I think what has changed is that since they deliver by vehicle now their routes have been enlarged to justify it, so they have a lot more mail to deliver. Cutting back on mail carriers was necessary to remain profitable.

Oh come now. Surely you didn't sleep through all of Presidential Interests and Hobbies 101.

It's common knowledge that Ford kept the wheel in his office, Clinton had a saxophone in his office, Reagan had a cowboy hat with a pair of boots, and Obama had Five Guys takeout.

What many people don't know, however, is which president had problems with @JenniferS and her husband hiding in their office, waiting for them to step outta the room to thieve their lunch.

But we know.

Clinton had the dark blue rug. Carter kept Ford’s decoration but rearranged the furniture. Reagan only changed the upholstery of the furniture in his first term, but got a new rug in his second. The Obama Oval Office is instantly recognizable by the overly casual furniture and striped wallpaper. And all of this only proves that I’m a complete nerd.

That's probably the most reasonable answer I've read in various discussions about this topic. Makes sense. I don't like it, but it makes sense.
