What is the deal with the Power Rangers?

Alright, I know when I was a kid the Power Rangers were kind of a big thing.
Now, they're back...but it's even more idiotic. And NOW, Disney has them in the Stars and Motor Cars parade over at Studios. What is the DEAL???!!!

When I go to WDW I want to see Mickey and Minnie jumping around, not some guys in tacky spandex outfits that have "powers" that are completely lame.
Why must Disney trash itself with stupid things like the Power Rangers!

Anyone else annoyed by this? Your thoughts...

I just think that if Disney had owned the Power Rangers when I was a kid, it'd have been like heaven to me. Haha. Their constant presence on Toon Disney bothers me a lot more (they're not cartoons, and not created by Disney...um...huh?)...they're a little distracting to me in the parade, but easy enough to ignore. I'd feel more OK with it if when they said the float featured stars of many past generations of Rangers, that included anyone from the good ol' Mighty Morphin' days. It'd still seem random and somewhat out of place, but at least I'd feel sentiment about it. :)

The meet and greet doesn't bother me; it's easy to ignore, like when the Ninja Turtles were doing meet and greets. Random...but low-key enough that it didn't really matter. The parade float makes me raise an eyebrow, but no big deal, I guess. Disney is in a partnership with Lucasfilm and gets to use the Star Wars characters and bought the Muppets years after they'd been established, so if the Rangers are a successful enough franchise that the general public likes seeing them around, fine. Different strokes for different folks.

well, I understand kids may love them...but there are PLENTY of GREAT characters, much better than the Power Rangers, for kids to gawk over at WDW.

It just really annoys me cause they aren't Disney characters.

Oh, and I understand Star Wars and the Muppets being in Disney. That's fine, even though they aren't technically Disney.

But the Power Rangers are not even close to them. They are definitely not up to par with Star Wars and the Muppets!

My son has loved the Power Rangers since he was old enough to watch TV. Disney has far too few characters for boys, especially boys older than about six or seven.

My husband has been known to admire the Pink Ranger as well. ;)

I think it's great that they're at Disney - meeting the Red Ranger was a high point in my son's life. It was truly a Magical moment for us.

Hey everyone,
Please don't think I claim to be any kind of expert on such things, but let me offer an observation and opinion.
I am a pediatrician here in Florida. As such, I have become an unwilling expert on all things Thomas the Tank Engine, Power Puff Girls, Wiggles, Blue's Clues, Bob the Builder, American Girl and multiple other commercial ventures that our kids are bombarded with on a daily basis (including Disney ventures). I have never heard complaints about any of these characters from parents. However, I routinely get complaints from parents about the Power Rangers. They may seem benign to you and me, but I am constantly getting reports about kids becoming much more physically violent after routinely watching the Power Rangers. Kids are unable to separate the pretend kicks and punches of the Power Rangers, aimed at riduculous monsters in pathetic plastic suits, from their very real kicks and punches aimed at their friends and siblings.
I always discourage kids from watching the Power Rangers. Having said that, I would hope that my beloved Disney would distant themselves from such violence. Sadly, I am not as disturbed by the Power Rangers in the Disney theme parks as I am by the toy guns that are sold thoughout. What's next, candy cigarettes?!!!!

Ah, but the toy guns and rifles are (were?) a tradition! It goes back to the old original 1955 synergy scheme: Davy Crockett on TV and Frontierland at Disneyland! Merchandise opportunities!

Not that I've ever purchased one.

Or condone purchasing one. Or owning one.

Or enjoyed the Power Rangers.

Or smoke candy cigarettes.... :lookaroun

I actually have heard of stories where two children have kicked and punched other children their age or younger (and much smaller) to death (based on moves they saw on the Power Rangers)!!!

I think you can't shelter children from violence b/c it's a part of this world and you really can't do anything about it. They need to understand it. There is an age where they won't understand the difference between the Power Rangers kicking on TV and then they themselves reinacting those moves in real life on other children.

I also find that many younger boys (toddler age- preschool) enjoy the Princesses almost as much as girls do! When boys get older, they tend to find characters "lame" and "uncool", while girls usually still embrace them. It also just depends on the child. I don't think it's a gender thing.

Oh please............
Gimmie a break!
What next? You going to say that the Great Movie Ride is bad because of the gun fight? Or possibly the Indiana Jones stunt show?
What about It's tough to be a bug? They try to kill the audience with bug spray.
I guess Pirates of the Caribbean is not good. They shoot cannon balls at you, and teach kids how to riot and loot a town. Not to mention sell women.

Please don't go off on some hyperbole based on my simple observation. Kids who watch Power Rangers kicking and punching are much more likely to try out these kicks and punches on their peers. It's simple behavioral and developmental pediatric psychology. Kids imitate what they observe whether it's what they see their parents doing or what they watch on TV. Too many parents plant their kids in front of the TV and don't give them the tools to separate pretend from reality. Many parents who think its OK to let their kids play with toy guns are the same ones who have unsecured guns in the household. Why should Disney enable such careless parents. Too many of our kids are becoming violent and killing/dying - and it's NOT because they watch giant cans of bug spray or canons firing.
Give ME a freakin' break.

I would just like to step in here. Power Rangers are a product of Saban entertainment. Disney owns Saban entertainment, or at least a majority of the company. Thus Power Rangers are Disney property, and a very high money maker at that. MGM is the place for all the unusual and new non traditinal disney characters to go. if you want to go see mickey and the gang go to a park that it's designed for it. true they are also at MGM but MGM is the location for all new stuff such as Kim possible and Cars.

Yeah, blame the parents. To me, your whole comment: "I would hope that my beloved Disney would distant themselves from such violence." is debatable. There are other "violent" things that you can see in the park. I have listed some of them.
You can't blame Disney for selling toy guns because of careless irresponsible parents. All Disney is doing is offering CHOICES.
Kids are becoming violent because some parents allow them to become that way. But pointing fingers at WDW is not the solution.
Write congress or something.

those power rangers...always causing some kind of hoopla.

maybe some might think this is innappropriate, i found it funny. so back to the "mighty morphin" days- both pink and red ranger are in ...how shall i say .... a certain kind of grown up film industry now. and hmm...the red rangers choice in roles and films doesn't make him seem like the macho guy he was on the show, unless he did a really good job hiding certain tendemcies.

i'm sorry. just had to put it out there.

How are the Power Rangers at the Studios harming you? If the little boys at the park enjoy seeing them then what's the problem?

But you can't blame WDW or harmless toys for bad parenting. My parents let me play with toy guns, but they always taught me never to point them at people, and I was never a violent kid. If you're so disturbed by the toy guns Disney is selling then I wouldn't suggest Tom Sawyer's Island, Frontierland Shootin' Arcade, or Buzzlightyear's Space Ranger Spin either.
