Giving somoene the middle finger isnt originally an American insult. It startred long ago in Europe. When archers were caught by rival towns, factions, or whomever, They would chop off their middle fingers so they can never shoot a bow again. So by giving someone "the finger" they were showing that they still had them and were ready to use them.
I'm pretty sure that is an myth, but you're right that it originate in Europe (Greek I think).
Everyone finds different things offensive, and I'm sure CMs are taught to point like this just to avoid causing offence to people, it's not worth the problems.
I think I heard somewhere that in the Middle East a thumbs up symbol is similar to giving the finger, so it's all down to interpretation I suppose.
