Why doesn't Disney just pay up for HP?

The Poseidon's Fury structure is one of the coolest looking things I have EVER seen in a theme park. Anywhere.

And I don't think the themeing for DD is cheesy at all!

the souveneirs are - but yes the ride isnt at all. I thought it was er kinda cool

I heard Rowling wanted the little town Harry visits in the first book and insisted that you enter through the pub like in the book. Disney had a hard time figuring out how that would work and decided to let it go.
Kong was replaced by The Mummy, which imo puts RNRC to shame. Ghostbusters was replaced by Twister, which is almost enjoyable. And BTTF has been shut down and is being replaced by a Simpsons attraction of some sort.

Men In Black and The Mummy are definitely reasons to head to USO, and along with the Shrek movie and the future Simpsons attraction, make that park a decent half-day experience.

But only for half a day

I heard they were taking out BTTF but they took out Ghostbusters too? Well, they just took out the only two reasons i'd go to UNO. If it wasn't for Spider-Man, Dr. Seuss, and the upcoming Harry Potter land in Islands of Adventures, i'd have no reason to visit Universal at all

Why doesn't John Lennon release another solo album? Come on, it's been like forever! What's up, John, Yoko won't give you the minor keys on the piano? You don't need 'em, you're a musical genius! Come on, write something! Chop chop!

It actually might have made more sense if Six Flags would have gotten the rights as Six Flags and Warner Bros have had a relationship for years and Wb distributes the HP movies. However, if you wanted Harry to be done right, you need to go to the big guns like Universal or Disney.

And the question remains...if you've spent billions to open a Harry Potter park and Harry's popularity flags (as it most likely will in a few years) what do you do with that park? HP is not going to stay the phenonmenon that it currently is. Perhaps disney had some long term plan in site when deciding/not deciding to affiliate with HP. As far as we know, HP is just a flash in the pan short term fad. HPs success is more in the marketing than in the actual story...

Finding Nemo's been over for years, and yet Disney still makes rides based on that. Star Wars has also been over, and Disney has Star Tours. Most of the rides Disney has are based on movies that are over, and yet they still have those rides anyway. If Disney can have rides based on those things which are over, then why can't Universal have some for Harry Potter, just because it will end soon?

The Harry Poter series makes for some good books and movies but what could you actually do with it for rides in a theme park?
Seems like it could likely come off as a dull version of Mickey's Toon Town rather than a thrilling experience.

So you walk through the Harry Poter village and through HogWarts but then what? Do you ride a broom or do a Buzz LightYear type ride where you shoot bad wizards with automatic wands?
Universal may wind up with a dud if they are not careful.

IMHO

Hmmm, I think judgement on the Harry Potter thing should wait till after this weekend. IF (and I have NO more idea than anyone else) JKR kills off Harry then his and his world's popularity may take a hit. If he ends up a tragic figure then a HP type park might not look so attractive.

wondering with the rest of you...

I think Harry Potter will be great for IOA - it hasn't really moved forward since opening but I'm convinced they will do an excellent job. I look forward to visiting it.

I think ultimately, Universal felt they needed the HP franchise more than Disney did and were therefore more likely to agree to Rowlings requirements. Its fair enough that she defends something she devoted so much time to - we don't criticise Lucas for his involvement in Star Wars, do we.

I think the main stumbling block was around the fact that Rowling wanted a whole immersive experience, which, ironically enough, Disney wern't willing to agree to. She wanted to actually get a Hogwarts Castle and Hogsmeade Village with associated rides, and to be honest, I can't really see where in the Disney parks such a large scale land might have been possible and affordable.

1 - I agree, Universal needed a boost and HP will do just that. Disney doesnt need HP, they have so many IPs to take from they didnt need to deal with the reported HP demands. I am not a Potter fan so for me this makes little difference. I wont be heading over to Universal just to see this.

2 - I wouldnt say that, I am a HUGE star wars fan and I am very critical of Lucas as are a lot of people I know who are fans. Just look at the fan reaction to EP I II & III. Why do you think Jar Jar wasnt really in 2 & 3.
