What's up with Disney's wi-fi?

Does anyone find that when you use your phone on Disney's wi-fi, your battery drains like crazy? That happened to me my last trip in January, and I know it wasn't my phone cause I'd just gotten a 6S the day before.

That's why I don't use their WiFi. I just use the cell network. I still have unlimited WiFi with AT&T so no biggy to stay off of Disney's WiFi. My battery lasts all day at WDW by not using it and I have an iPhone 6s as well. ;)

Same here! Thankfully my wife and I have 24 gb of data thanks to a promotion verizon was doing. But it's ridiculous using their wi-fi, my battery literally drained 30% while my phone was in my pocket!

Why does their wi-fi drain the battery so bad I wonder?

Cell phones are programmed to search the airwaves, looking for a signal. If that signal drops, then the phone will go into overdrive, searching for a wi-fi signal that it can no longer find. Disney's coverage is so spotty that there are many areas that have no coverage. Thus, your phone is working extra hard to find a link.

Yep so I usually turn off the automatic search for Wifi feature when out in public anywhere. If i need to connect I'll turn Wifi on to search. Saves a lot of battery life. :)

Wifi at WDW has been pretty lousy as long as I can remember. Signal strength can be very spotty depending on which park you are in or even which part of the park. Some of the resorts are just as bad. Disney wants to to rely on MDE for FPs, maps, ressies, etc, but they have done little or nothing to increase their wifi bandwidth and coverage. I, too, rely on my data and have enough to get me by, but I still have to wonder why I have to pay for something (my data) that is suppose to be covered by the resort wifi.

True..but mine only comes out to check for fast pass times and reservations etc etc so it mostly stays in my purse or my hubby's backpack. ;)
Yeah....I was half joking because the app is so useful now for additional fast passes. I just use cell data. Wifi in the large an area with that many people is just not going to be reliable.

I leave mine in airplane mode unless I truly need to check something on the horrid Disney app. Still allows for photos, but doesn't constantly look for a signal when in and out of attractions where reception can be poor. Saves the battery big time.

Yes
I haven't been to Disney in a few years and I'm surprised to hear that they WiFi in the parks are bad. I would think that since My Disney Experience is an important tool to use while visiting the parks, the WiFi would be better.

The problem you run into with this is most newer phones these days have as good, if not better cameras than the typical pocket cameras these days..
I use a DSLR.

Also, most photographers will tell you cell phone cameras cannot compete with a decent camera with real optical zoom, even if it's a point and shoot.

Cell phone cameras are so much better now, but they still have 0 optical zoom and really struggle in low light situations.

I brought my laptop with me during our last trip, in case there was some business I had to attend to in the evenings, and I found the WiFi was marginally better, on the laptop at Pop Century, than it was on my phone-but not by much. Speeds were very inconsistent, but it was hard to complain, as it should be expected, given the sheer number of people sharing the signal.

Yeah I knew you had to be somewhat joking but was just throwing that out there. Our vacations are no phone zones as my hubby is horrible at home when it comes to his phone! Haha! :p:cat:
