Will The Monorail line ever be expanded?

The Monorail is so amazing. I know that it would cost multi-millions of dollars to expand The Monorail system beyond MK and Epcot, but I would love it if they did. Especially with gas at outrageous prices and the cost of the diesel going into all of the buses, perhaps they would come out ahead in time in regards to the cost of expanding. Just think: the monorail picking you up and EVERY resort and going to ever theme park and Down Town Disney. That would be amazing. What is everyone's opinion of this?

Do a search, there are many threads on this.

Since the ground is so soft, it takes a lot of money to properly build the monorail footings; some say $1M per mile, others put it a lot more than that.

Gas @ $3.50 per gallon. Monorail expansion seems to be doable again. Break out the cement casts!!!
Concrete and steel are on the order of 10 times more expensive then it was when that million dollar per mile figure was done. Put the casts back in storage!

I think everyone is hoping that one day it will happen, but I just dont think its feasable. I think the costs are way more than 1 million per mile from what I have read.....so just not gonna happen most likely as nice as it would be.

Well...

I would sort of like it to just pick me up right here in front of my house here in Pennsylvania...:lookaroun
I know it will never happen, but it's just fun to dream.:snore:

From Pennsylvania could we extend it just a teeny bit to Nova Scotia?

Maybe we can get corporate sponsorship for every mile. There could be a giant Coke can tunnel, McDonald's golden arches hills to go over and Exxon could sponsor and oil slick so we can come to a sliding stop :ROFLOL:

I like the way you think...

Disney's monorail "problem" is indicative of why large inflexible transportation systems don't work as well as systems that quickly expand and contract on demand". Buses do just that. You can put a bus anywhere demand dictates. Its not as easy to do that with Monorails. I think a light rail system would probably be a better middle-ground investment. Wonder if they'd ever consider that.

While that could work, I could see a lot of guests wondering/complaining, "Why didn't they just expand the monorail?"

Even though it could be a great new transportation method :)

Yes, a new section of Monorail track will be added dropping the Monorail at a very steep angle down the slopes of Night Kingdom's MountRidesPlace, through multiple hoops of fire.

I always wonder where the numbers come from when people say 1 million a mile, 18 million a mile etc...

Projects like this would be so site dependent it is hard to get a really good guess at how much it would really cost. One of the steps in estimating a project is to first see how much similar projects have cost to complete, such as:

Naha, Okinawa - 7.8 miles @ 533 million = 68 million per mile

Kuala Lumpur - 5.3 miles @311 million = 59 million per mile

Las Vegas, initial - 3.6 miles @ 352 million = 98 million per mile

Las Vegas, extension - 3.1 @ 337 million = 109 million per mile

Seattle Green Line - 14 miles @1.25 billion = 87 million per mile

Of course some of these systems have undergound sections or traversed large waterways which will effect the overall cost per mile. However the numbers that are always tossed around do not even appear to be close to the target.

That being said I would love it if they expanded the monorail, it is a part of the Disney World experience for me and one that I enjoy, whether it is feasible or not to expand the system.

As it would be cool it is not in Disney's interest to expand the monorail, the huge cost is not going to bring in any new guests. People can still ride the existing monorail and get all the joy without Disney putting in another dime!

It would be very interesting to see a breakdown in construction cost. If you had no red tape, environmental impact studies, lawyers, etc. etc. What would be the true cost.
