This is probably kind of a stupid question, but I heard about this past Disney attraction, and I was wondering what it was?:hammer:

It was this fun little ride in Fantasyland. It's now the Pooh Playland (or at least a portion of it is). You would get into this submarine and go around the lagoon and see underwater seas of a scuba diver and mermaids and fish and stuff like that. I'm sure somebody else may be able to give you more details, since I was like 7 the last time I rode it:wave:

You basically hit the nail on the head. It was a fun ride, but not very popular anymore since most people don't even know the story...nobody reads the classics anymore. :(

It looked like a really great ride! I would have liked to ride it, but I wasn't born yet...I think! What year did it close? And, thanks everyone for all of the links!

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was a great ride based on one of Disney's best live action movies. You entered a submarine that looked similar to the one in the movie and you were actually under water while the sub moved around the lagoon. The highlight of the ride was when you caught a glimpse of the giant squid/octopus that attacked the Nautlius in the movie. There's a whole mess of "conspiracy" theories as to why the ride closed, most based on the cost of running the attraction. I asked about the ride's closure when I was on the "Keys to the Kingdom" tour and the answer I received made good sense. One was that the ride was not wheel chair accessible and I do remember having to go down a small flight of steps to get into the ride. Second was the danger factor. If there was a problem with the sub, or someone got seriously ill, there really was no way to get someone off the ride very quickly. Finally, it took forever to load and unload the submarines, so the lines got incredibly long. Back in 1995 I bought a CD-Rom called the Walt Disney World Explorer. I still use it all the time and it has some great pictures of the attraction. I think you still can still buy the CD-Rom online. Also, one little trivia note, I believe the organ in the Ball Room of the Haunted Mansion was the organ played by Captain Nemo in the movie "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." I hope this helps.

Even though I never got to ride it, I think that they should rebuild it, make it more safe, make it wheelchair accesible somehow, and have some really good special effects with the technology that we have today! Was it kind of scary? That was just an "off-the-wall" question, but you said that you caught a glimpse of the octopus/squid that attacked the sub in the movie. It seems really cool if it were still open. No one answered my first question though, is it going to kind of be like the submarine ride that they're building close to Matterhorn at Disneyland?

20K was hot (the A/C in the subs never worked right), smelly (you were sealed in a very small space with 36 other sweaty people) and boring (all you really saw were plastic fish on strings). The ride capacity was very low so the queue was always long. It closed in 1994, thank goodness.

I agree. My dad used to drag my brother and I on that ride every year since the park opened (I was 8 at the time). Boy, did we so NOT want to go! :( But back then, kids didn't have a choice, at least we didn't!! When I grew up, I made the mistake of taking my son on the ride a couple of years before it closed, he was two at the time, I think :veryconfu . Anyway, he HATED it........cried the whole time. I also video taped the whole ride.......why, I do not know. Since the ride closed, I have tried to watch the video, but STILL can't seem to sit through the thing  . Well, maybe I'll be able to sit through it in a few years.........like 10-20, who knows!!!

Interesting fact. One of the 20,000 league under the sea prop life savers from the ride cue now resides in the corner of the Voyage of the little mermaid vestebule where the performers enter the stage. It's not visuable to park guests. the techs swiped it when the ride was being dismanteld.

this has been posted before but there is a tribute to the 20,000 leagues inside poohs house on upper beam of the larger door.

My mom told me about this ride. From what I've heard from her and on this board, its a good thing it closed, it sounds pretty dinky and boring, and would only interest a three year old.

The Haunted Mansion in DL has the organ. WDW got a replica, I think.
