What's the Deal with Hollywood Studios?

I personally love DHS. On my last trip, the park really grew on me. It's a great place to spend the morning. Get a few rides on TSMM and RnRC. A few ToT in there along w/new Star Tours, Voyage of Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Muppet Vision - all great fillers while waiting for Fastpass to be valid.

And Fantasmic! is the greatest show (IMO) that Disney has ever had.

I think EPCOT could really use a new E-Ticket. Take some heat off of Soarin' and Test Track.

My biggest problem with DHS isn't the lack of new attractions- its the lack of cohesion. The park doesn't know what it is anymore. It is missing all the edutainment that Disney does better than everyone else. Ever since it stopped being an actual studio and the animation dept was shipped out of town, it has lost its identity. Part of what made DHS (then MGM) so great was that it had thrills combined with fascinating behind the scenes type stuff.

It really is a random assortment of stuff anymore... AI, Muppets, Pixar, Star Wars, Playhouse Disney...

I just think it really needs to figure out what it wants to be first then we can worry about it getting new attractions.

Great first post!

I agree completely. If Hollywood Studios is going to be more than just a dumping ground for attractions that don't fit into the other three parks then Disney needs to figure out what they want the park to be in the 21st century.

I know the negotiations for Muppet Land at DHS died a while ago, but maybe they could reopen negotiations about that? With a new Muppet Movie coming soon, I think expanding the Muppets at DHS would be a great investment.

Plus they still have Star Wars to bank on, I really wish they'd do more with that section. At least a Cantina restraunt and maybe a mini-Skywalker Studios? I just feel there's so much more they can do with Star Wars that would greatly benefit Lucas and Disney.

And then you have Pixar Place. Toy Story Mania is great, but with all the lovable Pixar franchises there are, there's so many possibilities for attractions of any caliber.

Just my thoughts and musings.

Agreed, dhs and ak are in desperate need of more rides. ak much more than dhs.

Ak can use a nice lion king dark ride, as well as a bambi dark ride or pocahontas river adventure or something. This park can definitly benefit from having some sort of water ride like splash.

DHS should close down indy and replace it with the indy ride in dl. They should definitly clone the carsland ride, while the area might not be on the same scale as dca's they should definitly tear down the backlot and atleast include the full ride. monsters coaster should definitly happen and hist should definitly be rethemed. They should also create a new thrill ride not tied to any film like rnr or tot, make something thrilling thats original. Also if toontown had to be torn down in mk, they should definitly make a real toontown in dhs.

Epcot can benefit from adding new rides in world showcase as well as futureworld. Add the mt. fuji mountain ride. Give morocco some sort of ride as well as any other country that doesnt have much to do. As for future world, tear down uoe and replace it with 2 new dark rides. Give imagination its full refurb. To me, ms and test track are two of the most underwhelming e-tickets on property, tear them suckers down and bring back world of motion and horizons! Those were two staples of the epcot park, and they shouldve stayed there, they shouldnt have been sacrificed to make way for ms and tt. Ms and tt shouldve been ADDED TO the park not replacing 2 originals. That was 1 of the worst decisions tdo made in the 90s.

Well said! That's exactly the reason why the park has gotten so stale like I mentioned above. The park now feels like "Random franchises with a vague hollywood and movie studios theme."

I really kind of wish it would go back to a working studio. It added such a new dimension to the park.

In my opinion, DHS is at a crossroads. I love the park but it really lacks a cohesive, unified theme. My favorite area of the park is sunset boulevard, it really grew on me last trip. I think its the best land of the park besides the "main street." They should really theme the park to different streets or lands in Hollywood or movies. (I know they kind of have this going, but they should really amp it up.) Have Lucas Way, keep Pixar Place, fix Animation Courtyard and add stuff to the back of the park. Since it isnt a Studio anymore, focus on hollywood. The purpose of the park should be two fold: to glorify movies and to celebrate the golden age of hollywood. I can see the beginnings and rough outline of this.

There is so much they could do and should do at DHS that its mindspinning, instead they go with inferior things that are past their prime like Idol! And not to start another hat thread, but I thought it had been said that there were plans to get rid of that garish tacky thing in 2011 I thought? Or move it at least.

I personally think they should just move it to that new Art and Animation Hotel. Would look great there, and would stop being such an eyesore at DHS.

Yes!!! That would be perfection wouldnt it?
It would. But unfortunately I don't know what the layout of it is, so I have no idea exactly there would be room for it there, or how much of a fiasco it would be to deconstruct and transport it there in the first place.

This feels like a conversation that keeps coming up, and every year goes by without Disney correcting these problems. They plopped LMA in a really random spot with no real integration into anything surrounding it, they keep the Backlot Tour on life support when they really just need to pull the plug, and the one good, new thing they added, again, was simply stuck into an awkward corner of the park behind the Great Movie Ride.

They need to take a hint from the DCA redesign and learn that when they add new attractions, they shouldn't just stick them into whatever strange, arbitrary layout from a previous era that never really made sense in the first place. They need to take old buildings down and move land around to start from scratch to create something that looks nice, is easy to navigate, and is theme appropriate.

an idea!

Personally I'd like to see them do "Star Wars Weekends" once a month and include the fireworks show that they presented during the celebration at the "Last trip to Endor" party. That was amazing, and would be a great draw for us locals.

Yes
DHS would fare well (going with the "Hollywood" theme, not the Disney theme so don't flame me) by adding:

- Marvel 'stuff' - yes I know US has Marvel stuff but Disney owns it now so screw 'em :p
- George Lucas stuff (Star Wars, Indy, etc)
- Pixar Stuff
- ABC stuff

Heck, bring back the MMC and film it at DHS! I miss the 'working studio' stuff.

Then Universal would sue for breaking contract. Disney just legally can't have the Marvel characters used in the parks. Yet. Wait for the contract to run out, and see what happens from there.

My son and I were at AK one day last week. Did the Safari ride, roamed around thru some of the pathways looking at animals, and rode Dinosaur and left by l0:30 to Epcot. Its definitely not a full day park.
