I honestly wish our crab population was high enough to have that problem. Thanks in part to this rough winter and also in part to Virginia for not making it illegal to take female crabs that have the sponges on them, our crab population is down. By a lot. In fact, a lot of crabs have been coming from southern states like Louisiana, Texas, and the CarolinasBetter than living here

Never heard of Maryland crab cakes?Just doing some research on that statement.
I was wondering if Maryland was even known for crabs at all and was surprised to find that the state has an Official State Crustacean!!!
Why is Maryland one of only three states that even has an Official State Crustacean ?
Nope ....must be a Maryland thing.Never heard of Maryland crab cakes?
Crab cakes from Phillips!Never heard of Maryland crab cakes?
Something alcoholic.I'm trying to figure out what's in that drink the man is holding?
It is. They are made of crab meat, mustard, mayo, and Old Bay. Frankly, I can't stand them. I'd rather have a real crab or crab soup.Nope ....must be a Maryland thing.
Probably a Natty BohSomething alcoholic.

A lot of our seafood restaurants around here sell crab cakes Maryland style so that is how I learned about it.Nope ....must be a Maryland thing.

Being from a coastal state, I'm quite familiar with crab cakes...we just don't call them Maryland Crab Cakes....we don't even call them Alabama Crab Cakes. It is. They are made of crab meat, mustard, mayo, and Old Bay. Frankly, I can't stand them. I'd rather have a real crab or crab soup.
MDers take their crab very seriously. There's even different ways of picking a crab depending on where you are from. My dad picks them like someone from Baltimore, but my mom picks her like they do on the Eastern shore because her family is from the Eastern Shore. She taught me how to pick a crab, so I pick them Eastern shore style. And depending on the family, when you eat crabs, you may eat crabs and nothing else, or you may eat crabs with something else. In my immediate family, we eat crabs with french fries, onion rings, and potato salad. I love taking an onion ring and wiping it across the top of the crab. In my extended family, we'll have lasagna, chicken strips, and all kinds of other food with our crabs. It's pretty much a ritual. You'll spend about 2-3 hours eating crabs.
Going to the fishery and picking out crabs in the tank?Being from a coastal state, I'm quite familiar with crab cakes...we just don't call them Maryland Crab Cakes....we don't even call them Alabama Crab Cakes.
What is picking a crab? Is that what you call Crab Fishing? I just use a trap.
I guess women would pick a crab by the color of their eyes vs. the size of their claw.Going to the fishery and picking out crabs in the tank?
No. When you buy crabs and/or serve them, they look like this:Being from a coastal state, I'm quite familiar with crab cakes...we just don't call them Maryland Crab Cakes....we don't even call them Alabama Crab Cakes.

You don't go to a fishery and get crabs. You either get them yourself or get them from a seafood restaurant. Most places let you carry out the crabs. Some let you eat in. We usually get carry out. They usually have small, medium, large, and extra large crabs which they size and give to you. The crabs are usually sold by the half dozen. Larger crabs will of course cost more. Usually my family gets two dozen large crabs and we'll each eat between 6 and 8 crabs, minus my brother who only eats one or two.Going to the fishery and picking out crabs in the tank?
No. When you buy crabs and/or serve them, they look like this:
You gotta get the meat out, so ya gotta pick them.
This is how my dad picks a crab, which I consider wrong.

My mom and I don't break the crab body in half. We do it more like this guy does:
Instead of breaking it in half, he cuts it so you end up with three pieces, one large and two small pieces.
Difference between MD crab cakes and other crab cakes is that the crab meat was (most likely) boiled and MD crab cakes always use steamed crab meat. This is one reason why MDers who like crab cakes will only order them in MD. We consider boiling a crab to be ruining a crab.
