What keeps you motivated?

Here is a quote from a Pearl Izumi ad, that appeared in Runner's World magazine. I keep it on my refrigerator. "If you ran without sacrifice, congratulations. You just jogged. Running hurts. It always has. Wolly mammoths didn't just roll over onto a plate and serve themselves up to prehistoric man with fries and a shake. They had to be caught - and running down wolly mammoths was a b***h. But one with a purpose. It teaches us that good things do not come easy. It teaches us that we are capable of more than we think. It teaches us that hard work will be rewarded and laziness will be punished. Don't expect to learn those life lessons from running's shiftless stepchild, jogging. Next time you suffer on the roads or trails, suffer proudly. It means you run like a animal." For me, this helps explain the runs that turn out to be horribly difficult. Today you tried your best and the effort should not be frowned upon.

I'm sure many would call what I do jogging, but to me, I run. What motivates me? Knowing that every step is another step towards good health and longevity and away from poor health and obesity.

I couldn't care less how people clasify my runs, or how many stares I might get from the big buff marathon runners because I m slow.

I compete only with myself and am motivated to go just a bit faster and shave a bit off my time every time I run. I am motivated by seeing a finish time with even ten seconds less than the time before! I LOVE THAT FEELING.

I am motivated by how great I feel afterwards, and by the fact that this is something my husband and I can do together.

I am motivated by my desire to finish a marathon one day. Oh and I am motivated by the site od the Donald Duck medal I hope to get in January!

Haha! That's why I'm doing the half! I'll add it to the obsessive Donald Duck collection that I keep. I can run marathons, but I'm doing the WDW Half every year to keep getting new Donald medals. :D

I think everyone is a runner, no matter the speed. If you've worked hard, you are a runner.

i agree. when i did a 5k last weekend with a pace of 13.3, that was so amazing to me and just as big a victory as the guy who finished with a 6.5 pace!

i think it is all relative depending on where you are in your running journey!

What keeps me motivated? Why do I run? There are so many reasons. In no particular order:

1 - It keeps me healthy and fit.
2 - It enables me to eat as much junk food as I do! LOL
3 - It's "me time" away from the kids, my job, everything.
4 - My thoughts flow in a way that they just don't during structured time. I find resolutions to problems, come up with ideas, etc.
5 - It's a huge stress reliever. I can take off on a run feeling stressed or angry or frustrated about something, and when I return, it has all washed away.
6 - It gives me more patience to take care of my kids.
7 - When I listen to my iPod while running, nobody tells me to "turn off that country music crap!" LOL
8 - It sets a good example for my kids to keep healthy and make exercise a part of their life.
9 - Running is a sport that I can do anywhere and a way to see the world differently. I've had some amazing runs in other states and countries.
10 - Running is something that does not come naturally or easy to me, so when I complete a particularly hard workout or set a PR, I feel a sense of enormous pride for knowing that I stuck with it and succeeded.
11 - Endorphin high! No matter how badly I may prefer to stay in bed at 5:30am than get up and run in some crappy weather, I have learned that I will feel so good when I return (maybe not during the run but definitely after it) that it will be worth it. And it ALWAYS is.

A friend of mine keeps asking me, "What are you running FROM?"

I tell him, "Fat, Disease, Laziness, Diabetes, Heart Attack, Young Death ..... etc, etc"

He thinks he's being funny, but after I say one of the above reasons he's not laughing. (Did I mention he's very out of shape?)

I don't know about that first quote.

I think what I do is technically jogging, but I run with pain - all the time. My right knee is messed up. In essence it does not line up correctly. My orthopedist said I have two options. One he can "take my knee apart and rebuilt it" which still might not fix it. Or two, I can live with it. Well, I live with it. It hurts going up stairs, it hurts if I do squats, it lights up like fire if I kneel on it, and when I run (or jog) it becomes a dull constant ache 3 steps into the run. I think that is part of the reason I don't run faster than I do.

Anyway, what keeps me running (jogging) is that it is all about me. There is nobody else to blame, or to take the credit. I run alone, I train alone, and if I succeed or fail, it's because of me. I don't compete with anyone else but myself.

I do plenty of other physical activities to keep me healthy. Activities that I find more enjoyable than running (I hate running, but I love it when the run is over) When I am hiking, or playing softball, or sparring in Tae Kwon Do, I enjoy it. I would do those things for hours on end if I could. When I run, I can't wait for the run to be over. That's what motivates me, because it is something I don't like to do, but it is something that only I have control over, so I do it anyway. (and the medals, shirts, etc are nice too :) )
