Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

Chris and Marcy are only in Mwanza for another week, so the daily FB posts and emails will stop shortly. Auntie is terrible at posting pics and regular updates. :(

Over the past two years, we have slowly been building bunk beds for the boys. Originally, they each slept on a 1" foam pad on the floor, which got moved on to the bed frames, two by two as they were built. Well, yesterday was mattress day! Honest to goodness mattresses.

And the "treasures" they had stashed under their old foam pads:

That cereal box has been saved to make a school book cover. Nothing goes to waste in Tanzania.

As a special treat, the boys were taken to the beach after a long day at school. These kids take their studies very seriously, as an education is the only way to ensure that they don't end up back on the streets as adults.

Chris and Marce treated them to a meal at a restaurant on the beach - probably their first meal ever in a restaurant. What they are eating is called mayai and chips - essentially French fries cooked into an egg. Also pictured are the last of the fish fingers. The boys had never had them before and were quite perplexed as they had never before seen any kind of fish that had fingers. Legit.

For the record, this is how they eat at home:

On the floor, being served by Theresa, our original cook from the orphanage 25 years ago. She is employed as the House Mother. Funny thing is - they call Theresa "Bibi" which means grandma, but call Auntie "Mama".

What you are seeing there is plantain served alongside an onion and tomato stew, all cooked outside over a coal pit.

Now that the boys have mattresses, hopefully Auntie's next goal is to get them a table and some chairs. It is however, very much an African tradition to eat your food while squatting (think a catcher's stance) on the ground or floor, so maybe the table and chairs thing is just my cultural bias.
