Why was Countdown to Extinction changed to Dinosaur?

Where they trying to tie-in the movie with the attraction? I think it sounds stupid; the original name had such an innovative feel to it. Countdown to Extinction sounds more appealing. I sometimes don't understand what goes on in the minds' of Disney Imagineers.:hammer:

Movie tie-in.
Also, some say that after the new name they toned it down, but I don't have any proof of that.

Not all decisions are made by imagineers; in fact, little is left to their descretion...

Tone it down? Changing the name of an attraction won't change the fact that my neck hurts every single time I got off the ride. It's great though.

Uh, no. I believe I said that it was also [rumored] to have been toned down after/during the name change.

DINOSAUR is the only ride on Disney property that actually frightens me... :lookaroun

Toned down? I really don't think so. I rode it back when it was Countdown, and when I rode it recently I liked it even more than I remember. It's pretty wild as far as the ride is concerned...it is already one of the best WDW rides, but if they took the theme a step further and fleshed out some of those pitch-black areas the ride would be a classic. I love the old name. The name Dinosaur is horrible. Dinosaur what?? It doesn't even make sense as a name for a ride. There are no references to the (long forgotten) movie anyway, are there?

I personally liked the original name myself … however let’s not put down the movie "Dinosaur". The plot may not have been the most original and the character development left a little to be desired, but visually that movie was years ahead of it’s time.

I think that would be open to debate.... *coughPixarcough*

I don’t know - the way the CGI was blended into real world environments was almost seamless (much better than Spider-Man 2, a movie that came out 5 years after Dinosaur). I don’t know if you remember the impact that the first 3 minute trailer had on movie audiences, but those three minutes still hold up to almost anything put out by Hollywood today. I think the misconception of Dinosaur is that it was an animated film when in fact it was a live action film with animated characters.

Actually there are. The Iguanadon you rescue is actually Aladar from the movie and of course there's the Carnotaurs, Raptor and meteors.

It's funny how everyone's perception is different. I'm not sure if they toned it down or not, but to me it sure seems to be a lot milder than when it first opened !! Especially, the very last drop at the end. Maybe I am just getting used to it after riding it so much, but I swear it seems milder now !!!

I actually thought it was boring and was disapointed once I got off. There was too much black nothing with just a shot of a dinosaur here and there. If they could flesh out the scenes a lot more so that it really felt like I was riding through prehistoric times instead of just a flash here or there I'd love it.
