If I had to guess, I would think that places that have an active football community also have a marching band that can entertain at halftime. I don’t know if that’s actually true, but it makes sense in my head. I love watching the performances at those parades. It’s awesome to see talent in action.@InnKpr , wanted to share that I saw the Rose Bowl parade (from Pasadena, CA) on TV today. There was an excellent (very large) high school band from Tennessee. They were excellent.I guess band is a big activity in your high schools down there.

It is in the Carolina's too. Our home town High School Band was in the Macy's parade last year. They spent two years fund raising to afford to send the entire band and instruments to NYC. Parents ended up paying at least 2/3rds of it as well.@InnKpr , wanted to share that I saw the Rose Bowl parade (from Pasadena, CA) on TV today. There was an excellent (very large) high school band from Tennessee. They were excellent.

Back to work tomorrow. I'm waking up early so I can go in early and get some things done.
Tomorrow starts off my least favorite part of the year: January, February, and March. No breaks. Bad weather. Lots of indoor recess. Little sunshine.
The last week of March is spring break, and then after that the end of the year gets super busy and things start to fly by. This part of the year tends to drag on, though.

I am back to school/work tomorrow too. I agree it is the tough part of the year as it seems to drag. Luckily our spring break is in the first part of March this year so that will get me through. Actually Sunday is fast pass day!

Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen. Window table, facing the fountain. Our server’s name was Kandice. She was absolutely awesome. I am a miserly tipper generally, but I happily left 30% for her. She was friendly, efficient, and our drink glasses were never empty. I also left my praises with the host as we left.
$22.99/person and you choose 3 mains and 4 sides, all served family style. Everything was very good, but some dishes were outstanding.
Mike had 3 strawberry lemonade. I had 2 peach tea (half strength) plus a water.
This is literally the only thing that didn’t get eaten. These were straight from the oven, and were so fresh and break-apart that I ate mine with a fork.
Forefront - catfish with tartar sauce - A.
Mike likes fish more than me so I’m sure he would score it even higher. He ordered refills of this.
Clockwise from the top: Mashed potatoes - skin on. Not quite hot enough - A-.
Chicken dumpling gravy - A ... once you picked past the dumplings.
Pot roast with rice. The weakest of the mains. Still good - a solid B.
Corn pudding - the weakest of the sides. I wouldn’t order it again, but Mike liked it. B-.
Broccoli casserole - A+
Fried chicken - A++!
Salad. I ate the WHOLE bowl. Kandice brought more. I decided to share with Mike this time, so she brought him tomatoes and croutons on the side.
My first plate. I did eat a whole lot more salad and and a forkful of pot roast.
Dessert is still in the fridge. Let’s call it breakfast.

I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t tough it out at Dollywood, but I was nearly in tears at one point, so there was no point in pushing on. We both enjoyed the time there; it is a beautiful park.
We rode a few rides, bought some tree ornaments at 50% off, had coffee with a good friend, and a delicious lunch of sausage on a bun.
19,969 steps - not bad for a hip that is literally going into the trash in 33 days.
I’m still going to score it Jen - 1, hip - 0.

We need to replace the retaining wall beside our driveway in the next couple of years. I like this concept. We’d only need to go three or four levels high.

I liked Dollywood to a degree. I went just before Christmas in 2011. Back then I could walk all day but still had problems on some of the hills. If I were do go today I would not hesitate to get a scooter. Pain is no good at anytime, but when you are trying to enjoy yourself, it is an unnecessary encumbrance. I am not willing to put up with it just for show. I think I rode Blazing Fury. If I am thinking of the right one it had that sudden drop that you cannot see as you approach. I hate having my heart come up and lodge in my throat. It also seemed so amateurish compared to Disney that it took away my enjoyment. The teacups and faux Dumbo ride amused me probably for the wrong reasons. Otherwise it was a fun day. The last time I was there there were signs saying that it was going to be closing from Jan. 2 to April 1st, for the annual spruce up, but it can get pretty cold up in the Smokey's so I suspect the weather has more to do with it than maintenance.

Dollywood outshines every park I've ever been to during the Chritmas season. The lights, the shows, the random live music acts throughout the park all reflect unashameably the true meaning of Christmas while welcoming people of all beliefs and experiences.
I remember that dread well at this time of year and feeling similar thoughts about the coming few months. This will be the first time in the past 30 years that we haven't spent at least a week of the season in Florida. As teachers we always had Presidents week off, so we'd rent a house with a group of family and friends and head South to soak up a little warm weather. The only year we didn't go in February was when we went to Germany. so we did Florida during April that year.

It’s different than Disney for sure - some parts are even better. The integration of nature and natural features is organic - nothing about that feels fake or forced like it can at Disney sometimes.
Blazing Fury is so hokey that it’s delightful. And I love a big drop that you can’t see coming.
The new section installed last year is definitely kid centric. Like the old Hannah-Barbera land at Canada’s Wonderland, there is probably no reason for Mike and I to hoof it over that way again next year.
I commented to Mike yesterday how beautiful and well done everything was, and he said it felt like the whole park was MK’s Frontierland. Agreed.
I hobbled around last year on what turned out to be a broken leg and torn meniscus that needed surgery. This year the hills were worse. There were surprisingly very few scooters compared to WDW. Not surprisingly, very few of those drivers knew what the heck they were doing either.
And @MinnieM123 , the religious aspects of Christmas were very much front and centre throughout the park. Dollywood doesn’t shy away from its Christian roots. It’s also a dry park, which doesn’t bother me one bit. We were offered a “blessed day” more times than I could count.

Wait a minute. You dare suggest that Dolly would sometimes make cheap knock-off's of Disney?? As a local regular visitor, I am offended... nay, I am appalled by this statement. Dollywood is it's own unique thing, and never steals pages from bigger fish. Thank you.
