Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

It just dawned on me... tomorrow will be the first time I've ever taught a full day on a Wednesday. In years' past we've had early release every Wednesday for professional development for staff. This year kids are off the second Monday of every month, and that's when we're doing professional development. It was kind of nice to have Wednesdays be early releases, but it created lots of scheduling headaches, and not every day was consistent. I think I'll end up liking this better. It will be nice to have at least one "day off" every month. Even though I still have to work.

I'm so glad we moved away from Early Release years ago, it was a major headache. By the time the kids left and staff go their lunch break there wasn't time or motivation to accomplish anything. Our professional development days are on Fridays once a month.

We didn't do Fridays because the admin was worried we wouldn't be focused at the end of a week. Fair enough. They're probably right.

They were also worried everyone would take those days off. We were told we can't take personal days on our Monday PDs.

And yes, we didn't get anything done on our Wednesdays. Kids got out a 2, really 2:20 by the time busses actually got there, and then started PD from 2:30-3:45. Major waste of time, especially when our past principals had no idea what to do, so they just said "work on standards" about every week. There's a reason our superintendent, who's in year 3, restructured the whole PD program. We actually have an incredibly well put together PD Guide that lists everything we're doing during every minute of every PD for the rest of the year. It's so detailed, it even says what we're having for breakfast and lunch. No joke.

We had it in our staff handbook that no personal days were allowed on PD's/inservice, but there were exceptions being made constantly so this year they took that rule away.

I'm not sure how you are, but we get 3 personal days and 7 sick days each year. I wish they would do away with the designation. Just give us 10 PTO days. They are our days... we can use them how we want. It's not like people aren't using sick days as personal days.

We get 2 personal days and 8 sick days and I totally agree that they should just be PTO days. I have about 100 sick days racked up, by the time I retire I should have a nice last year. Retirement isn't for quite a few more years though.

We used to be 2 and 8, but one of them got switched to a personal day a few years back. I'm probably around 50 days myself. I rarely use sick days. Except last year when between February and April I had the flu, common cold, lost my voice, and got strep. I think I took 6 sick days in that time span, and I probably used fewer sick days in my prior 4 years combined.

Our policy for unused sick days is awful. We don't get paid out for any of them until we are past 100 banked days. Then we have to donate some to the district's sick leave bank first that staff could use if they have something major happen. After that I think it's $10 a day we get paid out. So really we should be using every single day because there's no benefit for not using them. It's more insurance in case something happens. I'm going to try and use more days this year than before.

It's nice to have a break now and then. I notice that here, we have days off spread throughout the school year and it's so nice because by that time the kids are in need of a break and I'm sure the kids are, too. We always had so few of those and then Summer break seemed SO long. It's nicer to have a week here and there, or a couple days here, and a week there instead of having all the days off in one long block.

Do you have to put in requests for PTO days? When I was teaching, we got 2 PTO days and 6 sick days per year, but PTO days had to be approved in advance. And once you were through your sick days, if you got sick, you couldn't use a PTO day, you had to turn in part of your salary to pay for a sub for that day. I went to school when I had no voice because I didn't want to waste a sick day. I played Lady and the Tramp for all my classes so I didn't have to talk. That's the nice thing about music, I guess....new class every hour, so I didn't have to come up with things to fill a whole day. And they didn't have music every day, so the next day was a new class. You can fill up a whole week with 1 movie.

Speaking of schools, we had the parent evening last night for our daughter's school and boy was that....fun? Our kids are getting the short end of the stick. Long story short, the population is shrinking and they decided that they don't need 3 schools, only 2. But they couldn't decide which 2 schools should remain and which be closed, so they are closing all three and starting 2 new schools from scratch. So at a certain point, they formed these 2 new schools and all the kids going into 7th grade had to choose one of the 2 new schools while all the kids who were already in high school got to stay where were. They were promised they would get to remain in their own building, with their own teachers, teachers would just go between the existing school and the new schools to have a full roster. Everything would be shared. But now, they are making the kids from the old schools move because they want our building for one of the new schools, and it's too small to house both. And all the teachers are being sent to the new schools and our kids are left without teachers for some things because there's a shortage. And things like theater are canceled, because our school is going to close.....in 3 years. But they can't afford to do theater at BOTH schools, and the new school now has more kids than the older one, and rather than combine it for a couple of years, our kids just don't get to do theater anymore. The principal got an earful last night and seemed oblivious to the fact that there's an issue. Like, WAKE UP! All the resources are being taken away from our kids to give to the other schools and you don't see that our kids are feeling like no one cares about their education? Of COURSE they are asking "What about us? We're still here!" It's like the school board just can't wait to close the existing schools so they can wash their hands of it. They are holding the funeral and dividing the estate before the school is even dead!
