I could have sworn that someone said the steam was interfering with a sensor, which was the reason for turning it off.

That was the "fog" effect in the caverns at the top before the first track switch.

They were thinking of giving you an explanation of why you stopped and why the track changes as you move back the same way you came. He rips up the track either in front or directly behind you.
