Why does Disney use those "locking" DVD cases?

Why does Disney use those "locking" DVD cases? All my more recent Disney DVDs like National Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Cars, The Chronciles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and The Incredibles all have those two locking tabs.

What is the purpose of them? Are they supposed to prevent other people from using your DVD? DVDs don't just pop open, so what's the point?

Every time I go to open those cases, I forget they have the locks, and I pull so hard trying to open them, I almost break them, until I realize I have to unlock the case first.

What do you all think? :veryconfu

I think they probably got a good deal on them from some industrial designer.

Or maybe they were designed by an industrial engineer who is now an Imagineer, so therefore his design, by default belongs to Disney.

Maybe so it will be harder for someone to steal them from you...because by the time they realize that they have a lock on it ..it will be too late and you will walk in and catch them trying to steal it.:lookaroun

No..I really do not know either..good question though..:)

I think they are there to stop little one's opening their favorite movie rather than Momie and Daddy. It really annoys me when my 3 year old tries to put the DVD on himself!!!

Must be an American thing - they are standard DVD cases here - though they do have the plastic slot containing a security device that the store has to remove, otherwise the disc will be broken when you try to open it.

My DH was just talking about DVD cases last weekend. He said that a lot of companies repackaged their DVDs because people were able to put a slit in the bottom of the case and slide the DVD out. I guess that some people were doing this to steal DVDs from the store while others waited until they got home, cut open the case, copied the DVD, put the DVD back in, and returned it to the store. I forget exactly which was the new packaging and which was the old, but maybe I helped out a little :D

They are to stop shoplifters, Disney is not the only Studio that does it either.

I always rip them off after I open the DVD so I don't have to worry about them again.
