Hello all

I just have a question about the Wilderness Lodge. Has the lodge ever been a Moderate Resort? I thought I could remember staying at the lodge when it first opened and the lodge was listed/priced as a moderate. Does anyone have any insight on this???

Thank you!

Nope it opened as a deluxe, though it is the least expensive of the group.

As far as the rumors.... I did a little search and found another site's forums. One poster was having trouble changing their reservation and it seems the person she was dealing with was...how shall I say this...less than competent; that person wanted to know why they were downgrading from a deluxe (the Contemporary) to a moderate (the WL). Seems this person had a ton of trouble doing their job and couldn't even find reservations in the computer system.

Maybe it's confusion about Ft Wilderness being reclassed as moderate?

So many people get the two mixed up. We were checking into the WL once and a couple were arguing that they had a reservation even though it could not be found. They were adamant that the had rented a cabin at the WL so it had to be there. :brick:

Thank you for letting me know. I guess I thought it may have been a moderate when it opened because of the lower price, but I was wrong.

Exactly the names are so close it might be easy for someone to get them confused. Maybe time for a Ft Wilderness name change? :lookaroun I'm sure it's been happening since the two have been in existance together?

Fort Wilderness opened in 1971, the WL opened in 1994 so maybe they should have named the lodge something else . I remember them clearing the land in '92 and we first stayed there in '95, love the place. :king:

That's what I mean sort of lol. Soon as WL came along, it opened up for confusion since the names are similar. Love the WL too. It's home to us. We can't bring ourselves to stay anywhere else since it'd feel like like cheating :p

Since the original question has been answered, then on the subject of resorts changing classifications, I thought I read somewhere that Carribbean Beach was originally classified as a value, and then upgraded to a moderate. Is this true?

And if so, did they make any significant changes to make it fit as a moderate, or was it simply more deserving of moderate status all along, hence the reclassification?

I hadn't read that anywhere but I'd be interested to learn the answer. Wasn't the WL originally supposed to be a moderate as well?

Well, realize that when Caribbean Beach opened there were no All-Stars or Pop Century, so it essentially was the value-equivalent for that time period.

Was that also before Coronado Springs, Dixie Landings, and Port Orleans?

But ya, I never stopped to think about whether the current value resorts even existed yet at that time.

Port Orleans and Dixie Landings were shortly after Caribbean Beach (CB was 1988 or so, and PO/DL 1991, if I remember right). Coronado Springs only opened around ten years ago.

The CBR opened in October 1988
Coronado Springs - 1997
Port Orleans Resort French Quarter - May 1991
Port Orleans Resort Riverside - originally opened as Disney's Dixie Landings Resort in Feb '92
