Wildfires!!!!

The fires can break out quickly, and can also be extinguished/controlled just as quickly, so there is no way to know what would be a 'safe" route...your alternate route could turn out to be a worse choice.

Just pay attention to the traffic reports, and hope for the best.

the only other way of coming into Orlando from I-95 (main road speaking) would be to continue south past Daytona and go west on sr528 (near the Kennedy Space Center) ... that would take you right straight across pas Orlando Intl. Airport and towards I-4 ... this is definetly the long way to get here

There are a couple of back ways (US 17 among them, which can be picked up by going about one mile on I-10 West in Jacksonville, then picking up 17 south) but they are a bit complicated, and at least one involves going through the Ocala National Forest, which may not be the best place to be if you're trying to avoid forest fires. There is also a cut-off that can take you to 192 through Deland (just before Daytona), then Sanford, then in the back way, but again, it will take longer, and is more complicated.

We went in May 07 and there were lots of wildfires going on. I remember driving through Valdosta and Lake City wondering how in the world people could be living there. It was like driving in thick fog. We did end up having to take a few detours because of road closures. I can't begin to explain it as DH was driving and we ended up lost several times. Good luck!
