Why so few Moderates?

I'm sure the bottom line reason is about money, but here goes. When I first started visiting (10 years old) I hadn't really paid too much attention, but as time goes on and I'm starting to plan my own trips, I'm puzzled as to why there are only four moderate resorts? Then I've read that Coronado Springs might be getting refurb and an upgrade to deluxe status, leaving only three. There are what...8 deluxe, 4 mod and 4 value? Also, the 4 values have something like 8000 rooms! I know the deluxes have varying prices so maybe it's just a label to lure guests. Maybe it's a marketing ploy like the fast food restaurants switching from S, M, and L to M, L, and X-L even though just the drink names and prices changed, not the sizes. I understand the market for the values and there will always be people who have the money for deluxes, so maybe there's not as big a market for the mods? Or maybe the comparison off-property is something Disney doesn't want to compete with? Maybe it's all in the name/labeling? Just curious of your thoughts. Take care.

I don't think you can compare resorts strictly on the number of *different* resorts. Number of rooms would be the better comparison.

Taking some numbers from AllEars, and ignoring the DVC Villas, here's what you get for (approx.) number of rooms:

Value: 8500
Mod: 7150 (and if you add in the FW Cabins, it's 7550)
Deluxe: 6100 (ignoring Swan & Dolphin)

I think it's a pretty decent ratio. Deluxe resorts give you smaller resorts, more personal attention from the staff, which I think is the key. All of the Moderate and Value resorts have over 1000 rooms each (with POFQ being the smallest at just over 1000).

But only one Deluxe (AKL) has over 1000 rooms. And they get as few as the Boardwalk Inn's 378 rooms.

I think having about equal amounts of different categories of resorts allows almost all types of vacationers to find a fit for their budgets. Doesn't really seem like there are less moderate rooms than any of the rest.

Just thought I'd toss this in. When Carribean Beach Resort opened, it was touted as a value resort that would compete with the Holiday Inns, etc on the strip. For a few dollars more (back then) you could get theming with a neat pool, and WDW transportation, ADRs (back in the day when making dinner reservations from your room the night before was considered planning ahead) and a chance to buy EMH tickets, etc.

I considered it a bargain back then, and would stay there frequently, until I discovered I could get a deluxe room for almost the same rate as rack rate there by using my AP.

Then I got spoiled by staying deluxe, and since I usually only stay a night or two, I just make fewer trips.
