Trip Report When WDW Became HOME.

There are times we take vacations with our families where we have wonderful times and can't wait to go back to experience more. Then there are times where you take a vacation and for whatever reason, you feel at HOME. You can exhale. Your goal changes from seeing things and experiencing things to just breathing and enjoying one another. For us, our past WDW trip became just that! The quest of attractions and short wait times became less important and instead the search for laughter, memories and just enjoying the little things became our focus.

This trip was planned after a hard long three years of taking care of both of my parents who became ill and passed away. During that time I also started and completed graduate school. The past three years my family has had to take a bit of a back seat to my parents and my schooling. So, we were going on this trip to reconnect, to play again and to just love our time together. My sister, who had never been to Disney and who helped me take care of my parents, decided to come along for the first half of our trip. That meant that we had to do as much as we could while she was there but when she left we would be able to slow down considerably.

Allow me to introduce my family...

Then there's my sister... Mary.

We had a total of 11 nights planned (Wed, 10/25 - Sun, 11/5). The first seven night we stayed at Pop Century then after my sister went home we moved to an one-bedroom Savannah facing room at Kidani Village. We just had to get to Orlando....

The plan was to leave work about noon on Wednesday, however we had a tremendous fall storm the day before we left. Living right on the coast of Lake Superior we experience some wacky weather in the fall. We were having 60mph winds with 35-40ft. waves on the lake. School had been canceled that day due to the wind. What do you do when the wind is raging, trees are falling and you are trying to get ready to leave the next day for WDW? You use up whatever food is left in the house and put on The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Happy Windsday!

The next morning we woke up to major damage in our neighborhood. However, we were very lucky. Our block was ok, school was back on and we were ready to head to Walt Disney World!

After a good busy day at work, we all hopped into the van and went to pick up Jonah from school and head out to the airport.

We were lucky that all the flights were on time and scheduled to depart. Flights went smooth and the magic started when we got on our connection from Detroit to Orlando. Rob surprised us with Delta comfort. Extra leg room? Umm, yes! This 6ft. woman was so happy! It was late night (we got in about 11pm) but everyone was doing well and we were so excited to be back HOME.

We had a great ride to Pop, but were amazed at all the construction happening on property. We had done online check-in so we didn't have to stop at the lobby so that made things really quick. We did use Touring Plans "Room Finder" and requested a certain room. It worked! We didn't get the exact room we asked for, but it was only like two doors down. Thank you Touring Plans! We did ask for a joining room however OR a room close to Mary's. We weren't able to get that though. She was on the other side but not extremely far away. We dropped our things off in our room and brought Mary over to hers. It was time for bed... we were going to try to sleep in, but something told us we would be too excited to sleep.

Coming up.... Day One - turkeys on property, some tears and Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.

Great start to your TR! My sister and I had a very similar experience with our parents. My sister and I took a Disney trip, just the 2 of us. It was exactly what we needed to be able to recharge and heal from all the trauma! So glad you were able to have such a wonderful time. Looking forward to reading the rest.

Thurs 10/26

The plan was to sleep in, walk around the resort and casually head over to Magic Kingdom for some fun with low crowds. We had tickets for MNSSHP for that night, but to add on another "day" onto our park tickets wasn't much at all so why stay away!? Ok, this was the PLAN. What reality was, was that Rob and I woke up about 6am (went to bed about 1:30am) and laid there waiting for Jonah to wake up. It was just like Christmas morning when he was a little one. Rob and I would be up waiting for him to get up and that would be the morning he would decide to sleep in. We waited what seemed like an eternity and finally - Rob coughed loud. On purpose. With that, Jonah was up and we pretended he woke us up. haa
We were dressed and had already texted Mary to see if she was up. She was! So, we planned on meeting in the lobby at 8:30am. As we headed into the cafeteria, we spotted a turkey. Yup, you read right - a stinkin turkey! Now, we live practically in Canada. The closest "city" is Green Bay (3hrs away). We have had cougars, a bear and frequently deer run in our neighborhood. But, we have never had a turkey. Mary's husband hunts them and will spend hours making turkey calls to lure them in. Who would have thought that we just had to go to Pop Century. It was very fuuny.

After grabbing a couple things to snack on we were stopped by our 9yr old shopping wacko. He normally hates to shop. But at Disney... we can't get him out of shops. We hadn't been awake for more than two hours and he already had found some pins to buy. (Serenity now!)

We hopped on the bus and away we were! We arrived about 10am and began taking care of a few housekeeping things (getting a locker for our costumes, my husband got himself an annual pass (it saved us a good chunk of money at restaurants), and got all our maps). Mary was so excited, we were ALL excited - not only for ourselves but for Mary as well. It's always so great to watch someone walk into Magic Kingdom their very first time.

Mary is my oldest sister, there is 18yrs difference between us. That being said, we are the closest. She is very creative, loves colors, flowers, creativity, music, fanfare, things that are over the top and excitement. So, I knew Disney was going to be a slam dunk for her. She also does not keep her excitement to herself. She is like a kid in that respect. The "oh my", "wow", "Oh how beautiful", "look at that" expressions were already going off like the finale of Happily Ever After. The thought of her going down Main St. made me a little nervous. I wasn't sure if she was going to be overwhelmed and just shut down, or would she cry (that's what I do), or frankly - would she implode? I wasn't sure but I was excited to see.

We walked through the tunnel and the music was the first thing to hit ,then the colors. "OH MY GOODNESS!!!!", she kept saying over and over. The smile on her face was stuck and I'm pretty sure because she couldn't close her mouth, that she began drooling. Then we rounded the corner by the confectionary and there she was, Cinderella's Castle. Now, I'm not sure if anyone ever watched Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life" where a large man at a restaurant eats so much that he explodes. That's kinda what happened. She was yelling about the colors and the balloons - her camera was flying everywhere, she was stopping in the middle of crowds to take pictures of balloons, windows, costumes, light fixtures, you name it and it was caught on film. She was so overwhelmed she exploded. I think if she had a full bladder she would have peed. Thank goodness we had taken care of that prior.

But Main Street was as beautiful as ever...

My apologies on how long it has taken me to post an entry. My son's baseball schedule has taken over the summer so far! Let's see, last time I posted we were headed into Adventureland. I can practically hear the drums now...

The first time I had ever went to DW (I was 16yrs old) I was with my parents. Just like any other kid, my dream had always been to go there. We didn't take a lot of trips and I never thought it would be something we would do. Walking down Main Street was unreal! Of course we all know that feeling and can relate to that "outer body" experience. The first attraction we went on was Pirates. I can still hear my mom screaming when we went down the first drop and the squeeze of her hand as she grasped for anything. So, Pirates has a special place in my heart and that's why it continues to be the first attraction that I go on even to this day.

The wait time was at about 20min. - not bad for Pirates! As we stood in line we played "Heads Up" and anxiously waited climbing aboard and delving into the story of Pirates! What a great attraction, but man that gift shop!!! As a mom of a 9yr old boy, that gift shop is brutal!!! We had the talks before we went on our trip about budgets and spending money and smart spending decisions. We were feeling good about his understanding and his plans for how he wanted to spend that money. Then that darn Pirates gift shop happened! You know parents!!!! It's like trying to get your kid through a mine field. We emerged outside of it sweaty, shaking and with a little less patience - however he didn't buy anything. Or wait... did he? Crap, I can't remember. It was so stressful.

All of that work got our tummies going and it was time for our 11:45am reservation at The Liberty Tree Tavern. We had never eaten there and had heard so many great things about it from everyone. So, we had to check it out. We were seated quickly and before we knew it we had ordered and were on our second glass of iced tea.

The food was so great! Jonah ordered the mac and cheese, Mary had the meatloaf and Rob and I ordered the Colony Salad. Boy, was that salad great! It hit the spot on a warm fall day

Liberty Square was beautiful as always! We enjoyed taking in the sights and having fun.

2017-10-26_15-51-08_274.jpg

We made our way into Fantasyland and we had to take in the Carousel (it's a fave of my sons). All of us hopped up on our horses and for the duration of the ride were brought back into childhood. Walt suceeded - we weren't on the park bench watching our child play. We were playing right along side of him. The laughter was wonderful. (Of course the climb on the horse and off the horse wasn't as fluid as when we were young but we did it.)

The hot sun was beating down and we were ready to rest a bit. Plus the Fantasy Parade would be starting in about 45min. So, we decided to grab some spots on the curb in the hub and wait for the parade. Mary flitted around taking pictures while I held our seats. This is one of the best parades, I love the costumes and the creative use of floats! It's mind boggling to me how people can think of these things! It's just amazing to me.

The last float past by and the crowds began to thin out - we grabbed our things and started to look around for what we were going to do next. We looked up from our phones and saw Mary standing there - mouth wide open, dazed and just crying! She looked at me and through her tears said, "Now I understand. I get it. I know why you love it here so much".

Tomorrowland next.......

We dried our tears and headed over to Tomorrowland where we went to "Infinity and Beyond" with Buzz Lightyear then climbed in our spaceship and explored Space Mountain.

Then it was time for a family favorite.... the Peoplemover! It was great to sit and relax while taking in the sights and feeling the breeze.

IMG_2944.JPG

We knew that it was getting to be time to get ready for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. So, as were zipped around Tomorrowland we came up with our plan.... take the train to Main Street, put in our order for dinner using mobile ordering and go to the lockers and change into our costumes. The plan was set and we were off! But first - we had to take advantage of the short wait at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
IMG_2952.JPG

Ok, now it was time to hatch the plan. Next time.... MNSSHP, meeting new friends from across the pond and sore feet!!!

Just love, love your report. Your Sister's reactions are just great! It's so good to see other adults having some "kids" fun. My husband is 71 and I am 68 and we ride all the rides, and we are kids again at WDW! It's such a happy place to be. I'm so glad you got to go after your difficult couple of years caring for your parents, and going to grad school. Wow, that is so awesome and so much work. Can't wait to hear more. (I know about boy's ball schedules in the summer. Our grandson travels all over the state of Mn. which keeps us all busy)

Eager to hear more...11 nights would be wonderful!
Thank you. Eleven nights was a dream and something we knew we would never do again, at least until my son was grown. I never thought I would have enough to do for 10 days, but even after 11 nights, I was not ready to go home.

Yes! Healing was what we experienced, at least to a degree. The laughter sure helped u. Taking care of both dying parents, losing them and getting my degree was the hardest thing I have ever done but I have grown so much because of it. Our trip was a great way to celebrate life and accomplishment.
