Why no employee beards?

A rule from Walt himself. He felt that it did not look professional for a man to have a beard. Any more of a definitive answer would have to come from him.

Not definitive, but my understanding is Walt didn't like beards because they were often unkempt. The "Disney Look" has been an employment requirement ever since.

Until fairly recently, mustaches were also forbidden for front line CMs. Despite the fact that Walt himself had one.

(Imagineers...they can look however they want.)

I'm wondering if it was because of a certain person Walt disliked or had bad dealings with. Seems an odd mandate. I don't know of any other companies with such a policy these days.
Nah.
It's just that back in the '50s, when the whole thing started, beards weren't common at all. Mostly the only men that had them were those that couldn't afford to shave every day. It had a bit of a stigma of a "ruffian" or low-class about it.
That has since changed, of course, but the "Disney Look" appearance standards have been maintained for front line CMs in order to help set them appart from the workers at amusement parks like Six-Flags.

I worked for AMC Theatres for a while and while beards and mustaches were not outright banned for male employees, they could not be in the process of growing one while working. If they went on vacation and came back with one, then it was fine but they couldn't be 'growing' it while they worked. Management said it looked untidy.

Mustaches, yes, though they have to be grown either on vacation or prior to employment. Beards are only allowed with proper authorization in a limited number of roles that have zero Guest contact. As Lee said, these only apply to Parks and Resorts CM's--Imagineers are exempt.

Six Flags has the same clean grooming policy. No facial hair is allowed there either. I worked there part time a few years ago on a summer break as an EMT and my boss gave me a talking to when I went a day without shaving.

Odd...I've seen some questionable grooming at Six-Flags....
(I didn't really mean to pick on Six-Flags..I like them. But, in general, non-Disney/Uni parks have much lower appearance standards.)

Facial Hair

  • For all male Cast Members, mustaches are permitted, but must be neatly trimmed and not present a bushy or unkempt appearance.
  • Mustaches must not extend onto or over the upper lip and must extend to the corners of the mouth, but not beyond or below the corners.
  • Aside from mustaches, Cast Members are expected to be clean-shaven every day. Beards, goatees and any extreme mustache styles are prohibited.
  • Mustaches must be fully grown on the Cast Member's hire date or must be fully grown during vacation or other non-working periods. No exceptions.
They even have little sketches.

Here's my beard.
Ain't it wierd?
Don't be sceered,
Just a beard.

I'm aware some stare at my hair.
In fact, to be fair,
Some really despair of my hair.
But I don't care,
Cause they're not aware,
Nor are they devonaire.
In fact, they're just square.

They see hair down to there,
Say, "Beware" and go off on a tear!
I say, "No fair!"
A head that's bare is really nowhere.
So be like a bear, be fair with your hair!
Show it you care.
Wear it to there.
Or to there.
Or to there, if you dare!

My wife bought some hair at a fair, to use as a spare.
Did I care?
Au contraire!
Spare hair is fair!
In fact, hair can be rare.
Fred Astair got no hair,
Nor does a chair,
Nor nor a chocolate eclair,
And where is the hair on a pear?
Nowhere, mon frere!

So now that I've shared this affair of the hair,
I'm going to repair to my lair and use Nair, do you care?

Ah, Good 'ol George. Allways topical
