What makes Space Mountain so great? What can WDI learn from it?

Do you guys like the 2005 version better than the original? I kinda felt like the rebuild wasn't anywhere near as fun as the original?

As scary as WDW's is sometimes, I do like that we still have the chaotic wild mouse style original build. And two tracks!
The rebuild is better, mainly because it's so much darker (literally) now. On the original, you could clearly see the tracks throughout the ride. It's a near-perfect experience now.

The fact I saw this and thought of My Little Pony is embarrassing. I swear I've never seen the show. I don't even know how I knew this was the name of a pony.
Well there was that period of time where it was everywhere. Wonder what happened to the fans when it died down? Did they all just leave? Can't blame them if they did.

I kinda prefer the WDW Space Mountain. Despite awful modern alterations, the waiting line is better because it has mega charming distorted 3D space windows that look like the ending of The Wrath of Khan and an amazing music loop. The ride is more intense and there are two tracks.

There are bits and pieces I prefer of both. If I could take WDW's queue and thrill factor and mesh it with on-ride music and smoothness of DL's, that'd be the best. Also, hands down, I prefer the smell of Florida's. It has the old musty mildewy Florida Tomorrowland smell which is right up there with pirate water.

Space Mountain is actually one of my least favorite E Tickets. I do miss the **** Dale soundtrack.

I grew up on the Dick Dale version but it was changed in 05, so I was 14 or 15.

I like the new version more tbh only because I enjoy the tone / energy / originality more then the dramatic surfer song that was "Aquarium". Made zero sense to me.

Unfortunately, during the Dick Dale years, it was a 50/50 (if I'm being generous) chance that the on-board audio would actually work! I'm not sure if you have issue with the fact it was a Dick Dale surf guitar song or if it was "Aquarium" -- if it was the latter, it's not like most people actually knew what that song was called or the piece of music it originated from.

As for Dick Dale, don't forget, the music was added just a few years after Pulp Fiction hit theaters and Dick Dale and his sound was actually semi-popular. Between surf music, ska, and swing, the mid/late 90s sure were a weird time!!!

So the Dick Dale soundtrack on SM was like California Screamin'? I didn't know that.. It took them years to figure that one out and just in time for Incredicoaster. I don't have an issue with the Dick Dale soundtrack, I just don't think it was fitting. I do think Dick Dale went a little heavy on the surfer music. I'm not sure who came up with the decision to use a remix of Aquarium for a space ride lol.

So was the Dick Dale soundtrack more of a popularity thing in the 90s? It wasn't long before Dick Dale was switched out for Michael Giacchino so i'm assuming once they figured out the problems, Disney management agreed in that it should be changed.

Well Di<k Dale strictly plays surf guitar, so no fault of his going heavy on the surfer music haha. Yeah, after his old song 'Miserlou' was used as the intro song for Pulp Fiction, he saw a bit of a career resurgence in the mid 90s and Disney jumped on that for the Space Mountain update during the FedEx years. The queue videos also featured his music (or at least similar sounding surf rock) -- so that was the vibe they were going for at the time throughout the attraction.

Awesome! I didn't know haha thanks. I sort of remember the FedEx sponsorship and robot! I always thought the queue music stayed the same; that ambient radio chatter with weird background noise. Putting it all into perspective i'm sort of glad they ditched the sponsorship and changed up the soundtrack.

Never cared for the Richard Dale soundtrack and I don't understand why so many people prefer it.
I enjoyed Dale's soundtrack. It gave SM a new atmosphere, fit the layout well, and--musically--was a fantastic adaptation of Camille Saint-Saëns' s "Aquarium." It was also the first musical coaster ride for just about everyone at the time.
BUT I really love and prefer Giacchino's score. The first time I experienced it on-ride, I thought it really gave Space Mountain a welcome sense of whimsical fun, energy and adventure. Musically, it has a John Williams "Lost in Space" theme vibe, which is a very good thing (The classic LiS theme is the only great thing about the new Netflix show).
