Long story short, Disney had a 20 year contract with MGM, that contract ended and Disney and MGM didn't renew. Because the contract ran out Disney had to change the name. They decided on Disney's Hollywood Studios.

I prefer Disney Studios, because i don't see whats very hollywood about it. ok i do lol.

But how come Great Movie Ride is still there? Its MGM Themed.

Warner Bros-
Footlight Parade, Public Enemy, Casablanca

Formerly MGM but now owned by Warner Bros-
Singin' in the Rain, Wizard of Oz, Tarzan

Paramount-
Raiders of the Lost Ark

20th Century Fox-
Alien

Walt Disney Pictures-
Mary Poppins, Fantasia

MGM don't have anything in the ride anymore.

The rights to those movies aren't tied up with the naming of the parks right. They each have individual contracts for the scenes.

A side note, I think most of the movies featured are now owned by WB, Disney, Paramount and Fox, not MGM. Someone correct me if I am wrong though.

Edit: Fun2BFree beat me to it!

Yeah, I actually would have preferred the "Studios" be left out, since there's really not much left that's pretending to be a studio. "Disney's Hollywood" would be a great name.

Actually very few of the movies featured in TGMR were MGM movies. Foot light parade and Casablanca were Warner Brothers, Indiana Jones was Lucas Film, Alien was 20th century Fox, Fantasia was Disney and so on. The only movie that comes to mind that was done by MGM was the Wizard of Oz and the rights to it have been owned by Turner Broadcasting since before MGM studios opened in 1989.

Why Disney's Hollywood Studios?
Easy.

That will make the transition easier in a few years when they go ahead and drop the Studios part. There is very little "studio" left about the park, as we all know.
So, give it a few years and it will likely just be "Disney's Hollywood" park.

As for Disney-Pixar Studios...I hear a flannel-wearing, bearded, film-type guy didn't like that idea, seeing how his films already have a large presence in the park, and will likely grow in the future. Adios Disney-Anything Studios.

I am not sure they will drop the "Studios" part (although I have heard that rumor) especially if they divide the park up into lands (studios).

I have heard that DCA could be renamed Disney's California because the park will reflect the Hollywood of the 20's and 30's that Walt Disney would have experienced when he moved there. It's a great way to knit the park together to tell a story. As for Carsland, I think it works at the "new" park because it is the culmination of Walt's vision for the future of Disney attractions.
At DHS however, I think they may go with the Hollywood of the 40's and 50's for the front of the park and the "studios" will be seperate lands in the back of the park. It seems to me that George Lucas (Walts "heir apparent" IMO), Jim Henson (obviously a Walt protege) and Pixar (spin off from Lucas) all should have a prominent place in a park called Disney's Hollywood Studios. Of course it would still work even if they dropped the "Studios" moniker so you are probably right anyway

here is the real question...why is this not in the discussion section?? haha

If it every became...Disney-Pixar studios it would fit with its theme...it would fit only in the theme of movies and animation. Where as Disney's Hollywood studios fits in with all parts of hollywood : music, movies, TV, radio, and theater (did I leave one out).... cough cough its were showbiz lives:lookaroun even if its not used as a real studio any more (they did do some filming there for 50th celebration ads, I remember seeing a soarin' chair lift thing on a truck back stage. It just wasn't open for the public to see it was in the studio next or behind Millionaire, which as a guest without my nametag on...I don't care that its not used for filming anymore or that I don't see it, I go for the feeling that I'm in a studio just like I go to LS to feel like I'm actually in the old revolutionary days!)
