Whispering Canyon (dinner)

We're staying at WL for 3 nights in August and I've got a dinner ADR at WC for night 2. Breakfast and lunch aren't possible because I've top-loaded the first few days of our (split) stay with park time.

I booked it mainly for the fun factor. I think my 4 year old is going to see/hear the fun going on and beg me to eat there, so I feel like I need to have this ADR.

But the menu really doesn't do much for me. (My son will just eat whatever form of potato they have and call it a day, so his food preferences are not a factor). I keep thinking that there's 10 other places I'd rather try for dinner besides WC. This is the one ADR I keep re-thinking. Anyone have any recent reviews that can help me get excited about it?

I have never been - but I have read its unlimited milk shakes? That may be fun. I agree on the menu - it does not look that great but I am not too excited over rustic type food. But if its something that you really want to try - go for it

That's my thing... If I wasn't staying at WL, I'd probably never try to eat there. And that's why I keep re-thinking it; WDW trips are too short to be eating at places you don't like!! :)

Isn't that the place that's supposed to have really good fried chicken, or something like that? Maybe I'm thinking of somewhere else.

I have no clue. I haven't heard of anything really good there (besides milkshakes, which you can get at
other places). That's what I'm looking for...something everyone says you have to try the...so I can settle down and look forward to it!

I think that is Trail's End (shared with Hoop De Doo). I originally thought that was Whispering Canyon as well - then I looked at their menu and was not excited. But Trail's End menu looks amazing - load me up on fried chicken and comfort foods :)

Lol... yep that's what I was thinking. Right down to the "shared with Hoop De Doo." Oops.

I have heard people say they enjoy WCC, though, but never anything more specific. Hmm...

Funny you mentioned this--Trail's End looks SO GOOD. I could totally get excited about that...but not about getting there and back, which sounds like a hassle, even from WL. That's the only reason we're not doing it!!

Lol...exactly. :D

I would say give WC a try. There menu confuses me though because I see they have the all you care skillet mixed with entrees - that is too confusing for me, lol. But if your family likes ribs and veggies it should not be a problem. I do not think transportation from WL to FW is too bad - its just the boat and ive read the boat drops off near the restaurant. For my August trip - I am stepping outside my comfort zone. Normally I eat burgers and chicken nuggets everyday. This trip I am making a point to step outside and try other things :)

You sound just like me! DH makes fun of me and says that I only eat chicken nuggets and pizza lol... it would be funnier if it wasn't damn near accurate. In all fairness, my weight loss journey has opened my eyes to the wonderful world that includes steak, different ways of cooking shrimp (besides the popcorn variety) and the occasional veggie. Yes, I said it... occasional lol.

I think the next time I go to WDW I'll be doing the same thing; stepping outside of my comfort zone when it comes to food. I have been inspired lol. ;)

Getting from WL to Trail's End is easy! There is a boat that travels from WL directly to Ft. Wilderness. There is also an internal bus from WL to Ft. Wilderness. Then it is just a short walk to Trail's End, from either the boat dock or bus stop.

When we stay at WL, we no longer eat at WCC anymore but make the trip to Trail's End. The food is better and cheaper.

Your son will only hear the shenanigans from WCC if you walk past the restaurant in/out the front door (which is not the door you use for the buses.) Even if your room is above the restaurant, the noise should not be a big factor since the staff has been told to tone it down in recent years. You said you would be gone over the breakfast and lunch times, so if you make ADRs outside the resort at dinner times I doubt your 4 year old would even realize what is going on inside.

Disney meals are expensive and if you just feel "meh" about the menu then you should eat elsewhere.

We went there two years ago and they would only let us order the skillet - which I thought was odd. They said it was a new change to the menu. There were 4 adults and 3 kids so we originally thought we'd do a skillet or two and some other things off the menu. The food was ok but it ended up costing us a lot more than originally planned. My daughter was 4 and didn't quite enjoy the shenanigans like I thought she would. My boys were 18 months so they had no idea what was going on. She did get a milkshake which she enjoyed. I got a pomegranate lemonade - my refill came in a GIANT mason jar. The kids got a kick out of that. Prob won't head back there until they are much much older.

They used to have a great menu with a fantastic vegetarian enchilada (and I'm not even a vegetarian), before they switched to the all you can eat. I don't especially like "comfort" foods, so the menu is just OK for me. The service is still the same, and there are a lot of surprises with your meal (get drink refills and ketchup). Every time I have been there, the waiters lead the kids in a gallop around the restaurant, which could be fun for your son. That's about all I have to get you excited. It's not a bad place to eat, but it isn't my favorite either.

We went to Trail's End for the first time in Dec and we took the boat from Mk to get there. We already knew we loved the boats, but I had no idea how close to the dock Trail's End was located (it was just a short walk up to the Trading Post building where it's located). Just my opinion - but taking a boat from WL to Ft Wilderness is pretty quick and fun, and the only hassle we had was that it was a busy night, there were 11 of us, and we had to keep hungry impatient kids occupied while we waited to be called (and there were CM's playing games to help with that). To be fair though, we always check in on the early side for an ADR, so unless we are seated early, we always have some kind of wait. Once seated, we had a great server and thoroughly enjoyed our meal :hungry:

They did have a menu change a while back, but it must not have been that popular because they have already changed it back to more like it was. You have a good point about waiting to go back until your kids are a little older and will enjoy it more :) ....unless you just want another pomegranate lemonade sooner ;)

The lunch menu is a little different, plus it's "quieter" if you want a nice mid-day break near the MK but aren't interested in the shenanigans.

When we stayed at WL and other times we've been in the lobby, I have mainly noticed "noise" from WC, not really anything specific that made me think something fun was going on. It is several steps up from the main lobby floor, with just a railing separating it, but that is only on one side of the restaurant, the rest has normal walls - and the lobby is so big and open with such a high ceiling that, to me, the restaurant is "just over there on the side"....so your son may not notice it that much.....of course I'm not an observant 4 yr old ;) but he would still just see people seated at tables, when looking from out in the lobby.

Thanks for all the great responses!

Yup, I just feel meh about it. The menu at WC reminds me of the menu at Famous Dave's (anyone have those nearby)...and that's my least favorite chain in the world.

Long as I can keep the 4yo from feeling like he's missing out--and now I think that's doable--I'm going to cancel this ADR...and probably shift things around and replace it with Trail's End! Idk why, but I had it in my head that we'd have to take an internal Fort Wilderness bus from the boat dock. I'm glad it's easier than that.

Can anyone give me an idea of about how long it takes to get to Trail's End by boat from WL, and from Trail's End to MK by boat afterwards? Not counting the time we spend waiting for the boats, of course.

Plan on a half hour tops ~ that includes waiting for the boat, riding to Ft. Wilderness and the brief walk from boat dock to Trail's End. If you don't have to wait for a boat it will be even shorter.

If you decide to ride the bus from WL, the bus ride to the Outpost is 3 minutes (I have timed it, haha). So possibly even faster than boat.

Figure 45 minutes from Ft. Wilderness boat dock to MK (includes the wait. ) Will likely be much less. It is a direct ride.

Yay for trails end! It will be my first time in August and am excited about it. Fried chicken, mac and cheese, cobbler, ice cream, is all I need. The price is amazing and I like the Ap discount. I am also excited because it gets me out to a resort area I normally would never go to. And I've been to famous daves, yuck.
