Whirlygigs Depart Epcot

I liked these, but I do see how it made the plaza look cluttered. I wouldn't mind seeing these installed on the East and West sides of Future World instead.

I think they could work at the Contemorary resort as part of a sculpture garden or along a walkway. DTD might also work as a good location. They are not terrible but they just add too much clutter to the plaza that is overflowing with clutter.

Wasn't something big supposed to happen at EPCOT sometime soon?

I recall a poster, Raven if I'm not mistaken. They said that something was gonna happen to EPCOT that we will dislike because it would ruin the skyline or something along those lines.

Can someone please update me as to what's going on with EPCOT? So they removed the spinny whirligigs for what reason? Will they be replaced by something? And what's this talk about tarps?

Thanks in advance!

Can we please stop calling it CommuniCore Plaza? CommuniCore has been gone for 17 years. I believe Considering Innoventions has been here 5 years longer than CommuniCore, can we please call it Innoventions Plaza?

Nope, they can change the name but it's still CommuniCore. I have family members that still refer to Test Track as "The World of Motion".

There was nothing difinitive about any plans to redo the entrance plaza or Innoventions area. All that was said is that there were plans but no timeframe on if/when they would or could be implemented. I also beleive that raven said it was one of multiple plans that was being looked at, though I could be wrong.

As far as the current work in the Innoventions area, I don;t think anyone really knows what is going on. We've seen this kind of piecemeal approach for the past 3 years or so starting with new Innoventions signs and the coloring of Innoventions to blue and green. From there its been new FoN lights, new FoN railings, new breezeway pavement, new directional signs, and now new plaza pavement with the removal of the whirly gig things.

So who knows what is next.

I'm surprised they haven't removed the tarps since they did all of that work on the pavement. Anyone know if they're going soon?

Don't forget the painting of SSE's legs and restoring the original paint to UoE. :)

I was only referencing work that has taken place in the Innoventions area but you are correct that the repainting of the SSE legs and return of the old UoE colors are further signs that Epcot is slowly moving away from the 90's colors and additions.

I'm sad to see the whirlygigs go. I liked the energy they added to the area. However, I won't cast aspersions on any effort by Disney to improve the aesthetics in the parks until I've seen the final results. On the contrary, the possibilities for the area are exciting.

One interesting idea I have that would be the best of both worlds is a combination of the whirlygigs with water features and greenery.

I. . . actually really liked the whirlygigs.

And no I am not a doom and gloomer. And I don't think this is doom and gloom. I just liked them and I'll mess them.

Oh well.

I liked them. They reminded me of the huge thing that Walt had built outside of It's a Small World at the Worlds Fair.

(Come to think of it, that in and of itself might be a cool addition to the Imagination pavilion)

I too liked the whirlygigs. I like your idea! That would be awesome!

I also liked the energy and motion they brought to the area, but in my opinion there was nothing in the current FW plaza that screamed 90's more than the whirlygigs. They are a bit dated so I see there removal as an improvement. However, I would like to see some sort of modern improvment that would add motion to the area since the whirlygigs are now gone. I will miss them in a nostalgic sense, but they are dated and I can understand if they never come back.

And then there were none!

Another legacy of the milleium adds is history.....finally! They were fun as a temporary add but they were one of those adds from that era which just became more annoying with each passing year. :hammer:

Now some doom and gloomers claim this costs Communicore Plaza some of its kinetic energy. But that is just nonsensical political spin.:lookaroun:lol: If there is one thing CP does not lack it is 'kinetic energy'!

Future World should be more reflective of a corporate campus than a carnival. Period, debate over.

Good riddance whirlygigs.

Those "whirlygigs" were actually called " Kinetic Sculptures"
