Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

Just heard some interesting / bittersweet news about one of my favorite destinations in Florida. It turns out the airboats at Myakka River State park in southwest Fla will be closing permanently after the 31st. While this is really no big loss for me (they tend to be more noise pollution than anything, and take away from the tranquility of the upper lake), it just feels strange hearing of them being discontinued after all these years.

I remember riding one of them as a child in the 80's with my Grandpa, and seeing my first alligator in the wild. And for folks who don't care to rent canoes or kayaks, or have small children, but still want to explore the upper lake... the airboats served a great purpose. I'm interested in what the plans are to take their place (just hopefully something quieter).

So while not a tremendous loss, but still some emotional attachment from childhood, I guess "strange" is the way it feels to learn of this news.

I've ridden that boat too - it is rather loud and is too big to maneuver well in the little coves along the lake.
I wonder if boat tour companies are reviewing their safety protocols in the wake of the duck boat tragedy?

That was my first thought too - that and the pollution involved,

Apparently, I was mistaken. Initially it was cooling down, then I attributed the slowdown in cooling to having cooked dinner in the kitchen and generated heat, but around 9 I came home to a hot, humid house and noticed the compressor was again off.

🤬

That stinks - hope they can fix it soon!

I wondered the same thing when I first learned the news. From what I'm reading on Facebook though, it sounds like simply new ownership on the tours and concessions, and plans they've had for awhile to replace the tour boats with "something else". What the replacement is, is still a mystery. Hopefully not a louder tour boat.

That's too bad, as you had fond family memories of riding that boat. I hope they replace it with something as nice, or even nicer than before, for you.

The only airboat I was ever on in my life was a small one--I was driving it!! :hilarious: :hilarious: It was years ago. on one of my trips to WDW, etc. A friend of mine from work, and I thought it would be a blast to rent one. The airboats were some place over in Kissimmee, I think. She didn't want to drive it, so that left me. :p

So there I was, a chick from up North--(adept at riding city buses and trains, and yet, hardly ever drove a car)--and this airboat company guy is showing me the controls of a freaking airboat, in some swamp . . . Luckily, it didn't go fast, but I still managed to almost sideswipe another boat. :p (Those people looked scared. Oops . . .)

If there is ever another time that I go on one of those boats, I'm only going on the larger sized ones like you went on, and I'm leaving the driving to a professional. ;)
