄

I'm halfway through my baking so far. I am going to step outside for a walk shortly. We decided to get our Christmas dinner catered this year. My husband and I usually cook on Christmas Day, but he's worn out from his 4 hour work commute and I am still shaking off this sinus infection. We just decided to order a meal from a local restaurant. I did make a cheesecake for tomorrow and I am putting things together for tonight. I'm just heating up a bunch of apps from Trader Joe's for tonight.

I have started my second antibiotic last night, so hopefully the ickiness in my sinus and its gross post nasal drip are gone soon. I'm not super sick, but I am not 100%, either.

I bought the cat a Christmas present. It's this ball that chirps and moves around randomly. You put inside of this round pouch that makes a crinkly noise. The cat is supposed to pounce on it. She was interested, but wary. I'll bring it out tomorrow. She stays indoors when it's cold and I can tell she gets bored. She walks around the house aimlessly and I wanted something to entertain her.

Merry Christmas!! We did most of our celebrating yesterday. When I was growing up, we always celebrated Christmas Eve because my mother said that the birth of Christ was in the Evening, so we did our dinner, went to church, and santa came while we were at church. So when we got home from the candlelight service, we opened presents.

When I moved here, Christmas wasn't a big thing in the Netherlands. It was strictly a religious holiday. Nobody decorated their houses, people didn't exchange gifts really. That was done on Sinterklaas, earlier in the month and was completely separate from Christmas. We always celebrated Christmas because we had A's birthday 2 days before Sinterklaas, my birthday 4 days AFTER Sinterklaas, and my nephew's birthday a week after mine....it was just too much in a short period, so we celebrated Christmas all together instead of Sinterklaas. And we always had to wait to see what BIL's plans were, because they also had his in-laws to celebrate with, where I didn't have family here, so I only had to celebrate with my in-laws...we didn't have to take turns. So we never really developed a tradition of when to open presents and such. It was just whenever it worked out that we could all be there. Now that my in-laws are in a home, we can't really celebrate all together. They don't have a kitchen, so we can't prepare a meal there, and there's not room for all of us.

My MIL had this pair of earrings that she always wore, and one of the pearls came off, so she wanted new ones. We took her out yesterday to go shopping for new ones. She's been very unhappy with her lack of independence since her stroke and moving into the home. She was always the one who called all the shots, and now she can't even remember what day it is much less organize a holiday family get-together. She hasn't been able to leave the home for anything other than doctor's appointments and funerals. So we took her out for breakfast on Tuesday, and went shopping for new earrings. We took her to Bagels and Beans for breakfast and she ate about 3 times what we've seen her eat in the last couple of years. You could tell she was really enjoying it. We got shopping, get her the earrings, we're walking back to the car, and I point to the place where we had had breakfast an hour earlier and as a joke, I said "Oh look! Bagels and Beans! We should go there sometime." and she says "I think we've eaten there before." DH says "Yes, about an hour ago." and she says "Oh really? Did we?" She couldn't remember.

So then yesterday, we went to the home to celebrate Christmas with them, and E had gotten some bird feeder things for my FIL. He loves to watch the birds, so he can hang the feeders up on their balcony and watch the birds come eat from them. Anyway, DH gives MIL the empty box from the earrings. She opens the box, looks confused, he snaps his fingers like he's a magician and says "They're in your ears!" and she reaches up to feel them there. She didn't remember going to get them. So it was kind of a funny moment, but also kind of sad that she's declining so much. Then we came home and watched Noelle on Disney Plus and opened presents. It was nice. E handled my gifts because we discovered a couple of weeks ago that DH hadn't planned on getting anything for me because he "Didn't know what I wanted" and I had gotten gifts for everyone else, and E didn't want me to have to get all my own gifts.

She made these for me.

Weird...it's not working...I'll have to come back later and try again. But she made me some earrings, and she knows my love of books and stationary and got me a Wicked pocket journal and a Stitch erasable pen. I had just commented that I was sad they didn't seem to make cute/pretty erasable pens, because I LOVE writing utensils, but I prefer erasable ones, but you could only get plain ones. She went to the bookstore to get me a bookmark and found an erasable pen with Stitch on it, so she got it instead of the bookmark. She did a really good job getting gifts for me!

I went pretty far overboard with eating, so I decided to hop on the scale yesterday. It also stresses me, but I wanted to test a theory...while also justifying freezing the remaining cookies that were proving to be too tempting to skip. 🤣

So, I jumped on the scale after only two days of cleaner eating. I can't recall if it was 6 or 7 pounds above my pre-Hanukkah low, but it's the same amount that I spiked after Thanksgiving and after my birthday. Granted it's the lowest starting weight of the three eating events, but it's funny how it's consistently 6-7 pounds. The consistency gave me peace this time vs. stressing me out. Like, I know it's probably not even a single pound of fat and it will come back off as I go back to better food choices. My clothes still fit ok and the new jeans I bought go on, so there's that. I stayed consistent with workouts and walking during all of this. My sleep has suffered since my gut health hurts my sleep, but again...I know this will correct itself if I just go back to a normal diet. I think the active helps and it helped in a way that I wasn't expecting. The worse I ate, the harder it was for me to do the physical things I've been doing. So, it also served as a motivator to get back to better fuel.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. At the end, I'm going to share cookie pics. This is my second year of doing cake mix crinkle cookies. I think they are my new favorite. I made chocolate chip for David as those are his fave. I also experimented with my traditional shortbread and I am so happy with the end result. I am horrible when it comes to rolling out dough and using cookie cutters. I also don't enjoy piping, so fancy sugar cookies are out. This year, I bought silicone molds and baked my shortbread in those molds. After the cookies cooled, I popped them out, worked with candy melts and sprinkles/dragees to fill the same molds, and then I inserted the rough side of the cooked cookies back into the molds to cool. This way, one side of the cookie had the shape of the mold in cookie form (kind of like impression cookie cutters) and the other side had a candy coating in the shape of the mold. This is going to be my thing going forward.

I have been really good on staying on top of my workouts...maybe even overdoing it a bit when it comes to walking. Although, I think I'm becoming pretty speedy and efficient...to the point that I might seriously entertain marathon training at some point in the future. At the very least, I'm thinking about a half in March. My walking pace is now around a 13.8 minute mile, my daily minimum is up to just over 6 miles, and my long walks are now all in the 10-13 mile range. My gym work is progressing more slowly, but I inch up a couple of pounds here and there. I'm also really feeling a lot of support of late. People on the trails are either praising my speedy pace or literally stopping me to say hi because they see me out there all the time and are applauding the dedication. In the gym, more and more people are praising the transformation and dedication as well. Sam was with me the other night and was shocked that one of the really fit and ripped gym guys came over to commend me. Not that outside praise is what's driving me, but it certainly does not hurt.

In light of all of the inflammation from Christmas and Hanukkah, I think I am going to stick to cleaner foods for New Year's. Although, I will say that the smoked turkey was a great call. It's been a nice lean leftover option for me that can be combined really well with any number of more healthful options. That being said, I am going to treat myself to a major indulgence that night. I'm not a wine drinker but I've often wondered if I'd like wine and champagne if I had good stuff. While it's not a regular thing for me, I've noticed this theory holds true for things like bourbon and scotch. In any event, I bought a really nice bottle of champagne for New Year's this year and that's going to be my holiday indulgence. If I don't like it, I can at least say I tried and it'll be a respectable bottle of bubbly that proves the point.

Here's the cookie pics. Hope you all have a Happy and Safe New Year!!!

(Santa's hat would not stay on for the one mold. I also need to get cleaner with the chocolate melts, but still happy with the results)

Happy New Years Eve! Hope you all have a wonderful transition to the new year. We are just hanging out at home. E went to a friend's house, but A really doesn't like fireworks, and our neighborhood isn't safe with them anyway. But this is the last year that they are legal, thank goodness!! I'm under no disillusion that people won't manage to get them from Germany or Belgium, but it will be harder and it will be policed, so if someone is creating a racket, the police will be able to do something about it. Certain things have been illegal for years, but people just go over the border and bring them back. Next year, that will hopefully be policed more.

I am so looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow!!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Hopefully, the police will enforce it if people set them off. They're technically illegal in our area but are perfectly legal less than a mile away (different county and residential laws); however, the police have just given up. So, any holiday where fireworks can be sold in the adjacent county means fireworks going off in our neighborhood. My biggest worry is that it's been so dry this fall/winter and it would take so little for the trees to go up in flames.

Happy first Monday of the new year!

I thought I posted last week, but I apparently did not. New Year's was our typical low key at home. We did try to make it fun with some indulgent drinking experiments. David spent his night comparing a 12 year vs 15 year single malt scotch brand's offerings. Meanwhile, I compared a premium bottle of champagne to viral favorite $10 bottle of sparkling wine from Trader Joes. We also experimented with drinking vessels to see if the festive favorite was really inferior to the sommelier's choice. David liked both bottles of scotch and would gladly drink either one, but noted the 15 year was nice and rich compared to the 12. For the champagne, the premium stuff was the obvious winner...although, I've confirmed I still don't love champagne. It tasted better, was smooth enough that I could polish off the bottle with ease, no hangover, I'm no expert but I could pick up things in the bouquet and overall depth of flavor, and the bubble production was far superior. The sommelier's choice of using a white wine glass (since I don't own tulips) was a fail. The coupe glass was the worst, but the festive flute bubbled endlessly and it held the bouquet better to the point that I could really taste a difference. The TJs stuff tasted like cheap bubbly wine. We ended up using it for mimosas.

So, some fun New Year fitness stories...and it's only the 5th!

1. On January 1st, I got up to go for a moderate distance walk. I was grateful for lots of energy, no hangover, and decent weather. As I neared the 2.5 mile mark in the route I'd designed for the day, I saw a crowd up ahead. Now, I knew the Texas Marathon (and half marathon) were this day in my town. In fact, I ran it back in 2020. I thought about doing the half a couple of weeks ago but decided against it because I wanted to drink on NYE. The old race route was deeper into our town, but this year's route covered 75% of my weekday morning route...which happened to be part of my plan for 1/1. So, I ended up in the middle of the race! It was so much fun to have people cheering me on, people I normally see walking their dogs were set up with signs and even shot/mimosa stations, and I met a lovely man whose running pace was similar to my walk and we chatted for a solid 1.5 miles after I paused so he could save a turtle that had positioned himself in the middle of the green belt. I ended up going a total of 9.3 miles that day (since it was a moderate day for me), but it was such a fun surprise and fun way to start off my fitness in the new year.
2. I've been to the gym several times in the new year and it's been fun interacting with some of the longer-term employees as well as the regulars. I don't converse a lot while I'm there but as we hit the season where everyone and their mother is trying to get healthy it's been kind of rewarding to be recognized as a consistent figure in a sea of newbies...like I've done good things and belong. It's hard to describe but it's just an unexpected boost from the hard work and consistency I've been putting in.
3. Last Monday, I had to resort to treadmill use for my morning walk. I can't even use my walking pad at home because my standard pace is now a bit too fast for it...aside from it being horribly narrow and unsafe at the highest speeds. While I prefer the PF at the front of our neighborhood, the local franchisee bought a gym that's a 2-3 minute drive from my house (maybe only a mile walk) and has turned it into a PF. Sure, the equipment transformation will take a year but I have access. So, just a quick drive Monday morning and I was on a treadmill for 6+ miles. It's a totally different vibe and crowd...not to mention 1/4 of the treadmills and lots of people right on top of me. Still, it's going to be really helpful on mornings where I need a gym treadmill or do things in reverse. So, that was big.
4. I have been hovering near the half marathon distance for my long walks for over a month now. On Saturday, I decided it was time to just do it...assuming I didn't have any issues along the way. I mapped it out, fed and hydrated myself accordingly, packed a little nutrition in my pocket, and put in a 13.14 mile walk. I then biked a gentle 8.53 miles to loosen up my legs at home, hit the gym for leg day (had a surprising amount of strength and energy), and then hit a hydrobed to try and massage out some of the day. It all just made me feel really accomplished...like we're doing big things and maybe a marathon is in this body at some point. At the very least, I may do a walker friendly half in March.

In other New Year's news, rather than doing traditional resolutions, like last year...I got a head start in late December on goals/ So, last week, I...
1. Started my goal of getting digital records of my physical photos. I have a LONG way to go, but I started with my albums from a European vacation in 2000. I still don't have the heart to physically dismantle them because I worked so hard on assembly and artifact retention. So, I took pictures of pictures vs. formal scanning. Still, I now have everything from all 24 rolls of film + some of the little things I held onto like packaging and tickets, digitally photographed and in albums.
2. Last year, I sorted out my jewelry. There was a pile to keep, a pile to discard, and a pile to fix. The pile to discard was then further separated into gold vs. silver. I had quite a few pieces I've been meaning to fix for decades but have serious trust issues when it comes to putting some of these special pieces into the hands of a stranger. We have a local jeweler that gets great reviews and has been around for years, so I finally took the plunge. After going through the discard pile one last time, I went in last Monday and not only sold them all of my gold and silver scrap, I trusted them with my dead watches and favorite pieces in need of fixing. My watches were just batteries, so I had them back in hand and working (including my favorite) right there on the spot. Gold has been high, so I got a nice sum for my scrap and was able to apply a portion of that to my repairs. The three necklaces and two bracelets were a bit trickier, but they had them back to me by Friday. I will admit that I started to tear up when he helped me put on my big chain. It broke around the time Kendall was born. It's a combination of my grandfather's pocket watch chains soldered together to make a necklace. Between the body transformation and the jewelry, I'm really starting to feel like me! So, that's kind of my theme going forward...doing things that restore ME! The real me!

OK...sorry for the novel but hope you all had a fun and safe New Year's and have gotten off to a great start in 2026.
