Where would you go if you need a Doctor?

Ok, strange as it is I've been thinking about what would happen if I needed a doctor while staying at disney resort. Where would you go if you needed a doctor, but it wasn't a dire emergency (so you wouldn't need an ambulance). Would the front desk arrange transportation or would ya have to get a taxi?

There is a service...oh my gosh, what is it called??? It's on the tip of my tongue from when I worked front desk. Cripes!!! Well anyways. They have a shuttle that can pick you up at the resorts, take you there and then bring you back. It's usually faster to take a cab though. Celebration Hospital is also close enough to take a cab too. Ambula...Central...Swimmy...Swammy...Centra Care? Did I make that up?? Someone help me!!

Hotel room (house) calls

There are also doctors that will come right to your room. The front desk has a list of them, we used one a few years back. Quite pricey though.

This happens often (more then anyone wants to think about)

Dec 2001 our 9 month old DD had an allergic reaction to penicilin (she started it before the trip) and really swelled up. She could breath ok, but given her age and the recation we wanted her seen. We talked to our Ped on the phone and talked with the frount destk at the Poly (were we were staying)

They were very helpful. There are 2 good options. One is have a Dr. sent to your room. (more coslty) the other is go to a walk in clinic called Centra Care. Centra care sends a van to you (no cost, with car seat if needed.) The whole trip cost around 120 (with meds) Our insurnce didn't pay for it (I don't think they take insurance, but does give paper work if you want to sumit it later.)

The other option is to call your insurnce and see who they will pay for.

We ended up back at Centra care the next year. Ear infection. Happy to know they were there. The clinic was much less busy on a Sunday morning then a Monday afternoon.

Good to know they are there, and they took good care of us.

I took my husband to Celebration Hosp. when his tow was broken by a crazy lady with an 8 year old child in a stroller. She ran right over his sandal clad foot! Needless to say my husband will never wear sandals to MK again!
We can laugh about it now because he is better and the lady was caught by security. (we were standing in the MK chatting with a friend of mine who works for Disney and he saw the who thing and radioed ahead to security at the front gate. The lady said she didn't know what they were talking about and that this was harrassment! Security filed a report for us and we went on to the ER in celebration. The best part(or the worst part for them) was that they were in our resort! Her husband found out and wrote us a check for the amount that our ER visit was without us even asking or anything!) So in closing, the hosp. in Celebration is very nice!

Outside the park, there is a clinic (of which I have become closely acquainted over the years from sunburn problems). It's across from Steak n' Shake (maybe not directly, but across the road from it...). It has very good doctors, from what I remember. If you mean an actual emergency, though, Celebration Hospital is your best bet.

I took my daughter to Centra Care in December. I waited about an hour, but they were very friendly. Best of all, they accepted my insurance so I didn't pay a penny!

I went to centra care once. They sent out the van to pick us up. I had to wait a long time in the office though, aparently I was there around lunch time and all the doctors were out.

On the bright side I got a bunch of stickers, even though they are intended for kids.

My brother in law developed appendicitis while at Disney two years back. He was at EPCOT and started to complain of abdominal pain. Of course, he was ignored as he normally does not like EPCOT and everyone just thought he was trying to get out of spending time with the family in the park. By the next day he was quite sick and by the time he went to Celebration Hospital he had a rip roaring ruptured appendix.

He ended up doing well and had nothing but great things to say about the hospital and staff. Needless to say, the episode only increased his dislike of EPCOT.

A few years ago, Dec. of 1998, my brother fell as he was running to try to catch another ride on Splash before the park closed. He hit a wet spot not far from the place where you first see your pics from Splash. He jumped up and the whole group made it in line to get the ride. Afterwards they started the walk to the front gate to exit the park. He realized that something was wrong when he couldn't straighten out his arm. They stopped at the first aid office which had just closed so they walked back to the Contemporary where they were staying. The pain was getting worse so they called the front desk which advised him to go to Centra Care but they would have to cab it since it was too late for the shuttle bus. When he got to Centra Care, it was closed with just a couple people standing outside waiting for rides. The cab driver then took him to the Sand Lake (I think) hospital where he was x-rayed and diagnosed with a broken arm. The hospital called a cab and as it turned out, the same cabbie picked him up and took him to a drug store for a prescription and waited to return him to the hotel. The cab driver was a big help to him. Oh yeah, did I mention that he was 35 at the time of him running to ride Splash again? In July of 2004 we had to get my niece to the Celebration Hospital for a sprained ankle. Again an injury that occurred late at night after Centra Care was closed. They were great there as was the cab who brought us back to the Contemporary when done. I see a common thread now, whenever we stay at the Contemporary, somebody visits the ER. Maybe we need to stop staying there.

Heard as you exit the Monorail: "Please watch your headnstep." What exactly is a headnstep?

hehe, completely unrelated, but when we went to WDW this December, all I could think on the monorail exit was "what's a headnstep?"
I blame you :D

Unfortunately we had to experience a sick child at Disney. The first aid center at MK was not very helpful and didnt really seem to have a good bedside manner. My wife went back to the hotel and called the doctor to come to our room. This worked out great, other than the $200 I had to shell out because they didnt take our insurance. They took Visa though!!! Had a little machine to swipe your card and everything. I think he was in our room for an hour and we got better care out of him then we did our doctors back home. Our insurance did reimburse us when we got home. We didnt want to leave the property and waste an evening at some strange hospital. The girls got to play with their new Barbie Princesses back in the room while we waited and my wife and I a little breather. It was well worth the money after the fact. Hopefully you wont have to use the services offered.

Last April, my wife was 4 mos pregnant and was having problems at MK after Wishes and while we were waiting for the bus back to the hotel. The Disney head of Transportation came over. Arranged for transportation to the Hospital in Celebration. He gave me a number to call at Pop Century (where we were staying) and told me to call and they would pick us up (he also call the hotel to make sure they knew we would be calling). We got back to the hotel around 3am. I was told to bring the prescription to the front desk and they would arrange for it to be delievered to the hotel for us.

Disney definitely made what could of been a bad situation good and much easier to deal with.

Celebration

Our whole family got sick while on vac this year at Disney. Hopefully it was just a bug and not Disney related. We were staying at a off-site vacation home in Kissimmee (never again!), so we decided to go to Celebration hospital also. It was very nice, clean, new, etc. Nevertheless, I noticed as you walk in the ER that they had this nice large mat with a pic of the hospital printed on it (probably 7'x12'), and it had hospital spelled incorrectly. It said something like .... Florida Celebration Hodpital. Nice typo..... you'd think they would send it back or something!

When we were there in December my sister-in-law was having problems with her pregancy and my brother had to get a cab to take her to the nearest hospital. I'm surprised Disney doesn't have a little doctor's office somewhere on property.

I think it has to do with insurance and liability.
