working out for Disney

Good morning :)

We hit the gym last night, but my mind wasn't up for it. Instead of doing my normal cardio, I used the elliptical for a 10 minute warm up and then worked on legs. I was still not in a leg day lower body mood, but I pushed through. I did sets on the calf raise, leg press, leg curl, glute press, seated crunch, and the hip abductor. I walked for 10 minutes at the end.

So, the younger one FINALLY got into the doctor yesterday. For weeks we'd been thinking this was her Achilles. I never even considered something that wasn't tendon or muscle related. Before seeing the dr, the assistant came in and did a work up of the area. As soon as she gently squeezed Sam's leg in one area, I knew we had it all wrong. Mind you, my child wasn't the best at illustrating to us where it hurt and would get really annoyed when we bugged her about it. Still, she jumped when pressure was applied to this one spot. The dr confirmed my new fear...stress fracture. She's in a boot until mid July...no batting, no softball, no lower body work involving that leg unless it's swimming. And I don't think she's quite separated that going to a pool party with friends and horsing around in the pool isn't what the doctor authorized. Heck, even my husband doesn't get that. We're still debating about going to Colorado and I had to explain to him why she shouldn't be going down the waterslide

Hopefully, they will have a better grasp of what parts of Yellowstone they can open vs.what needs to be kept closed by the time you leave. I read the last they closed the park entirely was in 1988 because of wildfires.
Yeah....I remember those wildfires. We went the next year, and it was so sad to see everything blackened. That was the last time I was there.

I saw an article that says the northern loop is going to be closed all summer. They aren't sure they are going to rebuild the road between Gardiner and down through Mammoth, because it would always be susceptible to more events like this. But I have no idea what they'd do if they DON'T rebuild it....they HAVE to have a way to get through there, right? But in any case, that part is not going to be open while we're there, and they have to have a way to limit the numbers of people in the now smaller area. They are talking about a sort of reservation system or controlled entry, so I'm going to have to keep my eyes out for that. If we need reservations, I want to be sure to have them made ASAP.

Wildfires are no joke. About 12 years ago, wildfires were blowing in Kissimmee and the theme parks were affected. Those times were very difficult, chocking on the smell and smoke from the wildfires. A N95 mask could have sure come in handy back then! We just put rolled up shirts and covered our faces.

Good morning ☀️

Today I did a 25 minute work out from the free app I have. It is a cool app, it has different types of workouts with different body part focuses. You can select the music, how long you want to warm up, work out and cool down. You can also select how difficult you want your workout to be. Then it generates a workout for you. No two work outs are ever alike.

Wow, as soon as I started warming up, I was grateful the workout was 25 min, which was the suggested time. There were some moves I'd never seen before and some I struggled to get right at first, then finally caught on for the last 5 seconds. :hilarious: I felt like I didn't have enough time to set up for the next exercise, but I can fix that going forward. I think because there are so many variables to a work out, there is a learning curve for getting the most out of your workout. This app is good for travel, because you can select a no equipment workout.I was totally humbled today!😅
Is it an app that anyone can install? That sounds great! Can you cast it to a tv or do you have to do it on your phone?

It is such a shame for you, other travelers, and people in the area (especially those dependent on tourists) about the closure and washouts. Mammoth was one of my favorite areas when we went too. We stayed a night in the hotel there and it was great to have more time in that area because we weren't in a rush to get to a hotel for a night. It sounds like you have some solid ideas for a substitute on that time that would have been spent there. I wish we had added a day to go to the Tetons, would that be an option for you? I'm sure your family will have fun no matter what though, it is a beautiful area as you know.
We see the Tetons before we head into Yellowstone. That's already in the itinerary. I've got things all over Wyoming except in the Southwestern corner, and the Sheridan area with the Bighorns. Everything else is covered. I'm going to have to rework some things and have an alternate itinerary.

Oh no!! That's so hard at her age....summer vacation and you can't do anything! And especially since she's usually so active and athletic. This must be so hard for her!! How can they tell it's a stress fracture without an x-ray?

It's so crazy to see some of those videos. I found myself going through all of my pictures to see it with the road still intact.

Obviously, I don't make the decisions, but I'm guessing that they'll close off the road between Mammoth and the north entrance once the main threat has passed and damage assessment can fully be done. So, hopefully that will still allow access to the Mammoth area and the part of the loop heading out towards Tower/Roosevelt/Lamar Valley. I guess time will tell.
The article I read today said that the north loop would be closed all summer, meaning that Mammoth, Lamar Valley, and Tower Falls will all be inaccessible.

Unfortunately, I think you're right. A lot of the pictures we've seen are from the areas in and near the north entrance/Gardiner, but NPS has a growing list of known impacts on the YNP site that haven't been shown on the news. I pulled this bulleted list from the site below.

Known damage and issues

  • Known damage (at this time) to some park roads includes:
    • North Entrance (Gardiner, Montana) to Mammoth Hot Springs: road washed out in multiple places, significant rockslide at Gardner Canyon
    • Tower Junction to Northeast Entrance: segment of road washed out near Soda Butte Picnic Area, mudslides, downed trees
    • Tower-Roosevelt to Canyon Junction (Dunraven Pass): mudslide on road
    • Canyon Junction to Fishing Bridge: Segment of road just south of Canyon Junction potentially compromised and closed for evaluation
  • The power continues to be out in multiple locations in the park.
  • Water and wastewater systems at Canyon Village and Mammoth Hot Springs are being impacted by flooding conditions and are being monitored.

It sounds like the parts I've highlighted below are what they're thinking they may be able to open. They mention the southern loop, which should include Norris to Canyon to Fishing Bridge; however, the bulleted list of damage notes a segment of road just south of Canyon possibly being an issue. Seeing the issues between Tower, Soda Butte and the Northeast Entrance, and Canyon to Tower through Dunraven Pass...it sounds like anything north of Norris Junction or Canyon is going to be a no-go for some time :(

EDIT- Also seeing buzz that they are looking at reservations with timed entry into the park whenever they determine it's safe to open the southern portion of the grand loop. I'd keep an ear out for this and familiarize yourself with the Recreation.gov app. This is what they've been using for all of the other national parks (at least that I know of) utilizing timed entries and reservations for crowd control. Reservations will likely cost a little bit (on top of your park admission cost). Most of the things we've booked are $1-2 (US) per day or per head.

Thankfully, he feels she should be good to come out of the boot when we go back on July 19th. If it works out like that, she'll at least be boot free for the cruise and Universal. So, fingers crossed.

That's what has me a little nervous about this. You can't see the fracture on the X-ray, but I've read that this is normal and he echoed this information. You can see sort of a shadowy bump near the area of her leg that hurts. I've seen this kind of cloudy shadowy look before on my older one's X-rays as her broken ankle was healing. He said that the combo of that shadowy bump and the pain being in the same spot as that bump is a pretty strong indicator of a stress fracture in that area where bone regrowth has started. I hope he's right and this heals soon.

I really hope they can figure out a reasonable way to rebuild. I can't even begin to think about what it would do to all of those businesses in Gardiner. Also something like the Roosevelt Arch would become something the average guest would probably never get to see.

This is what the Yellowstone page itself says:
"
June 14 2022 Update

The road from Gardiner, MT to Cooke City, MT. will likely not reopen for the rest of the 2022 season due to the recent road damage. This will adversly effect the Northern Loop rd and surrounding communities at the North and Northeast Entrance including Gardiner, Mammoth and Cooke City. Hard closures will take place at Canyon and at Norris going north for the season. Assesment on when to reopen the Southern Loop rd including Canyon Village is underway based on the current flood damage but should reopen relatively soon. When the South Loop does reopen, it will include the West Entrance, the South Entrance and the East Entrance. Assesement should take approximately a week or less .... NPS"

So the two northern entrances will be closed, and you won't be able to go farther than Norris or Canyon. I'm hoping we'll be able to reach Artist Point and inspiration point, but I don't know how much will be open off the main road. They mentioned the timed entries and reservations already a couple of days ago, which is why I was looking at the website. I want to be quick to get a reservation when they figure all that out. I'm imagining something like the Disney Park Reservation system, where you have to make a reservation for that day or you won't get in, and they have timed entry here at zoos and theme parks and such....or did for the last two years when anything was open. If you didn't get an entry time early in the morning, you didn't get as much time to do stuff as the people who started earlier. So I want to make sure I'm on the ball.

Hopefully, she can still go to the pool party and not horse around? I know it's hard to tease the two apart. lol But it's probably better to be low key and still have the social aspect than miss out altogether. But that bites to have your activity restricted in the summer, of all the seasons. 👎

I checked up on it and you can Chromecast. I mirror through my phone to my Apple TV. It was free when I downloaded it when we were in the thick of the pandemic. I have no idea if it still is. I know they have "free versions" of their apps, which are still decent, IMO. They had a sale about a week ago where you get all six of their apps for $20/year. One my apps is $20/mo! I get good use out of the yoga, meditation and now this HIIT app. I have yet to try the barre. They have sales with different discounts all the time.

Good morning. ☔

It's storming here (again).

I did an upper body strength training workout, which had an awfully high number of burpees in it (for a strength workout, at least). :cautious:

Nothing much else going on here today. If the rain stops, I am going to do some yard work. Big fun on tap today. Woo hoo. 🎉

Yoga day for me but I had to go out in the storm to stake a couple of tomato plants. Outside may not happen again

We may not even get to go on our trip. When I watched the news this morning, they said that our airport is dumping 30% of flights in July and August to combat the issues they've been having where it's so busy that people are missing flights even when they come hours early. They asked the airlines to voluntarily look into what could be canceled, but that apparently didn't happen. So they are going to start just scrapping flights and we won't know for a few days to a week whether ours is one of them. Airports in Germany and Belgium are having the same issues....Belgium is dumping HALF their flights. So booking somewhere else is not going to help. So now we wait.

Good morning,

Another gym day yesterday. We decided to switch it up with cardio and hit the recumbent bikes for 30 minutes. We made it through (I went close to 8 miles) but had two observations.
1. The seat positioning system is about a half inch off from my home bike. So, we either feel like we're just a bit too close or just a bit too far.
2. The seats have no padding. My home recumbent has a nicely cushioned seat...gym is hard plastic. Let's just say 30 minutes on this thing was not very kind to our rear ends!
We also worked arms and back yesterday. So, I guess that makes today a leg day 😂

On a positive note with the broken leg situation, we're not out the $ for the prospect camp we'd reserved. This tournament had a bunch of college prospect camps tied to it, which you could book separately from tournament game play. At the time when my husband was booking, Sam was all about going to Texas A&M's camp. I was pushing for another school (something farther from home that we might not want to travel to for stand-alone camps at their school campuses) and 24 hours later, she had also changed her mind, but changing would have meant losing 30% of our payment. So we stuck with A&M. June 1st was the last day to cancel/change and get anything back. Well, I guess it was an omen, because A&M's head coach retired and her replacement has yet to be announced. So, the A&M camp was canceled. Those enrolled could either be placed in another camp with openings or get a refund. These camps are not cheap, and she obviously can't participate, so we gladly took that unexpected refund. We may still be allowed to go and observe camps, so depending on time, we may pick another school or cluster camp and go take a look.
