Just got back from WDW and saw Duffy quite a bit, but no Oswald. Are there any plans to bring him into the parks? Seems like he should be there

Agreed. I've seen Horace and Clarabelle, but no Oswald. Love the old school 'toons. You'd think with the success of Epic Mickey that he'd have a bigger presence.

from Wikipedia

Though the character Oswald showed up at the parks in Florida and California on the day Disney reacquired him in 2006 (from Universal, who had the original contract to own with walt still in tact" , Oswald is not currently a character in the parks to meet and greet, like so many others are. Disney officials stated that he probably would be someday; they did not want to just haphazardly add him. When the character's future is determined, they are planning a big splash.[3]

Never mind the walkaround character, how about an Oswald ride?

theyd need something to base the ride off of.... the ride wouldnt appeal to children if they dont know who he is .... Theyd need a movie or need him to debut in a mickey clubhouse or something for the content to be appealable to children otherwise its useless

Epic Mickey?

that isnt enough... a game can only go so far in terms of character recognition...if they were to put the main character from kingdom hearts into the parks... 70 percent of children and 100 percent of adults wouldnt know who it was..... as for oswald... most adults who arent disney fanatics wouldnt know who he was

Epic Mickey?

Epic Mickey has a great story and would make a great movie. I don't think your average moviegoer would have to be a gameplayer to enjoy it. After I finished playing it the first time, I went to Youtube where someone had downloaded all the between-level scenes that told Oswald and Mickey's story. They are awesome. Lots of humor, heart, nostalgia and angst. Perfect movie material.

I actually have an Oswald t-shirt and also recently purchased an Oswald stuffed figure from the Disney Store about a month ago. I agree that Oswald should be in the MK kingdom more or at least in the Studio by One Mans Dream.

When Universal returned the rights to the Oswald character to Disney, the deal only included the 26 cartoons that were made by Disney. While under the control of Universal, over 140 Oswald cartoons were made by Walter Lantz and those cartoons were not included in the Oswald return to Disney deal. These cartoons and other Oswald material are still owned by Universal. It would not be in Disney’s best interest to publicize Oswald since it would just put more money in Universal's pocket. The best thing Disney could do right now is put Oswald to sleep.

Oswald is owned by disney as of 2006 ... he came in a trade which let sports commentator Al michaels opt out of contract to sign with nbc sports and nbc/universal sent the rights to oswald to disney

Disney only owns the "Disney Version" of Oswald which is a total of 26 cartoons. All the other (and much better) versions of Oswald account for a little over 140 cartoons and they are all still owned by Universal. The majority of the other cartoons were made by Walter Lantz. Some were also made by the very great Tex Avery!

Disney does not have "exclusive" rights to the Oswald character. They only have the rights to the Disney version of Oswald.

Isn't that rather subjective? Particularly with Oswald gradually falling into the same blandness trap Mickey did as the Lantz run went on and eventually turning into some generic adorable bunny you'd find in a Silly Symphony?

Walt only created 26 Oswald cartoons. He made 9 Oswald cartoons during 1927 and he made 17 Oswald cartoons in 1928. In the later part of 1928 up until 1951, the Oswald cartoons were not made by Disney and that accounted for the bulk of the Oswald cartoon franchise. The later Oswald cartoons were far superior because cartoon technology had improved and great animators such as Tex Avery worked on the Oswald cartoons. The Disney Oswald is really only relevant for historical reference as there was nothing really special or great about that character, save for one thing. He became Mickey Mouse.

Yes, they can use the "Disney version" of Oswald.
