I think you play the version that you can’t do what I did: ”throw away” a guess on a word it can’t be in order to eliminate or find the right letter. If I hadn’t, I would have likely lost the rhyming game too.

Yeah, when you play in "hard" mode, you have to use all of the letters you've had correct in previous guesses. So, after my third guess where I got the last four letters, the game required me to play those letters in all subsequent guesses (and in those positions). Sometimes it makes it easier, but it becomes a real gamble with rhyming words.
