Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
I took a day trip to NYC quite a few years ago now (we were staying with friends that lived in New Jersey) so we didn't have time for a lot of stuff. We did go to the top of the Empire State Building and that was pretty cool. I'm not a big fan of going to the top of buildings in cities, but this seemed like an iconic must do and I was please with the time we spent there. I also enjoyed the time we spent going through Central Park. We also just strolled around and looked at some of the "iconic" shops like Macy's and some on 5th Ave.

If I were to go back again I would go to Ellis Island (my relatives entered the country through there), 9-11 site, more time in Central Park. I would probably pick the MOMA for my museum.

It's funny that you are disappointed that there is no Billy Joel concert and you aren't Broadway people because we did a Broadway show that day and it was Movin' Out which is based on Billy Joel's music. It was a fantastic show, we walked up and got 2nd row seats super cheap.
I'm not a super Billy Joel fan; Mike is. I really only like "music", instrumentation and such. I could sit in a theatre and listen to an orchestra perform Disney BGM all day long. Mike, not so much.

Neither of us is a fan of live theatre, or shows like La Nouba. Son #1 is the theatre buff. He has seen three shows on Broadway. I also don't care for much live stand up comedy, as most of it is too raunchy for me.

I have no problem with heights. Ironically, Mike does, so I'll probably only be able to drag him to the top of one building. And I might even have to play the "birthday card" to do so.

I'll check out the various museums online. I'm leaning towards the Frick Collection if I can talk him into a second museum.

Probably going to book hotel and flights today or tomorrow. Then the real planning begins.

We got to MD yesterday with surprisingly no traffic problems at all. I We had no desire to go into DC for the fireworks but we did go over to Tacoma Park to see theirs. We could hear the Capitol ones from there too.
My daughter and her friends saw the fireworks on the Mall from pretty close up near the Washington monument. My son and I just went to the Kensington/Wheaton fireworks closer to home. They were surprisingly good.

Okay Peeps, Mike and I are getting down to the nitty gritty of planning our mid-August NYC trip.
We're looking at a morning arrival on the 14th and an evening departure on the 18th.

We've only been here once before about six years ago. Because we were travelling with a group of eight and our itinerary included a Mets game and a Rangers game, we didn't have a lot of free time.

Probably going to stay at the same hotel, although it has changed ownership since then. Used to be a Radisson, now it's a Marriot. Located on Lexington, between 47th and 48th. The location worked for us last time, walking distance to many attractions, mere blocks from Grand Central Station, or whatever they're calling it now.

We've done the Statue of Liberty tour, so this time we're good with just riding the Staten Island Ferry. We loved the hop on/hop off bus tour thing, but think we went with the wrong colour. Once I remember which company we took last time, I'll make a mental note to switch to the other.

Museums folks - I love them, Mike is meh, so I will only bore him with one. Which one?

We didn't get to visit any of the Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, or Rockefeller Centre. Which one? All of them?

The 9/11 Memorial was not complete during our last trip, so that's right at the top of our must-do list.

Zero interest in a Broadway show. We are not those kind of people. Ball game - meh. (Mets are at the Yankees. I'm a Blue Jays girl.) No Billy Joel concert that week either. :(

When y'all are recovered from your Fourth of July celebrations, throw your recommendations at me.

Oh yeah, I'll be turning 50 during this trip, so it's a special occasion, not just a regular vacay.

Depending on whether you prefer art or science, I would go with either Natural History or MoMA for museum. There is also a small museum on the northern tip of Manhattan called the Cloisters that you'd like. The surrounding park is nice too.

I haven't done any 9/11 memorial stuff. I'd lean towards ESB for which building to visit the top of.

Take Mike to McSoreley's on his birthday. Just so you can have the photo of him looking like a giant while he double fists the small mugs of beer they give you. Also the oldest bar in the city, but you'll remember the silly picture more.

My favorite museum by far is the Museum of Natural History. It has an awesome planetarium and it's where the dinosaur bones are. It's also right near Central Park. Then you can walk down Columbus Ave and eat in one their MANY restaurants. That's the only area of the city I'm super- familiar with. Sounds like a good day to meet you. ;)

I'd personally go to the museum that Ross worked in before his boss ate his sandwich.

That's modeled after the Museum of Natural History. It's also the one from Night at the Museum.

It's not just that the museum houses amazing artifacts, it's also one of those old Manhattan buildings with the ornate carvings and giant marble staircases - it's just awesome.
