What if Disney banned all cameras and phones in the park?

In the mid to late 90's, all we had were phones that could send text messages, cameras that used film, and we took a large video camera on our first trip in 1997; it used a VHS tape.

People still bumped into each other.
or before texting even, people carried around walkie-talkies and all you'd hear was a lot of very loud static. Those were the days!

Remember a short time with the Nextel 2-Way Phone/Radios in the late 90s? When you keyed up, you'd hear the BEEP BEEP before you could talk?

And I saw your tagline about Marco Island in 8 days. I live about 45 minutes north of Marco Island. Enjoy your trip! :) Welcome to SW Florida! :)

Thanks! Any suggestions for can't misses on Marco?

I would be fine with a ban on texting and walking! The amount of people with their face in their phone and not paying a lick of attention to where they are going or what is going on around them is amazing! Don't get me started on texting while pushing strollers or driving motorized carts....

Phone calls, photo's, texts or MDE surfing from a bench or side of a walkway are fine. I wouldn't ban cameras and phones completely.

Don't forget those that walk around with a paper map unfolded in front of them, so that they can't see. Sometimes they walk, sometimes they just stop dead with no notice.
Or they stop dead with the map and point in the direction they need to go hitting you in the face as you try to avoid walking into them.

So when everyone shows up with a cell phone who didn't get the memo, what do you do? Turn them away? Tell them to throw out their cell phones? Go back to the hotel? Give every park guest a locker to store the cellphone outside the park?

No.... I'd miss out on getting my memories recorded and having the fun of reliving my trip when I got home. My photos are of things I want or certain shots Photopass CM's would never get. My shots are irreplaceable and I'd never give up my camera. The problem exists because of others not being courteous, not being aware of what they are doing, and oblivious of anyone else being around them. Dont ban the cameras, teach people how to be aware of others and use good judgement when using them.

 Is this possible???

The thing I noticed during our recent annual visit was the number of people in lines on their phones. Not talking on their phones but either playing games or reading stuff on social media etc. Now I'd never presume to tell them what to do and it doesn't ruin my trip, however I think many of them miss stuff there to enjoy. Many of the lines at Disney tell a story, or build the atmosphere and I can't help thinking that these people are sadly missing out on all of this. Also strolling around and enjoying the beauty of the parks I can't help notice these days the number of people reading their phones as they walk around. Again it's their choice and their loss, but it's such a shame and they're missing out on so much.

Hey Merg, you know what else they are missing out on? Time spent with family. We have been married 33 years and still enjoy together time in line. The ones that really blow my mind are folks at dinner. In Savannah a few weeks ago we were at a seafood place and just down from our table was a group of six. And every single one was nibbling while hovered over a cellphone. Sad.
Hope you made it home safely.

Hey my friend, yes we got back yesterday morning after flying overnight. Totally agree with you, at the Sci-fi we noticed people on their phones and ignoring the clips on the screens that are part of the experience.

And remember next year, we'll try and meet up for dinner in Epcot some time  (where we can all sit on our phones all evening ignoring each other :))

If your Disney you direct them to the lockers that will cost them $10/day or allow them to return to their car to put it away... In most cases you would make $10 bucks off the person.

My experience improves both when I don't take pics, and when others don't.

Can't ban the second, but you perfectly well can stop the first.

(How often are you really going to look at those 479 pictures?)

In my case I made hardbound books out of each trip, and I look back on them pretty regularly, a few times a year at least, possibly more, especially when planning another trip. If I couldn't bring my camera to Disney World I'd be heartbroken.

Ok, just for the sake of fun for this thread, I'll let @gsimpson keep his phone, Disney gives out phones to use for MDE purposes, which have pager functions for emergencies.

Disney gives out phones??? Or was this a hypothetical situation you're proposing?

But the lockers are optional. Are they going to personally escort every guest with a cellphone to the lockers and watch them as they store it away? Are they going to frisk them after they store it again to make sure it's not on their person? Will there be more people getting banned from the parks because they just wanted to sneak in a photo of their kid riding Dumbo? Will there be a fine?

How about letting those of us who enjoy taking pictures, take pictures as long as they aren't causing a disruption and people stop with the banning of common everyday items in modern society fantasies. It isn't going to happen.

Sounds good to me. Sure I have thousands of WDW photos on my computer but the time spent taking them and time spent looking at them after the trips is nowhere near equal. I probably have hundreds I've never even looked at.

I think it's more an issue with the cell phone dependency thing going on. People are WAY too snap-happy with pictures and they just end up taking up space on hard drives.
