It is a mere shadow of what you experienced in 97.

Basically there is a preshow that takes you through the creation of a Disney character namely Mushu. This is done in a theater with a cast member interacting with a movie. After that you exit into a small gallery that has a lot of sketches and models from Meet the Robinson's. Next is the main part of the academy that contains a bunch of interactive displays. You can color characters, record the audio track for an animated short etc. You will commonly find the Incredibles doing meet n greets here and there are some Cars cardboard cutouts there as well. The best part of the academy is the Drawing studio. Here you will get instruction on how to draw a Disney character from a Disney artist. That will empty out into another small gallery similar to the Meet the Robinson's gallery. I believe Tinkerbell and Stitch are featured in that particular gallery. This will empty out into the Art of Disney store.

We just saw it for the first time on this last trip (Feb). It was kind of cute...very short. The CM working at the time seemed a little bored. They could definitely improve this attraction...especially if it was better in '97!!

The character models of Meet the Robinson are cool, as well as the learnng to draw a Disney character. However, the rest of the exhibit is fairly boring.
There is so much potential to do something great with this area I wish they would try to make some changes to it.

they tried to make this more like the Disney Animation pavilion at California Adventure, which is certainly spectacular. Unfortunately, they failed to realize that just moving some of the kiosks over is not the same as having the very cool theming at the DCA version. They had good intentions but fell short on budget.

Well, even though it isn't that impressive- my kids loved it. My DS and DD Loved being able to see the Incredibles and all the displays of movies. Maybe for adults it isn't that great, but my kids got a kick out of it (My DD was 7 and DS was 2 at the time...)

I enjoy the animation department. After the short show the meet and great with Disney artist is very kool. They've always been kind enough to answer any questions. It's a dying art. With computer artwork taking over it's sad to say the animation as we know it (Old people like myself...lol) from Disney's earlier pictures are going to be missed. Cinderella, Peter Pan, Robin Hood, Dumbo etc, those days are behind in todays art world. Now it's artwork like Monsters Inc, Cars, etc. I enjoy them but the computer does all the work. Not like the old days when artist worked with pencils and paint brushes and it took thousands and thousands of drawings to make one cartoon.
I tell everyone who is going to Disney that the animation show is a must see.

I wonder if they will have to change the Mushu movie since Chris Sanders is not a Disney employee anymore? The Magic of Disney Animation used to be much more interesting when they were actually doing animation there and you could see work in progress.

That was always my favorite in MGM, seeing all the animators in there, I went to school for animation, so it was a lifelong dream, I loved going there. Haven't been in awhile. That's prety sad that they haven't made it an amazing attraction... I mean as they say "it all started with a mouse" The essence and true roots of Disney all are from animation. Of course it is all about the rides mostly, but this should be made into a real jewel as it is so important to the memory of Walt and the art of animation old and new.

ok I will step down from my soapbox now... :p

To be fair, the computer doesn't do all the work. If you want to see an example, look at something along the lines of Backyardigans compared to, say, Finding Nemo. Pixar isn't the best because they have stronger computers, they're the best because they have stronger talent. The computer's a tool, not an artist.

Y'know what, that's a good question. To be honest, I'd doubt they would remove Chris, if only for the fact that his leaving the studio hasn't really been widely publicized. I doubt that the regular public even knows he left.

The problem with the Animation Tour is that before Feature Animation was shut down, this was an amazing, one-of-a-kind attraction. However, when they had to change it, they really screwed the pooch. Normally when an attraction gets changed, it gets "plussed". Well, the tour got "minused". Everything that was cool and unique was essentially stripped out of it in order to turn it into a California Adventure clone. It's a real shame.
I'm still holding out hope that someday, someone will come along with enough brains to return that building to its former greatness.
