While it seems that they've become more flexible, some here seems to depend on county, courthouse and luck with the various clerks and judges. That lengthy case I served on coincided with the Super Bowl. I recall the judge saying she wouldn't excuse anyone for pre-planned trips and that you'd be tracked down and charged if you were selected to serve and skipped out for travel. I had something similar in 2007. I recall the judge and the attorneys saying that planned travel is not a reasonable excuse...and this was after trying to reschedule with the clerk. That county also wouldn’t take age of children into consideration. With this recent case, the judge actually did take upcoming travel into consideration.

So you’re one of the people I envy when I’m called 😂 There are always a couple of people who know the judge or one of attorneys. They have some cutesy chatter and the rest of us look at each other and know who’s not getting picked.

These judges need to get real. You can't expect people to miss vacations they've paid for and planned. I don't think travel insurance covers jury duty, either.

When I went to jury duty, the judge made one of the jurors change his next day's job interview. I think that's ridiculous. This guy had a family and was unemployed. The summons is on the same day as my grandmother's birthday. We were hoping to visit, but with airfare and all of these crazy, mass cancellations, I hadn't. I was waiting for things to settle down. I guess the decision has been made for me! :hilarious:

Good morning.🌅

It feels like early Autumn this morning. Who turned off the summer? :coldfeet:

I started a six week challenge today. I'll see if I finish it. I get bored easily and I usually end up switching to a different type of workout after a month or two. Today was a lower body workout.

I am back on the straight & narrow with food after this weekend. Wow. 🐷 :hilarious:.

My husband wants to go to Liberty State Park for the 4th to view fireworks. I am not quite sold on it. It is going to be crowded, I am sure. The upside is we don't have to worry about parking or driving back down here. Alternatively, there is a roof top deck in his building, so we could always go up there to watch fireworks. I'll think about it. I really like my back yard and I like chilling out in it. I have an outdoor furniture set with a tarp-like thing (it's not as ugly as it sounds) over it for shade. It's blissful to sit out there in the early evening. 🥰
Tell me about it. I cooked all day just to warm up the house.
I've done LSP a couple of time and while it is a great spot and fun it is also VERY crowded. I'd say about as crowded as the mall in DC for the 4th. Traffic in that end of the city is a nightmare both before and well after the show is finished. Think exiting TTC on capacity night

Yeah, jury duty in Baltimore County isn't too terrible. You are assigned a certain day and number, so if you get called, you have to go, but if you don't get called, you don't have to go. Then when you get there, if you're not selected that day, you're done and you can't be called back for three years. You're allowed to reschedule your day one time for various reasons (work hardship, medical, travel, etc.). So even if it's near a travel period, you can push it back. I've been assigned twice and both times I had to reschedule, once because I'd had surgery right before the date assigned, and then this time most recently under a work hardship. It was simple to do both times. The first time I didn't get called, so I didn't have to go. This time I had to go for half the day and everyone got released, but I still can't be called back for three years. I took my laptop and did some work.

My husband's apartment is right by LSP, so we'd drive up early in the day, walk over (& back) and then spend the night in his place. Plus he has indoor parking in his building. He's right by the ramp to get on I-78. It's all very convenient. I'm still thinking about it. If nothing else, it's a change of scenery.

You'll be fine in that case. The Statue of Liberty as a backdrop for fireworks is a favorite of mine.

Good morning.

I did a HIIT workout this AM. I liked it because I did not feel rested when I got up. I felt like I got a good workout in, but without killing myself. No burpees, no mountain climbers, just standing cardio, with a few ab moves on the mat at the end. It was perfect for how I am feeing today. 👌

It's another quiet day here. I'm making a recipe I found in the NYT. It's a much of veggies roasted with chunks of feta and slices of lemon. I am going to serve it with orzo.

Any cardio friends on here? I have been dealing with a herniated disc for about a year and a half and sometimes my weightlifting causes pain so I am looking into trying running (yuck!) I have no endurance and would love for some good app recommendations. I've lost 60 pounds about three years ago but still can't run a full 5k.

Welcome! if you don't like running and want to build endurance try power walking and aerobics for those with 2 left feet. I like Leslie Sansone
Skip the weights of bands if they bother you. She also has an app https://walkathome.com/
I'd try a couple of her free workouts before springing for the app to see if you like her style. She has everything from 5 minutes up to 5 miles which can be done in about an hour on the app
Have you talked to your doctor about doing yoga?

Thanks so much!

I have done Yoga and Pilates and found both really nice and relaxing for me. :) Just trying to keep in shape while not pushing my back to its limits and jogging/ walking seems to keep the pain at bay vs weightlifting and sitting. I'll check out those videos later today!

I really like this idea! I'll be living vicariously through you if you choose to go. It's something I've always wanted to do.

We lived so close, but my dad is anti-crowd and would never attempt this for the 4th. The closest we got was 1986. He wanted to see some of the tall ships and ceremonial stuff for Liberty Weekend, but didn't want to be in the mess of the crowds. So, he scouted out a spot in Jersey City for us to stand for a while mid morning on the 4th and watch the various ships come in. There were other people there with chairs and full day cooler/camp set ups so they'd be set through the fireworks.

I’d start in the gym with elliptical and recumbent bike to start and gauge how many minutes and miles you can do. Start slow and progress from there.

I don't have any good app recommendations, but I know seated ellipticals are very kind to people suffering from back ailments.

I was in the city for the ships on the 3rd that year and in LSSP for Til Tuesday and hall and Oats plus the fireworks.

Yes, I don't think jury duty is a covered matter. Considering how many people ignore a jury summons and use the "they can't prove I ever received it" angle, you'd think they'd be more accommodating for those who do show up.

That's really sad. I would hope they were understanding with his need to reschedule the interview, but I feel like the judge should have been more flexible with that. I'm sorry all of the crazy prices and cancelations have forced your hand with your plans.

Harris County used to do something like that, but if your number didn't get called, you could be carried over to the next day. Now, they assign you a juror room and everyone gets called. I believe the room I was in wound up filling four or five jury pools. If you get selected, it's only 6 months before you can be called again. When I lived in Brazoria County (south of Houston), I learned that you can get called to the big county courthouse or the smaller satellite courthouses. The big county one for Brazoria was awful and the least flexible, but the smaller one was comical. It was a more rural set up/feel and a third of the jury pool was dismissed because people knew each other. The rest of us sat there waiting to be selected for a trio of traffic court cases where the defendants insisted on a jury trial. I remember the first case involved a guy who was ticketed for going 72 in a 55 in the pouring rain. This little courthouse was a whopping 5 minutes from our home and I was home before lunch, so it's the only time I didn't mind being summoned.

You may or may not appreciate this, but this prompted me to do some digging on YouTube and I found this gem. I'm still watching, so I don't know how far it goes into the coverage. I did see that the person must have spliced recordings, because it goes into a soap opera before cutting to the next segment of coverage. :hilarious: The commercials alone are triggering all kinds of memories.

Good morning!

Sunday involved a couple of hours of walking dogs in the baking sun. It's unconventional, but it's a workout of sorts. Some of the dogs pull, so it adds to the workout factor. I'm also happy to report that I walked out of there without adopting anything. They had a Great Pyrenees mix come in...and she looked more Pyr than anything else. She was an absolute sweetheart and a real beauty.

I'm glad we did the dog walking, because yesterday became an unexpected rest day. I had two appointments before what I planned for gym time...ear piercing for the younger one and a trip back to the doctor for the leg infection for the older one. I was stung by a red wasp while I was opening our driveway gate. I quickly slathered on a baking soda paste, took an allergy pill, and jumped back in the car, but man...this is not comfortable! The only other time I experienced a wasp sting, it was a more standard yellow paper wasp. Not that it tickled, but it wasn't like this. This one stung my wrist...where there is redness, swelling and itchiness. Shortly after it happened, I started having strange sensations throughout my hand and forearm. It was later followed by joint pain in my elbow and shoulder. All of this is supposedly normal, but it's not pleasant. What's funny...when we got to the tattoo parlor for the piercing, the guy went to his big first aid kit and got me a little insect sting wipe. It actually helped for a bit.

My older one has to rest until the infection clears and the younger one can't do anything more than arm work, so I'm going to be on my own in the gym.
