If you used the revealed letter in step 2 in your step 3 guess, you would have known its exact location for step 4, which could have given you the win in step 4, and definitely by step 5.
In a way, the 'hard mode' helps by forcing you to use revealed letters.

I didn’t know I wasn’t in hard mode. I’ll adjust it.
I didn’t know hard mode was a thing. It only makes sense to me to work it that way.
