What makes Space Mountain so great? What can WDI learn from it?

I personally think SM is a tad overrated (on both coasts) but the atmosphere and flying through the cool dark void with nothing to see is unforgettable.
I agree. SM is overrated. It's a fun ride and makes you feel like you are someplace else. However, they could easily give us a better experience by putting more projections in regular SM. They could add some physical props to the ride. A preshow queue could be added to the upstairs Starcade to make it feel like we really are on space station. The architecture is right out of the movie Futureworld from the 70's. Right now things are kind of plain.

One of the wonderful attributes of the concept of Space Mountain is how each of them in their respective parks have a tonal difference, but it's subtle.

The original in Orlando, Starport Seven Five, is an open to the public spaceport that has its guests, in this case 'tourists', travel leisurely in space. A precursor to Star Tours so to speak. While in Anaheim, Space Station 77, one is blasted off as an explorer to see the universe. This is reinforced in the queues. Space Station 77 is more futuristic and militaristic. There is a ship in the loading bay after-all. While in Starport Seven Five is a more sleek, family friendly, TRON-esque if you will, queue because it's aimed at the 'tourists'.

Of course this is just an interpretation. Although a narrative is not being delivered blatantly in ones face, these are Disney theme parks.
Odds are, there is a story somewhere. All one has to do is look for it.

I just wish imagineers would stop plusing POTC and focus on something different. There is alot of things at Disneyland that could benefit from being plused. SM is a prime example.

I'm sure there are ways to plus SM, but knowing WDI they'd probably throw in a storyline about how you're leaving Disneyland to go to space and it'd be full of random references to other Disney properties and attractions. The only storyline Space Mountain has ever needed was having guests be Fed Ex delivery men.

I don't think SM is overrated, but everything else I agree with you! They wont do it, but that outdoor queue is a joke. Using the top of Starcade for a indiana jones adventure like immersion could be magnificent. I'd be alright with some either large scale projections or beautiful shooting stars. I'd keep the ride profile, 3 lifts, and music the same though. The tunnel theme is awesome as well, with the chatter and weird space sounds. Also like I stated in a different thread, what happened to the cool lighting on the dome!?

I love a whole lot about space mountain in DL, here's a list
. The music: both the surfer music and the modern music are great
. the experience: the tunnel, the stars, the speed, all great!
. the fed ex backstory: Am I the only one who misses this backstory and the old tv screens they used to have? I think the backstory was that space mountain was the futuristic version of a postal service, or a simple way to travel. Clever! Now it's vague on if it is commercial travel or not.
. Speaking of the queue, I love the queue. I used to have dreams about that queue.
. And finally last, but not least, the best air conditioning in disneyland besides soarin'.

“what can / has WDI learned from it?”

Living under a rock or you think they do?

Each new version improves on the previous version. Then there’s Rock n Roller coaster and Everest. Now there Tron at Shanghai and the new Guardians coaster at Epcot.

Seems like they learned a lot.

I think it is is because it’s the only ride in both parks that are actually thrilling for anyone over the age of 8.

Do you guys like the 2005 version better than the original? I kinda felt like the rebuild wasn't anywhere near as fun as the original?

I've filibustered on this topic before. Briefly, while it's fun now, it used to feel like a journey to a fantasized version of space rather than an infinite void.

I kinda prefer the WDW Space Mountain. Despite awful modern alterations, the waiting line is better because it has mega charming distorted 3D space windows that look like the ending of The Wrath of Khan and an amazing music loop. The ride is more intense and there are two tracks.
