Why are rooms with king beds more costly?

Why are rooms that have king sized beds more expensive than the standard rooms with two double beds at the value and moderate resorts? I know this isn't a concern at the deluxe resorts that offer queen beds.

It's only a separate paid room category at the moderate resorts. You can only request a king at the values and deluxes, but you can pay for them at the moderates.

Its the same reason that you pay for bunk beds at WL and AKL - people want to be able to guarantee that request - and are willing to pay extra to guarantee that request - rather than fighting about it when they check in.

Exactly. We always pay extra for king beds.
I like knowing thats what I'll get for the extra cash and if I don't Disney would compensate for it.

My husband and I are going to DW in April. Do you mean if I request a King size bed, we'll be charged extra? Is that considered a preferred room? Even if I request a room at Pop Century in the 70's building for a king bed?

At Pop Century a room with two double beds and a room with a king bed are the same price.
There is a price difference based on location- preferred location versus a non-preferred location.

No, but your request is just a request - you may or may not get it.

At the moderates, the King Bed room is a separate paid category - you pay for it, and 99% of the time, you get it.....

Simply put, they are more expensive because people are willing to pay more for them.

Then king beds would be more expensive at the Pop. That is not the case. The only resonable reason that I can think is that the king beds at the other resorts are also in preferred locations. Can anyone verify that?

It's not an option to pay more for them at the value or the deluxes - its the luck of the draw - you make a request, you may or may not get that request.

It IS an option to pay for them at the moderates - and people do. Many are in corner rooms and have 2 windows, but not all.

A few years ago, the bunk beds at WL and AKL were not a separate paid category - you could make a request, but there was no guarantee that you would get them - and people made the request, and at check in, were furious when then didn't get their bunk bed. The same for Magic Kingdom View at the monorail resorts.

THEN Disney saw the light, and realized that it could make more money by making these former requests a separate paid room category - in other words, (almost) guaranteeing your request by having you pay more money.

Many of the king bed rooms at deluxes and values are handicapped accessible and are probably reserved for those who need it.

JP Von Drake may be able to state this better than I when he checks in.

As others have said, it is b/c they can get the extra money for them. It only makes sense for them to charge the extra money for the room if people are willing to pay for them.

Why they don't charge for them at the values and deluxe resorts - only Disney knows....

It might have to do with all the king size rooms being handicap accessible at the values. I do not know if the size would be an issue or not, but the value rooms are smaller than the mods and deluxe levels. If they have to provide a certain amount of space b/c of AD guidelines, the values with double beds might not work. Assuming this, I doubt Disney could charge someone with a disability more for a room just b/c they need the space. That is just a guess though.

We always stay at Port Orleans French Quarter and request a room with a king size bed. We get a corner room and it has always had a beautiful water and courtyard view everytime. If we are going to be sleeping there for 7+ days we don't mind paying for the extra comfort.

DisneyJoe is 100% correct.

Nope.

CBR is the only Moderate that has a preferred location room category. The preferred location rooms are NOT king-size bed rooms, although there are a few that have king-size beds (because they are pretty much randomly sprinkled throughout the resort ... there is not a village or building or section of CBR where all or even most of the rooms have king-size beds). At CBR you can also book a water view room, but again, these are NOT king-size bed rooms (same explanation as for preferred location).

At CSR, POR and POFQ there is no such thing as preferred location. They all have a water view category, but the same idea applies there as at CBR (written above).

Interestingly, at the moderates, you can't pay for and reserve any more than one "upcharge" room category. In other words, you can't guarantee youself a water view room with a king-size bed, you can't guarantee yourself a king-size bed in a preferred location room, etc. You have to choose the ONE that's the most important to you, book and pay for that room category, and then merely request anything else. At CBR, there are a very small handful of king-size bed rooms with water views in preferred location buildings ... the people who lucked into those rooms should consider themselves doused with pixie dust, and if any of those people ALSO won Dream FASTPASSes or anything else like that I'd just have to scream about them getting ALL the luck.:ROFLOL:
