I am trying to remember what was on West Street @ MK? I barely have any memories of it before it was taken over by the Emporium. I know the Greenhouse was on it but I can't remember what else. Also why was it closed and could East Street have the same future? Martin? :)

You can see the change in these two photos...

I remember the barbershop and the magic shop. We still have a dragon mask purchased there, and my son got his first haircut at the barber's there. I also recall a flower shop, I think. I know there was a flower cart in the alleyway.

:D To start with, I think it was The Greenhouse, The Harmony Barber Shop and the Card Shop. I also thought about the New Century Clock Shop, but think this was actually on Main St USA. The Greenhouse apparently closed in 1984 to make way for the start of the Emporium shpopping mall.

By 1987 Disney Clothiers, Ltd. has taken the store on the north corner.

The Greenhouse was on the south side of West Street from 1971 til 1984.
On the north side, The Card Shop existed from 1971 til 1985. The name was changed to Hallmark Card Shop in 1979, but it was always sponsored by Hallmark. The card shop moved down by the Arcade and sponsorship was taken over by Gibson. (remember Frank Wells?)

The New Century was located roughly in the center of the block, facing Main Street from 1971 til 1986 when the Emporium swallowed it up. New Century was morphed into Uptown Jewelers across Main in 1986. At that time Uptown moved from it's original location to the south corner across from the current Market House. In it's new location Uptown also included The Cup & Saucer, which relocated to allow for expansion of the Confectionary. (this is becoming a neverending story). Originally in the location taken by Uptown were Wonderland of Wax Candle Shop 10/71 - 1981, Art Festival 10/71 - 1977?, Holiday Corner 1981 - 5/86.
Whew!!

This is from October 1981 and is of the Greenhouse and Watches.

There are lots of photos on the internet that show what the streets looked like. I know because I spend to much time looking at them.

Good find! looking at this photo, and others from the Oct 1981 page, the Clock Shop was on the corner of West St, not in the middle of the block. My bad.

BTW, was West St originally called Center St?

Well an ally simular to that at DL has been turned into a restraunt. If MK needs another Table-Service, then this might happen. With some indoor seating of coarse. But DL has much better weather for sitting outside and eating.

I remember that store, but it's now gone. I believe that this the main site has some pics of the rehab in the MK news and rumore archive. http://www.wdwmagic.com/magic3.htm scroll down about 3/4 of the way.

If the MK needs another eatery they should re-open the Adventurland Veranda.

Well, I didn't say what they SHOULD do, I just said what they CAN do. We all know that there is a difference there.

If they CAN do it, I would enjoy another one of these fun shopping areas.

When I was little I loved that street. I would always get my hair cut and go to the magic shop. I got a bunch of magic tricks each trip when I was a child and at night at our hotel I would do a magic show.

Infact, I remember buying a bunch of horiscope cards from the fortune teller when I was 5. I always picked Scorpio because I liked the scorpion. It was later, when i showed my parents what I had bought, that I learned you have a designated sign.... I would have been more embarassed had I not liked the scorpion cards so much!

Another great loss to the Magic Kingdom, The House of Magic sold magic tricks, monster masks, as well as tons of books and inexpensive gags. Sadly, The Main Street Athletic Shop replaced the Main Street Bookstore, the Penny Arcade, and the House of Magic when it closed on March 19, 1995 .

It is from another site but cannot get a good link.
