She started really reading well around age 4. It's in the genes. Most of our family (back to my great grandparents) have been educators or worked in the school system. BUT she hates math.

That's really cool. My daughter reads well but I can't get her to sit and read. She asked to read The Hobbit but I was afraid the imagery may be too scary for her. I think we will give it a try!

My daughter was and is an avid reader too. It got to the point that by second grade I couldn't keep up with reading ahead of her to make sure the books she chose were appropriate. BTW, the "modern" Nancy Drew stories? not so much.....My son is more the sci-fi reader.

One more day!

I love "day before you leave" day. We usually get take-out and start the vacation early. I always used to say that the vacation doesn't start until the dog goes to the kennel and I can vacuum all the dog hair without him making more! My neighbor has been watching our dog for us the last few years (not the puppy...yet...depends how calm he gets in the next 5 months) so I come home to more dog hair than I left. I hate that!!

I'm pretty much all set so today will be a lazy day I guess. DH is going to get a haircut, and I have a little laundry to do, but that's about as exciting as it gets around here.

@NYwdwfan I used to read the modern ones. But I waited until I was about 11 for those. Never could get into the older ones. Used to love the Cam Jansen books. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor was one of my favorites, and as long as your daughter does not pick them up from the Teen section, they should be fine. Shiloh your daughter would probably really enjoy if she likes dogs. Hatfords and Malloys was a hysterical series. First one is The Boys Start the War. And The Grand Escape I adored (it's about cats). The Alice books she should start later as they include, um, girl stuff. Commonsensemedia.org can also recommend some good books.

EDIT: I forgot about the Alice prequels. Those would be fine

Thanks!! She absolutely LOVES dogs - I will have to get her Shiloh. I saw the DVD at the library last week - didn't realize there is book (I watched a LOT of TV growing up and was not too keen on reading). She's a young 9 and I definitely want to keep her with age appropriate subject matter in that regard - thanks for the recommendations!

I just discovered that I (and I alone) have enough Southwest rewards points for one-way free. I've flown 1 more round trip than both the kids and my husband. Yay!

Well, we're going to TN in December, and then back to FL for about 6 weeks at the end of January, but we'll be driving for both of those. We're hoping to go west in the spring, but we're still trying to figure that one out.
