Where's the big TV special?

Regis and Kelly will be there next week, May 9-May 13. They will be doing two shows from Disneyland and three shows from WDW. Got my VCR set for that too.
I wish they would do a TV special though.....they did one for WDW's 25th....and recreating the opening day is a cute idea!

My guess is that they're waiting until the summer, closer to Disneyland's actual 50th Birthday. If I recall correctly, the special for Walt Disney World's 25th didn't aire in October of 96 but some time the following Spring. But don't quote me on that.
Anyway, I think we can expect the special during the summer...along with other major promotional campaigns like a Happy Meal at McDonald's featuring fifty different toys of characters in various ride vehicles.

That would be seriously cool...but I don't eat McDonalds. Oh well, there's always Ebay!

It's not a joke. I wish I was...I remember my # of visits to McDonald's during the 100 Years of Magic promotion. I didn't even try to collect them all.
I first learned about it from a powerpoint presentation I downloaded that discusses the celebration and the marketing campaign behind it. If I can ever remember where I found that, I'll post a link.
But below is a press release that talks about the toy promotions with McDonald's and Kellogg.
This doesn't mention what the toys will be, but the presentation I read did. Course, it's all subject to change.
What's also really neat is Disney is also planning a "virtual theme park" like Sim City to be released as well.

The Walt Disney Co. on Monday announced promotional alliances with media and food-service companies valued at $150 million as part of the marketing hoopla for Disneyland's 50th anniversary.
The Burbank-based company will launch its "Happiest Celebration on Earth" anniversary package May 5, tapping cross-promotional relationships with Clear Channel Communications, The Coca-Cola Co., Kellogg and McDonald's.
"It's the biggest marketing campaign in terms of scale," James Rizolo, president of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said Monday at an investors conference in Orlando, Fla. "This celebration fits into our growth strategy and ... is a powerful call to action for families."
Unlike past anniversary celebrations, Disney executives are thinking global, with marketing efforts specifically directed toward Asian and European consumers. As for local consumers, Disneyland plans to open a new ride, Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters, and reopen its famed Tomorrowland roller coaster, Space Mountain.
"Disney is at an inflection point right now with all of the management changes going on. But there is still a very nostalgic feel to the company, and I'm sure it will be part of their 50th anniversary marketing blitz," said George Geis, an adjunct professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, Anderson School of Management.
Disneyland spots are expected to run on several hundred radio stations worldwide, while McDonald's and Kellogg plan to include Disney-themed toys with their products.
Disney also plans to target preteens and teens by launching an Internet-based game that is similar to "Sim City." Rizolo said the game will allow this demographic to create its own "personal Magic Kingdom."
Disney is looking for "a lasting emotional connection," he said. And it hopes to show families the "relevance of the brand by focusing the spotlight on the brand."

Everyone is bummed out that there is no special... they should have realized that was going to happen!
I mean come on.. I have a recording of the 35th on tape.. you'de think they would do the 50th! Where's their priorities? :lol:
It could be later this year, but I doubt it. All the other big events are yesterday and today.

The McDonald's and Kellogg toys will have to do in terms of making up for no tv special. I can't wait to start collecting upc's and checking ebay for happy meal toys!

We did that during the 100 years of Magic to get the characters. I think the toys are usually around $2. That is what I am going to do as you can only eat so much McDs.

I know! I thought even on the Travel Channel that they would be running those Disney "behind the scenes" shows all day, I was bummed to see that only one was on.
McDonalds tip...make friends with someone who works there. I have a friend who is a manager at one and he was able to get me all the glasses (which I collect) for the 100th...I was so greatful!

So true! I was able to get a manager to open up boxes of toys not released yet, but at the store. I also was allowed to go through their cart of toys to find ones I didn't have yet.
I hope the new toys aren't in a bag that you can't tell what toy it is. You have to stretch the bag a little and feel the toy good to know what it is.

On the homepage for this site, under May 5th there is a heading that says "Ashanti Performs at the Magic Kingdom"
When you click on it, it says, and I quote, "Singer/actress Ashanti performs during a television taping today at the Magic Kingdom in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. during the kickoff of the "Happiest Celebration on Earth" at Walt Disney World Resort."
It says "during a television taping".....does that mean we'll be getting a tv special?

Actually, there was coverage of the opening ceremony on KTLA. For whatever reason, my college gets that channel, even though I go to college in NW Ohio. It was kind of cool. They had Bob Iger, Art Linkletter, Michael Eisner, and Julie Andrews speak. LeeAnne Rines sang the 50th theme song. Then, they did a live re-creation of the teaser commercial from the Rose Bowl parade, complete with motorcycle riding Stitch! The castle wasn't completely covered with a tarp, only the center part with the 50th emblem. I actually think the design of the castle overlay isn't nearly as gaudy as everyone feared--it looks pretty decent. Hopefully, a tape of the ceremony will surface somewhere.
