What's so great about refillable mugs anyway?

It just seems like they'd be the biggest pain in the neck, and really drag down your vacation. Every time you want a drink you have to get the mug, walk it allllll the way to the food court (which at many resorts is quite a hike), then walk it allllll the way back to your room and wash it out.

Anytime I've travelled with someone who bought a refillable mug it made things so difficult. We'd be all ready to hit the parks, but then have to stand around waiting for 15 minutes for the person to bring their mug back to the room.

At the end of a long day in the parks you want to get a drink at the food court, but before you can - another hike to the room to grab the mug is in order. :hammer:

Even if you pay for 2 drinks a day out of pocket for 8 days (around $30), the mug only saves you $17. It doesn't seem worth the hassle at all for such little savings. What's $17 compared to the $2,000+ you're spending?

Mugs, to buy or not to buy. I guess it is just a matter of preference but I get one because I will use it at least twice a day. I just carry it in my back pack instead of walking back to the room. I will generally drink water in the parks so I will treat myself to a soda at night. I also have this weird thing about vacations. I try to do as little work as possible, that includes making my own coffee.

Are we allowed to use the refillable mug from a previous year?
We(6 or us) all have our mugs from last year. Can we take them back and use them again? By the way, got more use out of them then we thought we would.
Especially in the a.m.

Officially the mugs are supposed to only be used on the trip you purchased them and at the resort you purchased them at. That being said, about half the people I see using refillable mugs are using what appear to be older mugs or mugs from a different resort. I've never seen a CM approach a guest and tell them they couldn't use a mug and CM's are clearly aware of all the people using older mugs. So do with that information what you will.

I guess we're in the minority here, but we love the mugs. We only get to go to WDW every few years and having the mugs brings a little bit of the magic back home. Plus, they're durable, diswasher safe, and plastic...which works out for me because I'm a clutz and tend to drop breakable things.

It's true though that we only used them about 2-3 times per day, but it was nice at the end of a long day at the parks to make a cup of tea or cocoa in them to bring back to the a/c room. If you see em and you feel like you have to have one...buy it!

I'm with you 100%! My wife and kids use our Pop ones daily back home here that we bought on our first trip back in 2005. They have lasted through countless turns in the dishwasher and still are in great shape.

Even though we aren't huge pop or coffee drinkers, we still used them for lemonade and hot cocoa and that, plus the kids love the frozen coke icees or whatever they are called at Pop! Can't wait to get new ones next March! :sohappy:

I tend to set my alarm so I can make it to any park with EMH in the a.m. So, I go have breakfast early. I tend to drink lots of teas and POP makes good tea. :slurp: Anyway, I have definitely gotten my moneys worth out of my mugs. Well, maybe not this past trip. I bought two mugs simply because they had different colored handles. I think they make good & cheap souveners - or however it is you spell it!

I'm only ever at the resort first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Not really time to get more than 2 drinks. (And of course I drink while I'm at the parks, but I was only talking about the resorts, since that's where you use the mugs ;))

Ahhhh, sorry, thought you meant all day =]

You needn't be obnoxious about it, I'm not saying it's higher priority for everyone, just a suggestion on where to cut corners for people who don't consider it to be as important as other things.

Just remember that a lot of people consider a vacation a time to splurge and throw away all their cares - including their financial ones. I know when I'm on vacation the last thing I'm thinking about is cutting corners and making sacrifices to save money. I would rather just enjoy myself and do what I want to do.

Most likely the "family of 5" who all order drinks are ordering drinks because they want drinks. People who want water order water. People who want soda order soda. It's not really a matter of ignorance.

LOL, I try to do as little as possible too, but WDW only makes coffee in 2 or 3 places. Everywhere else they make this brown liquid they call coffee, but it's not coffee. :D

That is also a deciding factor on the mug for me.

1) I don't like carrying it back and forth to the room

2) I am one of those cellphone/wallet/camera good to go people. No backpack, no pack, no bag, nada. I have been known to have the smallest things sent back to the resort when I buy them, just because I don't want to carry (or loose) it. So there is no backpack to put a mug in.

3) I am not a big soda drinker either. I would rather avoid the carbs from the soda and reserve them for more important things, like beer.

4) If they made a refillable mug for use at the poolside bar, I would be all over that like stink on a monkey.

Ain't that the truth. Those three places are Kona Cafe, Boma and the Kona island coffee bar. Earl of Sandwich also has a pretty good Kona coffee as well.

That brown liquid is Nescafe, and yes it slightly resembles coffee. I also do not like to carry stuff either but the older I get, the more I seem to need. Anyone know why disney cannot serve a good cup of coffee? Preferably Dunkin Donuts coffee.

A lot of it has to due with the brand of the coffee but there are a bunch of little details that can make or break a cup of coffee. Brewing temperature, water quality, quantity of beans, coarseness of grounds, etc can all significantly effect how coffee tastes. When you mass produce coffee for a food court setting being able to control those factors kind of goes out the window hence the crappy coffee. I am just guessing but I would say the two biggest problems at WDW are the coffee beans used and more importantly poor tasting, unfiltered tap water. You can buy the best $40/lb 100% Kona coffee beans in the would and ruin it by just using tap water.

True. It also sits in those big whatchamacalits for God knows how long. I was more or less doing some wishful thinking by hoping that I could get a nice french pressed cup of coffee everytime I went to a food court, which is impossible.:)

I was looking closely at the giant grey Nescafe dispenser of depression two weeks ago.

I noticed somthing about it. The "coffee" that comes out is under pressure, and if you look closely seems to come out of a mixer nozzle, much like a soda fountain. It appears to be a coffee and water mix that comes out into your cup (or refill mug)

Thats when I did some digging. Nescafe makes a bag-in-box coffee concentrate, just like a BIB soda concentrate.

The coffee does not sit and "cook" in those things, you are getting concentrated coffee syrup, mixed with hot water. - Bleah !

I don't understand why people on this board get so bent out of shape over other people re-using their mugs on different trips. Disney obviously doesn't really care, otherwise there would be strict enforcement of the policy. In reality the beverage itself costs what, a penny, to fill up the mug. I understand some people want to feel like good citizens, but really if your only complaint is that the mugs cost too much, just re-use them on subsequent trips. If Disney starts checking, then the worst that will happen is they'll say no, you can't use that mug any more. It's not as if you didn't already buy the mug from Disney.

Correct. It ranks right up there with that garbage they call iced tea that you get out of a soda fountain.

I guess I've learned my lesson about offering tips on these boards for those that do have to budget their trips.
