I love to peek out the windows and pretend ...

Nah, you gotta go big or go home. I've stood at the top of the exquisite grand staircase over in The Breakers, and pretended the (other tour groups downstairs) were waiting for my "entrance" down the stairs! :hilarious:

OK - possibly a really dumb question - If you're invited to a "holiday get together that lists the time as 5 - 8 pm, do you assume it's a dinner party?

The giveaway here is "get together" not dinner. So I agree with others--hors d'oeuvres, finger foods, desserts, drinks. Sounds like a cocktail party to me.-- maybe people don't announce it that way anymore. o_O

Oh, back to the mansions for a moment -- I also love the "smaller" ones that don't get nearly the hype. Some of my favorites down there are Chateau Sur Mer, Chepstow, and Kingscote. And the Isaac Bell House (1883) is one of the best (still surviving) shingle style architectural homes in the U.S. The indoor woodwork of master craftsmen is something to behold. (All the above are seasonal and probably won't open again until the spring---I highly recommend all of them for your bucket list.)

I am right on the edge of a massive foot cramp. Could go away or could have me curled up in a ball cursing the worst of curses. The suspense is killing me.
