Smiled and gave an affirmative nod to your daughter's observation (above). I've had multiple jobs in my life, and I don't think even one of them gave a clear job "description"; what happens more often, is that they insert "related duties as required" at the end of the post. Hence, my own experience has been 50% in line with the first part of the job description, and 50% of whatever else needed to be done. Case in point: a friend of mine worked for a college professor who had a frog, as a pet, in a tank (in his office). She soon found out that part of her "related duties" was to feed live crickets to the frog!!

Yeah, she thinks it was a weed out initial interview from possibly the HR department as there was many conflicting answers to her questions. She liked the job. what she'd like to do but is cautious given the amount of travel and overnighting was conflicting along with a salary position, no overtime and at times 40-60 hours a week and including weekends. That part was driven home. We shall see how the next interview goes but she is guarded.

This should be the end of jobs like this. Salaries based on a 40 hour week but tacking on another 20 hours of free labor. The presidents executive order to the US Labor Board should go into effect in 2015 fixing stuff like that.

What position is it for? Something she likes I hope.

She has flopped back and forth but seems to have landed on what she likes most to focus on at least initially. University Administration Student Services.

She has also looked into Statistical Data reconfiguration and data mining. She would love someday, not initially work for Disney in their department of statistical data.

She has a double major and a minor so she has options.

Animal Shelters - no prob.
Their ads and infomercials - mute or fast forward.

I so agree! I believe the decision makers need to rethink their marketing to raise money for animal shelters and animal societies. As one who had a lost dog housed in my backyard this morning and the critter hugger I am, I turn the channel or mute the TV, in the car I switch the channel or turn it off for a few minutes.

I understand there are horrible things that some poor creatures go through but nobody wants to watch that and the commercials are long and maudlin. They need to market the positive happy things about owning a pet. It also seems that for every great shelter there is a bad shelter. All likely started with the best of intentions but some developing into places like a bad hoarders episode, out of control from the initial intent.

Indian Pudding Recipe
  • Yield: Serves 8-10.
Add to shopping list
Ingredients
  • 6 cups of milk
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 1/3 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1 cup golden raisins (optional)
  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream
Method
1 Scald the milk and butter in a large double boiler. Or heat the milk and butter for 5 or 6 minutes on high heat in the microwave, until it is boiling, then transfer it to a pot on the stove. Keep hot on medium heat.
2 Preheat oven to 250°F.
3 In a separate bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, and salt; stir in molasses. Thin the mixture with about 1/2 cup of scalded milk, a few tablespoons at a time, then gradually add the mixture back to the large pot of scalded milk. Cook, stirring until thickened.
4 Temper the eggs by slowly adding a half cup of the hot milk cornmeal mixture to the beaten eggs, whisking constantly. Add the egg mixture back in with the hot milk cornmeal mixture, stir to combine. Stir in the sugar and spices, until smooth. At this point, if the mixture is clumpy, you can run it through a blender to smooth it out. Stir in the raisins (optional). Pour into a 2 1/2 quart shallow casserole dish. Bake for 2 hours at 250°F.
5 Allow the pudding to cool about an hour to be at its best. It should be reheated to warm temperature if it has been chilled. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

I love Indian Pudding. There was a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant not far from here that used to have The. Best. Indian pudding, but they closed a few years ago. I haven't found any I like as much as that one sine. It was a meal in itself - served hot with french vanilla ice cream on top.

Every time I see one I go pick up and cuddle my cat and squeeze her as hard as I can. It's a good thing she likes to be picked up and cuddled and squeezed
I am one of those people that can't watch suffering, be it animals, or starving under-privileged children.
I know abuse, neglect, and suffering exists. I do not ignore it. I just can't watch it.

I am currently or have in the past, been personally involved with four separate child care projects in Africa. I donate money to the cause, I sit on the BoD, I fundraise.

People know what starving, emaciated children look like.
In our fundraising efforts, we show them the RESULTS of their donations. We illustrate how much food $50 will buy. We show the kind of house that rents for $45 for six months, to get a widowed mom and her five kids off the streets.

I know tugging at the heart strings for some people makes them open their wallets. For me, it forces me to change the channel.

Plus, I can't stand Sarah McLachlan.
