Trip Report When can we do this again? A Fractal family Odyssey. *COMPLETED*

Definition of odyssey:

• : a long journey full of adventures
  
  
• : a series of experiences that give knowledge or understanding to someone

Not too long ago I had a lot of doubt this trip would ever happen. The financial cost of higher education, the fact my wife Val wanted to go anywhere BUT Disney, the crazy and conflicting schedules of the kids, made the odds of keeping our 2-year WDW trip tradition a large long-shot. But maybe things do happen for a reason...

A great deal came our way and before we knew it we were on our way back to the World. Not without a major sacrifice however as my eldest daughter Alexandra had to miss the trip due to her schooling ( she graduates this Friday as an Registered Nurse!). She is a bit of a kindred spirit to me with a personality closer to mine than the other two, so I knew I would miss her dearly on the trip.

Here she is at Christmas with my Mom (Yia-Yia).

Speaking of Yia-yia; she will join us again at WDW! We had a great time with her on our 2013 trip at the Poly. We would meet up with her, my Sister Marina (here with me)...

at the Yacht Club on the second leg of our journey. The first part of our trip took us to my in-law's (Al & Sue) who moved to Florida (Tampa - St. Pete area) last year. They would also join us at WDW!

Here they are from a 50th anniversary party we had for them last Winter...

It was early evening Thursday July 20th when we began our Odyssey. My good friend Wally picked us up to take us to the Baltimore (BWI) airport.

Excitement was building for our trip but the real Disney excitement would come later.

Sterg and Toni occupied the back seat. They were almost late for the pickup as they decided a last second Starbucks run was in order. Sterg ended up paying for that about an hour later as his bladder protested strongly.

Val was next to me and could barely contain her enthusiasm.

Not only was she not fully in favor of another Disney trip, she was (rightfully) concerned with the potential problems, complications, and stress of merging these 3 parts of the family together in the already chaotic environment of managing reservations, room assignments, getting to the parks, fastpasses and dinner plans. I had much of the same worries, which were also amplified by the fact Yia-Yia and Al would be using electric scooters during our time at the World. But hey, it's Disney, what could go wrong?

This ride is kinda growing on me, although wearing a mouthpiece should be mandatory. Al decided to wait this one out.

We actually did have fun. Laughed a lot, screamed a little and all without damaging any major internal organ!

All the G forces we experienced helped to build an appetite. I recommended Flame Tree so we went there while Marina and Courtney went for Pizza. We ate together in one of the great little pavilions behind Flame Tree. I really enjoy this area; it was on my photo list for this trip.

I learned from the ever knowledgable @Tuvalu that each pavilion has a different "predator and prey" theme. Ours was Gator (croc?) and fish.

Marina left us early to go back to YC and round up Yia-Yia and Mia. I kept taking photos.

There's a "lookout" area that makes a great spot for portraits.

After lunch and our photo session we split up. Toni and Court wanted to ride Everest again, so I decided to escort Sue and Al to something I hadn't done in a long time.

I'm still a few pages back but have to say I'm loving the pictures and the drama. Can't help but laugh at the broken shoe, Yia Yia quotes and the struggles of holding a group together. Did have to zoom past some pics of SDMT and Soarin' I have waited this long with no spoilers so I'll have to revisit those in a few months.

Dinoland. The land everyone love to hate.

There is certainly reason for this; so much potential wasted on a kooky money saving backstory. It also has no real thematic connection with the rest of the park.

Maybe someday that raze it and start over.

That's not to say it's all bad, we have become fans of Dinosaur and this would be our first of several rides on the ride formally know as "Countdown to Extinction".

This was Al & Sue's first time on Dinosaur. Hold on, it can get a little bumpy out there.

The darkness and crazy violent motion of the rover make this the pinnacle of photographic challenge. I debated even trying to take a photo inside the ride. In our 2015 day trip I failed miserably and came close of few times to knocking a tooth out with my camera. But hey, I didn't come all the way to Walt Disney World to surrender! I was game and determined to capture a decent image inside Dinosaur.

So I managed 2 not terrible shots. Getting better.

For the first time after riding Dinosaur, we took the path into the gift shop.

I'm a sucker for details. Even in Dinoland.

Toni and Courtney wanted to go on Primeval Hurl. Only a 20 minute wait which ended up closer to 10 minutes.

I've never actually been there. We had never gone to AK before our trip last summer and Dinosaur was closed for refurbishment, so we didn't bother even going there, other than restuarantosaurus because they had fries, which was the only thing DS would eat. It's kind of cool to see pictures of it. What did Al and Sue think of it, as first timers?

I'll never forget the first time I walked through there (years ago). I kept thinking, "what the heck?!" Thought it must have been just me--that I didn't "get" it.

It wasn't that I hated the area, as I could see that some creativity went into it; but I just thought that it was completely out of place THERE.

With the girls getting their thrill ride fix I decided it was a great opportunity to revisit a trail that I remember enjoying so much. Al and Sue were game and for the record seemed to really be enjoying the morning.

Dragon - where is the Breaker of Chains? This Komodo is pretty young and small. About 10-15 years ago we saw a huge Komodo, maybe 3X this size, in Myrtle Beach behind a big glass enclosure. Later that year that dragon bit her trainer. The bacteria in it's saliva took hold and the trainer died months later after an agonizing battle.

Never got a clear view of the Giant Bats, only a "PG" view.

The grounds of this trail are beautiful; like a scene from a movie. Of all the trails in AK, in fact in all of AK itself I think this trail takes you to another place more than any other.

I was thoroughly enjoying myself, taking plenty of photos. Sue was joining me with her new point and shoot. She has an artistic eye and is getting more into photography. She took some great photos here as well.

The attention to detail, the imagination, the commitment and effort to bring something like this to life (and maintain it) is a very big reason I love WDW. As corny as it sounds, it really stimulates the senses for me. I think the slow nature of our walk through (vs a slow jog with the kids) fostered a better appreciation.

We were near mid-day and with the temperature and humidity high, my hopes of seeing the tigers was low. They were not visible in the first few spots, but we did find the female "cat napping."

I believe I just read she is pregnant as they have been trying to breed them. Just to add to the layer of amazement this park offers.

A little sad that I have to scroll through most of your AK pictures without looking at them. Since were going to be there soon I like to be surprised and take in everything the first time seeing it. I haven't been through Gorilla Falls or Maharajah Trek in 10 years! I will have to make it a point to come back to your report when we get back.

Also I have to ask. Do you still have all your teeth?

Still laughing at your "Frat House" review

I appreciate your beautiful pictures of AK.

We've only visited AK twice and have to admit it is not a fave. But, that is probably because we treat it as a half day park and are jogging to fit in all the main attractions. We left it off the schedule of our last trip as it was opening weekend for Pandora and again not a favorite.

We are heading back next month sans kids and because of your pics I really feel that we have been missing out! I'm really looking forward to soaking up the details and possibly gaining more respect for AK.

I hope it was nothing too serious with Sterg and he was able to enjoy the rest of the trip!!

I was hoping I wasn't the only one who would get something out my hundreds of questions about photography. Fractal and some others gave some great advise and awesome links that I still go back and look at. I hope you'll post some pics soon. Mine are still a work in progress but definitely better than when I started.

The firework photos are beautiful! My hubby actually asked me why I was taking the camera at all. I always end up passing the camera bag off to him and he hates to carry it. No way he will tote a tripod for me but I am going to try the trash can trick this year. Love the story about you and Sterg. I remember those too cool teenage years when my son was about 14. He is back to posing with characters with me without me having to bribe him with 20 bucks lol.

You have to be a little flexible with the trashcan but it does work. Yes, eventually they become human again.

She's really enjoying it, when she has the time. She's not as comfortable with Lightroom as she'd like, but that's a function of the time she's had available. I'm concerned that seeing your shots may lead to some more expensive practice!

LR takes some time to master. I'm still learning new things.

Poor Sterg.... I feel the pain. Julia and I had to make that shuttle trip once - before my days of writing TR's. lol It was NOT fun and NOT covered by our insurance! I hope all turned out ok. Loving your TR!

The trails are always tough to make a commitment to, but each time I do I never regret it. Yes, I still have my teeth!

With Pandora, it's no longer a 1/2 day park especially if you add a show or two and a trail or two. Sterg is ok but it was worrying at times. Enjoy your trip!

Fingers crossed that you were also able to take your awesome photography skills to Pangani Forest Exploration Trail.

Near the end of the trail is the aviary that will get you very up close with some interesting and exotic birds. Just make sure not to stand too long underneath one.

While the rest of the trail was very accommodating, the aviary was the most challenging for Al to maneuver his ECV.

The CM in the aviary was very knowledgable and willing to talk and ask questions.

Maharajah trail was a big hit! Al & Sue enjoyed it and it was at a nice pace.

All the walking in the heat however had me looking for some kind of relief (a bit more than a water fountain).

I LOVE those Maharajah pictures! Although DAK is my least favorite park overall, I love that section of it so much that my room is actually loosely themed around it (and the Morocco pavilion at Epcot). Those pictures definitely remind me of why I drew the initial inspiration!

Hmmm, what would be a dark, cold, place in AK where we could cool off and get entertained while not having to wait in a long standby line?

I know; Tough to be a Bug! The in-laws fell in line and followed my lead.

On our way there we passed King Louie (or rather he passed us). He must have escaped from The Jungle Cruise.

I'm sure there was a "handler" somewhere but we didn't see one. It wouldn't be the last time we would see a character strolling through the parks "independently".

Based on my recollection, it appeared they moved many of the movie posters outside the tree.

We were put in the section for ECV's which is in the back of the theater. Al decided to stay in his. As the show began I realized he would not experience many of the effects, I felt bad I didn't recognize that sooner and give him a head's up. Then I wondered if we would miss out because between our seats and the next row in front of us was a sizable space for people to walk across and exit the theater. I was pleasantly surprised that we did get the water and air blast effects.

Hopper was ornery as ever.

I always liked this show. A big reaction from the crowd is a guarantee. Al & Sue seem pleased so we headed to our next stop on the Son-In-Law guided tour.

The Tree of Life - a structure with animals hand carved by artists from all over the World. Still amazes me.

Time for a 2 week safari. The standby said 40 minutes - Ok we can do this!

Simba 1 - a leftover from a bygone KS era.

So an hour later we were here and not moving particularly fast.

Seems like good advise.

An hour and 10 minutes later we reach the spot where the ECV's break off from the regular line. There is a special truck with the seating designed to accommodate handicapped visitors, but it was full. We waited another 15 minutes for the next one. Once loaded on we waited yet another 15 minutes for other handicapped groups to join us. We are now fully 1 hour longer than the wait time posted when we entered the line before we started our safari. 1 hour and 40 minutes in a hot, crowded line. Not too many happy campers in my little tour group.

Our driver was very nice but was in training (she had someone by her side helping her with the narrative).

Hippos are cool! Most of the time you can just barely see their ears and snout above water so this was a treat.

This really was not a treat.

Africa painted dogs. We were told they were the best hunters in Africa because they never stop chasing their prey which finally succumb to exhaustion.

Wildebeests just don't look particularly smart. Scar used that to his advantage.

Yeah, I have big horns.

and I have a long neck. Another very cool animal.

The elephants were out and about.

As were these shrimp eating birds. (but I guess they're always out).

And way, way in the back was the cheetah. I had to severely crop this one.

Unfortunately the other big game cat was a no show. I was happy with the driver slowing down enough to get some good shots. She did great for a trainee!

After we exited I felt compelled to complain about our wait. I know there are so many circumstances that can cause a delay but I still had to get it off my chest. I went to the CM at the front of the entrance and told him we waited an hour longer than the posted wait time. He apologized and said he would tell his manager. I didn't get FP or such but I wasn't looking for one.

AK was much more crowded than earlier.

My favorite show at WDW. It would not fit into our schedule however; at least not on this day.

Before long, it was time to travel a few lightyears away to meet the others in Pandora for our Banshee flight lessons...

Your pics of King Louie and Hopper...WOW. What settings?

I was using my 85mm 1.8 ( similar focal length to your 50mm 1.8 which is full frame equivalent of 75mm). King Louie - ISO 100, 1/500 sec, f/4.5. You'll notice I missed focus a bit on the first shot as he surprised me.

For Hopper, same lens - ISO 12,800, 1/125 sec, f/3.5. In 2015 I got some good shots of him with my NEX-7 (same sensor as your camera), but had to shoot at f/1.8, ISO 1600, 1/80. You'll get some blurry shots but definitely some keepers. Here's one of them for me.

Your photo of Hopper is beautiful! I really enjoy all your photos but this is definitely one of my favorites. It's Tough to be a Bug is a must do for me every AK visit for me.

That extra hour of wait time for Kilimanjaro Safari must have been tough in that heat! I get that wait times are estimations but that wasn't even close. Looks like it was a successful safari though, so that's good.
