Wilderness Lodge reservation timetable

Has anyone here ever made a late reservation for the WL near the Christmas holiday? Circumstances do not allow me to consider a trip at the moment, but I am keeping an open mind toward going for 5 days or so during the weeks (more properly stated days) surrounding Christmas. The problem is that I don't know if or when I can commit to the trip. How late would be too late for room availability? Have any of you made a "last minute" reservation for the days ahead/after Christmas? Accordingly, do you think that such a plan would be ridiculously impossible?

The week between Christmas Day and New Year's Day is the most crowded one at WDW.
If you are going before Christmas Day you would have a better chance.

In any case all you can do is keep trying.
Good luck.

Quite honestly it is a crap shoot. Something might pop up but more than likely you will be out in the cold. What I would do is lock up a room only reservation now. All it will cost you is a one night's deposit and you can cancel with a full refund up to 5 days out if you need to.

Can you afford the one day's deposit, knowing that, if you cancel in enough time, you'd get it back? Regardless, I know WL is popular in general and more so during the holidays, so if you're in a position to book JUST the room now, pay a night's deposit knowing that you can cancel as late as 5 days before arrival and get your money back, I'd do it.

From mousesavers.com

When booking a "room only" reservation, you are subject to very few restrictions:

*

You must pay one night's room rate as a deposit within 7 days of reserving your room. (Except when booking online at DisneyWorld.com, in which case the deposit is required at time of booking.)
*

Final payment of the remainder is due at check-in. (Except when booking online at DisneyWorld.com, in which case full payment is required if reserving within 45 days of arrival.)
*

You can change or cancel your reservation without penalty up until 5 days prior to check-in. (6 days for online bookings.)

When booking a vacation package through WDTC, you will be subject to the following rules:

*

You must pay a $200 deposit within 7 days of reserving your package. (Except when booking online at DisneyWorld.com, in which case the deposit is required at time of booking.)
*

Final payment of the entire remainder is due 45 days prior to check-in. You have to pay in full right away if you are booking less than 45 days in advance.
*

You can change or cancel your reservation without penalty up until 45 days in advance. From 7 to 44 days in advance, there is a cancellation fee of $100. If you cancel 6 days or less in advance, you pay a $200 penalty.
*

Any changes that result in a rate change, such as applying a discount code, reducing number of days and/or changing to a differently-priced resort, made 45 days or less prior to arrival, are subject to a $50 fee.
*

Beware - WDTC usually adds nonrefundable travel insurance to your package by default. If you don't want it, tell them while you are making the reservation. Once you hang up, it's too late. You can add the insurance later if you wish, up until your final payment is due. You can also buy travel insurance directly and usually save some money that way.
*

Airfare added to your reservation is also nonrefundable. It's hardly ever a good deal, either. I strongly advise booking airfare separately. Visit the Airfares page for hints on how to save on airfare!

Thank you all for your information and advice. It seems that my wisest option is to scrounge up enough for the deposit and make a reservation ASAP. I would hate to lose the availability of a room should things work in my favor toward going for Christmas. I hope that in the end I will be able to make the trip. Thanks again for your advice!

Unfortunately now days I think you need to make a reservation sooner rather than later. Back in 2004 I made a reservation for two courtyard rooms at the WL for 8 nights arriving on 12/25. I did this on 12/23 and received an AP rate of $120/room. Best deal ever, and I don't think I'll ever see or hear anything like that again.
