"When you're happy like a fool, let it take you over"-Our May 2012 Trip Report

Hello, Everyone! Welcome to our 2012 Walt Disney World Trip Report. For those of you who haven't followed along in one of our trip reports before, here is the link to the one I wrote from our last vacation in March of 2011.

This year our vacation was from Thursday, May 10th through Friday, May 18th and we stayed at Pop Century. It was just me (Lesley) and my husband (Andrew-aka Andy) on this trip. Also along for this trip was my new NIKON D3100 DSLR camera and two lenses I got as a graduation gift from my dad. We have "named" several of our gadgets (for example, the GPS we used on this trip is named Cornelia) so I thought it would be fitting to name my new camera Walter.

I started going on Disney vacations when I was a child in the early '90s, and have gone to the parks about 10 times now. Andy's first trip was with my family in September of 2008 and he has now gone a total of 4 times with me.

After returning from our vacation last year, we immediately began talking about going in 2012, but this time we wanted the trip to just be the two of us-sort of a 2nd Honeymoon for us. We've always gone with other family members to Disney, and although we've been married for almost 6 years and dated 5 years before that, we've never been on a vacation just the two of us. Even on our honeymoon we stayed with family in Mexico to save money.
I also went back to college in August of 2011 and I realized I would graduate in May of 2012, so we decided we'd take our vacation immediately following my graduation, as a celebration.

I graduated Tuesday, May 8th with a degree in Early Childcare and Education. Wednesday night we dropped our son, Connor (5) off with my mom for the night. While we were away he was going to spend the night with her, a few nights with Andy's parents and then about a week with my dad at the mountains in Tennessee. Before dropping Connor off we went out to dinner with my sister and her boyfriend, then Andy and I went home, threw some last minute things in our suitcase and went to bed early.

At 2:30 a.m. our alarm went off. When we drive to WDW (we live in S.C. so the drive is about 8 hours) we like to leave in the very early morning hours, that way we get to our hotel early and we prefer it to driving late at night. We brushed our teeth, got dressed and loaded up the truck. My dad loaned us his truck to use during our vacation because it is new and under warranty whereas Andy's car and my Jeep are less dependable.

Too early

We pulled out of our driveway at 3:03 a.m. We filled up the tank the night before-bless you, Bi-Lo Fuel Perks, you lowered our gas to $2.90 a gallon! Believe it or not, we got great milage using my dad's truck and we didn't have to spend too much on gas throughout the trip. We rolled out of the neighborhood blasting "Good Life" by One Republic in the stereo. We do have a good life and we were on our way to make it even better!

On the road

Around 5:20 a.m. we made our way onto I-95. At 6:00 we stopped for gas at a BP near Beaufort. As a graduation gift my dad's girlfriend gave me a BP gas card knowing I'd need it for our vacation-it was an excellent gift that went to great use! I was getting hungry but because of the strange hours we had been awake I wasn't sure what I wanted. I settled on Pringles and a Pepsi while Andy got a Red Bull. Probably not the best meal to have at 6 in the morning.

Around 6:30 we made it into Georgia. We drove into some serious fog that lasted for a good distance. We didn't realize quite how foggy it was until after looking at the picture.

Horrible fog

I kept busy writing thank you notes to my friends and family for their generous graduation gifts or either napping.

Keeping busy

Around 8 a.m. we finally crossed the state line into Florida. We walked around the Welcome Center to use the restroom, stretch our legs and to try some good old Florida orange juice.

Yummy!

Stretching our legs

I dozed for a bit and soon after I woke up we were in Jacksonville.

A bit later we saw this sign…

I love your report so far. I love the pictures. And I agree that you mostly use the room as a place to sleep and shower. We stayed at POR a coupel times then decided to try POP and have stayed there 3 times (4 this July). I would love to upgrade to a moderate again or even a deluxe but to me its too much to spend on sleeping and showering. I am going to have to check out Beaches and Cream during my college program this fall.

Congrats on graduating!! That's exciting. I'm working on my masters and can't even imagine taking more classes then I do already. Great job on working to get it done.

Looking forward to more updates!

I don't know what more to say than I AM LOOVING YOUR TR! :sohappy: The way you tell your story and your pictures are awesome! I don't know what you use to upload your pictures, but it is also a bonus because most of the other TR's have pictures from PhotoBucket and that website is blocked on my school computers (disabling me to view most pictures from the other TR's on the computers). As a senior with 1 more day left of school I have been passing my time in advisory, in the library, reading and loving your TR! So thanks for that! :animwink: Haha! It sounds like you guys have had a blast so far and you haven't even made it into the parks yet! I hope to go to Beaches N' Cream when I go with my best friends in 27 more days! Maybe we'll try the sink?!:slurp:
Can't wait to read more!

BIG Congrats on graduating from college, that's awesome! I loved that cup you found about the mornings not being magical! I'm sooo NOT a morning person either and that cup would be perfect for me, I loves my sleep! LOL! I've been to WDW more times than I can count but for some reason have just never made it to Beaches and Cream! I so need to make that part of the agenda this next time when we go, it's like forever away in November! LOL! That's why I love reading TRs it reminds me of things that I still need to do at WDW! Eeek, I'm so excited now! Just wanted to say that your TR is awesome so far and I can't wait to read and see the pics from the parks!

Thank you, this vacation was the icing on the cake after graduation! I'm thinking of getting the ham and pineapple on it next time just to try it. I figure if I don't like it I can always take it off, but I can't imagine not liking anything at Earl (except for the chips-lol). I remember reading your honeymoon and that you guys stayed at Beach Club-so jealous! Thanks for reading, hoping to have Day 4 and our first park day up in a bit.

I've taught preschool for many years and while some of my family think I should teach Kindergarten, I'm more interested in children's advocacy. I'm hoping to get a job as a daycare director, with DSS or with Make A Wish. I've worked with children since I was 15 and I've seen some really bad situations that kids can be in and I have a passion for making the children feel better about themselves. Thanks for reading!

I was waiting for someone to notice the background! I didn't notice it until I got the picture developed and I laughed my tail off! Thanks for following along and for the congrats! I sure have more up soon!

Beaches and Cream ice cream beats Dairy Queen, Brusters and Baskin Robins any day! Keep reading, more to come soon!

nice job with the pics!

Thank you, I had a lot of fun with the new camera. We tried to take some unique pics once we got in the parks. You'll see several on day 4 that I tried to make look "different"...hopefully you all will think they turned out neat!

I have a feeling we will eventually try out a Moderate or Deluxe but it will be a one time only thing and we will be back to Values. You HAVE to try Beaches and Cream, you will not regret it! Thanks for the congrats! It was hard work but I actually enjoyed it!

Thank you so much for sharing your trip with us! I'm really enjoying the read!

You are welcome. I use the Trip Reports as a way for my family to see what we did and I print it out and use it in a scrapbook as well. Glad you are enjoying it!

I'm so glad you love it! I'm glad you like the pictures, makes me feel like I put the new camera to good use! I use Flickr to upload my pictures. I'm glad I've been helpful at school. lol I wanted to try the kitchen sink but my hubby doesn't like ice cream, only malts. We are planning a trip next year with my sister and her boyfriend so I'm hoping we can try it then. Keep reading, we finally make it to the parks on Day 4 and I will post it tonight!

Thank you! Isn't that cup the best?! I so regret not buying it! Like I've said so many times, you must try out Beaches and Cream if you have never gone before. I would go right after it opens to avoid a crowd. We pretty much had the place to ourselves, it was great! Thanks for reading, park pics are coming up tonight!

Sunday, May 13th

Our alarm went off this morning at 7 a.m. We got dressed and packed up the last bit of our things to take to Pop Century. Andy loaded some things in the truck while I stayed in the room to finish getting ready. When he came back to the room, he was carrying a few flowers in his hands.

n the lobby the staff were giving out flowers for Mother's Day and he got me some. It made my heart melt but I also got a bit misty eyed because I missed my baby boy. When we planned this trip we didn't even notice that Mother's Day would be when we were gone. About two weeks before our trip I looked at the calendar and realized it. I was torn because it would be the only Mother's Day I had been without Connor, but we couldn't change our dates. I told Andy not to worry, that every day with Connor is Mother's Day to me! I can see the eyes rolling now and I'm sure you are thinking that is the cheesiest thing you've ever heard, but we are blessed with a sweet spirited, kind hearted son who shows me daily that he loves me, and I do the same for him. Besides, he was in good hands and was away on vacation too!

We checked out at 8 and Andy grabbed some free breakfast in the food court. I didn't want anything, just a sip of Coke for a little caffeine.

We took the short drive over to Pop Century. The lobby was pretty empty and check-in went smoothly. We were asked if we had a building preference. We didn't, but we did ask if we could get a king bed. The receptionist said it wasn't a problem and told us our room was ready. We were in room 0403 in building 10 of the 70's section. With our keys in our hand we made our way to our room to unload our bags.

Andy loved the above poster that was hanging beside our bed. It had photos of scenes from opening day.

Our room came with a mini fridge, which was a nice surprise.

We didn't take too long in the room because we were anxious to finally get into a park. We went to the bus stop and got in line for a Magic Kingdom bus. I can't remember what time opening was that day but we got there just after and the place wasn't busy at all.

We spent some time walking down Main Street and around the castle.

Then, we made our way toward Tomorrowland to get on our first ride of the trip: Space Mountain. The wait was only 10 minutes, so before we got in line we decided to grab Fast Passes to use at a later time. The posted 10 minute wait time was honestly the time it took you to walk to the ride. We waited for one group ahead of us to get on their rocket and then it was our turn.

After that, we went to the Carousel of Progress. This is a favorite of ours and it doesn't bother us at all that the song gets stuck in your head all day!

When we were out of there, Connor called me to tell me "happy Mother's Day". It was precious and I was glad to hear his voice. He was having a blast swimming, looking at bears and eating lots of ice cream with his Granddaddy in Tennessee. When I got off the phone with him, Andy went to use the restroom and I spotted Stitch. We've met him before but he didn't have a line so I went to have my picture taken with him. Andy came out just in time to have his photo taken with us.

We then used our Fast Passes to go on Space Mountain again. I forget what the wait for Stand-by was but we were glad we got Fast Passes earlier because Stand-by had a pretty good wait. After our second ride we walked out and saw Buzz Lightyear with a very short line.

with buzz

We've also met him before, but you can never have enough character pictures!

By this time I was getting hungry since I skipped out on breakfast. We were now on the dining plan and we planned on going to a counter-service restaurant, but we wanted to go to one we hadn't tried before. We made our way toward Fantasyland and went to Pinocchio Village haus.

Andy got the chicken parmesan, pasta, salad, mango gelato and a coke.

I got the chicken nuggets, fries, chocolate gelato and a coke.

The food was good to us and Andy especially liked his. We would eat there again for sure. After lunch, we went over to Haunted Mansion.

The new queue was being built when we went last year and we were only able to see parts of it. This time we went through it and we were pretty impressed with it.

btmrr

From the queue, we could see Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. We were pretty sad that it was down while we were there, it is one of our favorite rides. Anyway, after Haunted Mansion we went to Pirates.

pirate drew

Before we left for Florida we asked Connor what toy he wanted us to bring him back. He said he wanted a long pirate sword, so we got this for him…

cons toy

We had it shipped back to our room so we could keep our hands free. While we were checking out, the girl at the register gave me an "I'm celebrating" button and wrote "College Graduation" on it. I wore it for the rest of the day and got a lot of "congratulations" from a lot of people, but I didn't wear it any other day. Those things are just too bulky to me.

We had the hopper option on our tickets, and we were itching to go to Epcot. On our way out of Magic Kingdom we saw the Dapper Dans.

dapper dans

We watched them sing "Happy Birthday" to a little girl. When they were finished she said "I can tap dance. Want to see?" and began tap dancing in the middle of Main Street with the Dapper Dans. It was precious and she got a big round of applause when she was finished.

Up next, day 4 continues with Epcot, dinner at 'Ohana and finishing our first day at midnight at Magic Kingdom!

Congrats on the graduation! I kindof related to you with the whole mothers day thing (I'm not a mother) but my college graduation was actually on mothers day so that was interesting! It was cool though because I think all of the mothers were really happy:)

but you two are a cute couple and I love how you share entrees, I feel that is a good sign of a happy couple haha.

your pictures are helping me get my Disney fix and I cannot wait to read about 'Ohana we are going there for the first time in August and are excited!!

oh and I was also wondering if WDW had graduation pin/buttons because I saw on instaland (instagram pictures from Disneyland) with girls holding buttons that say graduation, but I guess not because you wrote yours in? I just want one in August! [:
