Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

So many plans today. So few vehicular options.
Mike didn’t get back until 4:15, and Spenser had my car all day.

Did I get out to the bakery for a cherry cheesecake? No, I did not.

Did we get out to the nursery? No, we did not.

Did I get dressed for nothing? Yup, looks like it.
I even put on pants and everything. 🙁

Ski’s mad at me. Says I raised him to be a (never mind the word he used).

Ski: I got a text from somebody asking to rent my canoe. He wants me to drop it off at the boat ramp at noon on Friday, and they’ll return it Sunday. $75.
What did I say?

Me: Who was it?

Ski: Ryland. What did I say?

Me: You said - You’re working on Friday, pick it up and you can borrow it for free. Don’t wreck it.

Ski: That’s exactly what I said. You raised me to be soft, Ma.

All together now: You don’t take money from friends or family.

The boys are sick of each other and fighting constantly. Ski thinks he’s so bad-a$$, but Spenser has 130 lbs on him, so it might actually be a fair fight if they come to blows.

Anyway, Spenser says he’s moving out next week. Back in with his former room-mate, turned former girlfriend, turned best friend ... and her brother.

In a perfect world, maybe they’ll get back together. He had a fledgling relationship with a new girl just before the lockdown, but they’ve now been apart longer than they were ever together.

I’m glad and sad and relieved and worried, and counting the days - in more ways than one. We’ll see how this goes.

It will be good for him. And Ski. And you. But mainly for him.

A very good article, whether you're in hospitality, or just enjoy travel (who doesn't?)

Some of this is fine -- enhanced cleanliness, etc.

On the tech end, the less touching of kiosk screens (for check-in, etc.) is definitely something that needs to be addressed. Somewhat related to this: back in early January, the ATM machine at my bank was updated to be 100% touch screen (prior to pandemic general awareness). So, once the health guidelines (COVID-19) suggested that touching public surfaces might not be the best thing, I wore gloves to use at the ATM. Problem was, that the touch screens react to heat, and did not respond to my gloved finger! 🤦‍♀️ (Hence, now I keep hand sanitizer in the car.)

Oh, I'd completely bypass the stupid ATM touch screen machine, but that would mean that I'd have to go to the stupid drive up window lane, wait in line, and I can never figure out how close to park my car to the teller tray, that pops out of the side of the building. Ugh.

The other (hotel) tech thing I hate is to expect a paying customer to use their own phone, to open the guest room door. What if a guest doesn't have that type of phone, or just doesn't carry a phone? Or, what if they have a phone and their battery runs out during the day? Do they have to wait 30 minutes someplace to charge up the phone, just so that they can open their guest room door?! Not to mention, why add some sort of outside software to your own phone (from the hotel -- Hilton, for example), and have it stored on your phone? What does the hotel do with that information from YOUR phone?

Sorry for the rant. Minnie's life is getting very complicated these days. :hilarious:

Yeah we, as well as a lot of other hotels and properties are still on the fence as to whether we'll ever convert to the phone-as-a-room-key system. Keeping a watchful eye on those in the industry already implementing this tech, and seeing if the positive guest reaction is such a significant boost over the traditional key cards that would make it a worthwhile investment. Some may argue that it's cheaper for the property to go that route, but would it cost guest satisfaction with an already well-established way that works, and has worked for a long time? If it ain't broke...is it really worth the fix? Time will tell. Guests overwhelmingly seem to have no problem with the current key card system (and they are super easy to disinfect between guest turnovers). Changes they request and love to see come from within the room, new amenities, upgrades, etc, not how to get into the room.

Edit: Though to put your worries to rest, if all properties ever use the phone/key system, it would be an option rather than a replacement if you're unable to use your phone. We'll always make sure guests are able to get into their rooms.
The question is, is such an added luxury SO in demand to make it worthwhile...

That's a sensible, measured approach to this. Even if the system turned out to be a success, I'd be against it, only "IF" there was not some sort of override. Someone could lose a phone, or it may malfunction, or they forgot to pay their phone bill, for example. (Or, in my case, I'd ask for a metal room key. :hilarious: )

So, would the hotel management keep some phones available (they'd only be programmed to open a guest room door -- no other functions), that they could lend to a guest if needed? The phone would be turned in at the end of the guest's visit. (And this is lame, but for the purpose of discussion -- even charge a small deposit for the phone lent out, and the deposit would be wiped when the phone was returned.)

I mean, I just can't imagine that a new system would be implemented, without some sort of backup for any sort of issues that will arise. People are imperfect -- I guarantee some (not many) will not have a phone for various reasons.

Yeah I edited my post to include that. There will always be a backup if the phone option is off the table for guests.

A friend of mine messaged me that he just ate some Froot Loops, and I’m thinking, “Dude, hold my milk”.

(Literally hold my milk. We ate these straight from the bowl like they were potato chips. 😂)

What kind of cheesecake does the bakery make? Is it a New York style, or a no bake, etc? Can you make one yourself?

I could, but we all know I won’t.

TIMBITS cereal...wow! Is that new? We probably won't get it here but I'd love to see it made in the chocolate glazed!
